Abstract

This article aims to analyze through online mass media critically and case studies the dual nature of the passage of the Electronic Information and Transaction Law (ITE Law) as an instrument of digital rights protection and a potential threat to freedom of expression and democratic values in Indonesia. This research uses a descriptive-qualitative method to analyze data from 2020 to 2022 with NVivo 12 Plus, referencing Mazmanian and Sabatier's (1983) theory of policy implementation effectiveness. It focuses on the willingness of target groups to comply with policy outputs and the actual impact of those outputs.. Third, fundamental improvements to the law. Research shows that community compliance with the ITE Law has increased, evidenced by a decrease in cases from 2020–2022. The indicator of the Real Impact of Policy Outputs shows that the public and activists oppose implementing the ITE Law because freedom of expression is restricted. Then the indicator of fundamental improvement of the law is that the government will revise the articles of the ITE Law, especially articles 27, 28, and 29, which are considered multi-interpretive.

Abstract

Africa is yet entangled with some Western modernity responsible for their political crises and incessant insecurity. Insecurity in Africa has historical roots from pre-colonial to post-colonial periods. The continent's hosting of the seventh United Nations Peace Support mission and over 60 percent of the UN Security Council's agenda addresses African insecurity underscore the urgent need to tackle these challenges. This paper examines insecurity in Africa and advocates for reviving African traditional methods to restore peace, utilizing proverbs and wisdom. Through analysis, criticism, and prescription, it explores the inherent insecurity problems and argues that African proverbs offer valuable insights for fostering unity. The study compares Western crisis resolution methods with African approaches, concluding that traditional African means are a more effective alternative. It highlights Africa as a potential solution to its own insecurity while recognizing the benefits of Western methods. The paper concluded that Africa has strong indigenous values and security systems capable of addressing insecurity even before colonialism. The paper recommended that African traditional security outfits are more efficient and better considered as alternative measures to solving the problems of peace and insecurity in Africa rather than adopting the Western war-war method.

Abstract

Beauty has become a precious commodity that the cosmetics business has captured by presenting the best image possible, particularly through advertising. The huge increase in the number of hijab wearers (hijabers) in Indonesia over the last few decades is one phenomenon to which the business has responded. This raises the topic of how religion is depicted in commercials for hijab shampoo products. These commercials are deconstructed to locate meaning, which leads to commodification practices using a semiotic approach, particularly Roland Barthes' examination of myth. The examination is then carried out from a sociological standpoint, using Karl Marx's idea of commodification. This qualitative research method uses content analysis on ten different hijab shampoo advertising from three different international manufacturers. The findings suggest that the advertisements are more than merely conveying the word that the product is useful for hair maintenance. There are also messages to wear the hijab regularly, that the hijab does not limit women's activities, and that hair health has ramifications for psychological disorders. The image depicted is a type of commodification in which the hijab is paired with cosmopolitanism, and the sacred significance of the headscarf itself is diminished.

The development of the globalization era has caused many changes, one of which is the increasingly sophisticated technology. Social media is a phenomenon as a result of technological advancement. This study aims to find out the relationship between social media access and student achievement motivation. This study uses a quantitative method in the form of a survey. Data was obtained through questionnaires and interviews. The data analysis technique uses Kendall’s correlation. The results of the study show a positive relationship between social media access and student achievement motivation. The p value or significance of 0.002 indicates that there is a substance relationship between the two variables because the p-value is 0.002 <α 0.05 at a significance level of 99% (0.01). Social media is a factor that influences motivation for student achievement. This can happen because of imitation behavior towards positive content on the accounts they follow regarding achievements. Social media helps students to get learning materials and makes it easier to get information about competitions.

Abstract

In the era of digitalization, digital literacy plays a vital role in shaping active participation and the quality of democracy. There are still challenges in the level of digital literacy in Indonesia, which impacts blind trust in emerging issues. As a result, people are vulnerable to the spread of fake news, online fraud, harmful content, and privacy violations. This research uses a desk research method with a qualitative approach, collecting secondary data from journal articles, books, and related reports. Analyses were conducted using content analysis techniques to identify patterns and relationships between digital literacy and democracy. The results show that although Indonesia's digital literacy index has improved, digital crime and hoaxes are rising, indicating a gap between technological skills and digital ethics. The findings emphasize the need for a more comprehensive approach to digital literacy programs, including integrating digital literacy education into the formal curriculum and improved technological infrastructure, particularly in underdeveloped areas. The implications of this study suggest that improving digital literacy is essential for safe access to information and an important step toward strengthening more critical and responsible democratic participation in Indonesia.
