Abstract

Indirectly, mathematical themes can be found throughout Indonesia's unique culture, one of which is mathematics in batik cultural items. Exploring ethnomathematics will be really beneficial. Apart from acquiring the concept of mathematics in Indonesian culture, it can also sharpen Indonesian culture's sense of love for the nation. The purpose of this study is to describe the philosophical meaning of the geometrical concepts contained in Pamekasan batik, the geometrical concepts contained in Pamekasan batik, and the implementation of Batik pamekasan as the context in learning geometry. This is ethnomathematics study which gather the data by observation and interview. The interview held two regions in Pamekasan with four informants. As a result, scholars aim to conduct an ethnomathematics examination of traditional Pamekasan batik. This research shows that aside from the Batik itself, the mathematical objects found in Batik each have their own meaning and hopes. As a result, mathematical motifs such as the point that depicts a rice or maize seed have philosophical significance. Meanwhile, reflection reveals that human life requires balance. Each mathematical object in the pattern has its own meaning. Meanwhile, geometrical objects in Batik Pamekasan are two-dimensional figures such as circles, rectangles, squares, lines, points, angles, and curves. In addition, transformative geometry like as rotation, reflection, and translation exist in Batik Pamekasan. Besides, batik pamekasan can be used as the context in learning geometry. This can be seen from the learning outcomes that was written in Merdeka curriculum. Moreover, problem-based learning and project-based learning are two models that support ethnomathematics-based learning.

Abstract

The differences in algebraic thinking when solving problems are determined by the characteristics of students. One of the distinguishing characteristics is cognitive style. The study aimed to describe the algebraic thinking profile of students who had reflective cognitive styles in solving mathematics problems. This study used descriptive qualitative research with a case study research design, focusing on 8th grade junior high school students with reflective cognitive style. Data were collected using tests and interviews. This study used three types of tests namely Matching Familiar Figure Test (MFFT) to determine students’ cognitive style, Mathematics Ability Test (AMT) to measure students' mathematical abilities, and Problem-Solving Test (PST) to obtain data related to students’ algebraic thinking profile in solving mathematics problems. Data were analyzed in three stages covering data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the algebraic thinking of students with reflective cognitive style in solving problems met the three aspects of algebraic thinking indicators namely performing activities to generalize the pattern and determine the next term of the given pattern, representing and comparing data in tabular form, and understanding the meaning of variables and use variables in the form of letters or symbols as a representation of something unknown value in algebraic form. Students with a reflective cognitive style in solving problems could understand the problems given well, be careful and thorough in writing the steps of completion, and straightforward and coherent in answering questions so that the answers given tend to be correct. Thus, the results of this study are expected to be one of the references for teachers or other researchers in developing mathematics learning by considering the cognitive style the students, especially reflective cognitive style.

Abstract

Students, especially madrasah students, need to master Islamic integrated mathematics problem-solving. However, many madrasah students need help to solve Islamic-integrated mathematics problems. The failure occurs in one part and several interrelated parts of the solution. Therefore, this study aims to explore the failure of madrasah science competition students at the national level in solving Islamic integrated mathematics problems on triangle material. The research was conducted qualitatively on 29 students at the Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) or equivalent level who participated in the national madrasah science competition, and they failed to solve Islamic integrated mathematics problems on triangle material. The research instrument was a triangle problem given during the National Madrasah Science Competition (KSM) in 2023. The results showed five categories of failure: failure to provide a correct and complete process, failure to integrate Islamic values, failure to use mathematical concepts, failure to use mathematical principles, and failure to apply relevant strategies. This research contributes to teachers by characterizing student failures that can be used as a guideline in designing learning strategies that can overcome student failures. In addition, teachers can provide scaffolding to students according to the type of failure.
