Abstract

This study identifies the types and purposes of speech acts contained in President Prabowo Subianto's speech at the High-Level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution (New York, 2025). This study uses Searle's (1979) classification of speech acts: representatives, directives, commissives, expressives, and declaratives. This research was conducted qualitatively and focused on how language functions as a tool for political action and persuasion. Using a descriptive pragmatic approach, the analysis shows that all five types of speech acts appeared in the speech. Representative speech acts affirm Indonesia's humanitarian position, directive speech acts call for international cooperation, commissive speech acts express commitment to the future, expressive speech acts demonstrate empathy and respect, and declarative speech acts demonstrate diplomatic intent. The study concludes that President Prabowo's speech reflects Indonesia's moral, diplomatic, and humanitarian leadership through the strategic and persuasive use of language in the context of international diplomacy.

Abstract

This study investigates the correlation between students’ reading anxiety and their reading comprehension performance in higher education. Reading comprehension is a critical academic skill, yet many students struggle due to emotional factors such as anxiety, which can impair focus, memory, and cognitive processing. A total of 50 undergraduate students participated in this correlational study. Reading anxiety was measured using the Foreign Language Reading Anxiety Scale (FLRAS), while reading comprehension was assessed through a standardized test consisting of multiple-choice and short-answer questions. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and simple linear regression. The results indicated a strong negative correlation (r = -0.62, p < 0.01) between reading anxiety and comprehension scores, suggesting that higher anxiety levels significantly reduce students’ reading performance. Regression analysis revealed that reading anxiety accounted for 38% of the variance in reading comprehension scores. The findings highlight the need for targeted interventions, such as relaxation techniques, cognitive-behavioral strategies, and structured reading activities, to reduce anxiety and enhance comprehension skills. This study provides valuable insights for educators and researchers in designing strategies to support students’ emotional well-being and academic success.

Abstract

This reserach aims to analyze the strategies used by English teachers in implementing storytelling techniques in English learning at State Islamic Senior High School (MAN) 2 Model Medan. The background of this study is based on the low communicative ability of students caused by teaching methods that are still conventional and teacher-centered. Storytelling techniques are seen as an innovative approach that can improve students' language skills through communicative, expressive, and meaningful contexts. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with four English teachers at MAN 2 Model Medan who have implemented storytelling in teaching and learning activities as research subjects. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2018) through three main stages: data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study show that teachers apply three main strategies in implementing storytelling: (1) planning strategy, which includes selecting stories according to the theme, learning objectives, and student ability levels; (2) implementation strategy, with the use of expressions, intonation, and supporting media such as images, videos, and gestures to attract students' attention; and (3) evaluation strategies, in the form of retelling activities, discussions, and communication-based performance assessments. Supporting factors for the implementation of storytelling include student enthusiasm and school support, while inhibiting factors include limited time, large student numbers, and variations in language abilities.
