Abstract

Active smokers and passive smokers are widely found throughout the world, this is due to the negative influence from the surrounding environment which causes an increase in the number of cigarette consumers as well as someone who is exposed to cigarette smoke every day. The purpose of this study was to determine the hemoglobin levels of active smokers and passive smokers in musicians in the Batu City music community. This research method uses descriptive analytical research with a cross-sectional approach. The research sample consisted of 33 venous blood of active smokers and passive smokers in musicians in the Batu City music community. The examination was carried out using the cyanmethomoglobin method. The results found that the average normal male hemoglobin level was 15.8 g / dL with a frequency of 9, and high 19.1 g / dL as many as 16 frequencies, while for normal women 13.4 g / dL with a frequency of 3, for high 15.7 g / dL with a frequency of 5. The results of the Pearson correlation data analysis showed that there was a relationship between hemoglobin levels and active smokers and passive smokers with a value of P <0.01. Active smokers and passive smokers have differences in hemoglobin levels, high hemoglobin levels are dominated by active smokers, namely 75% and normal hemoglobin levels are dominated by passive smokers, namely 54%. This means that it can be concluded that there are differences in hemoglobin levels in active smokers and passive smokers of musicians in the Batu City music community. So the right advice for respondents is to reduce smoking gradually and then choose other positive activities rather than having to consume cigarettes every day.

Abstract

Multi Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is a type of tuberculosis that is resistant to two first-line antituberculosis drugs (OAT), namely Isoniazid and Rifampicin. MDR-TB treatment involves a combination of first-line and second-line OAT, which is carried out over a long period of time. The prolonged use of these drugs can cause side effects that affect various organs of the body, especially the kidneys. One indication of impaired kidney function is an increase in blood levels of ureum, uric acid, creatinine and albumin. In addition, side effects of drugs such as Kanamycin, which is nephrotoxic, can cause accumulation in the proximal tubules of the kidneys, reduce the glomerular filtration rate, and impact creatinine levels. Another side effect that can arise during MDR-TB treatment is a decrease in appetite, which leads to decreased nutritional intake, reflected in low albumin levels. This study aims to describe the levels of ureum, uric acid, creatinine, and albumin in patients with MDR-TB undergoing treatment at Ario Wirawan Lung Hospital (RSPAW) Salatiga. This study is descriptive qualitative with a cross-sectional approach. Secondary data were collected from the medical record installation from January to December 2023. This study involved 28 respondents, of which 92.86% had normal ureum levels, 71.43% had normal uric acid levels, 96.43% had normal creatinine levels, and 78.57% had normal albumin levels. A small proportion of respondents had elevated ureum or uric acid levels, with some variation in the combination of abnormal creatinine and albumin levels. The conclusion of this study is that although there were patients with abnormal ureum, uric acid, creatinine, or albumin levels, MDR-TB treatment generally did not significantly affect ureum, uric acid, creatinine, and albumin levels in the majority of patients. However, regular monitoring of renal function and nutritional status is still required to detect and manage adverse effects that may arise during long-term treatment.

Abstract

The deparaffinization technique is critical in hematoxylin-eosin staining tissue slides. Xylol is an organic solvent that is frequently used as a deparaffinization agent, however, it has several hazardous effects. Alternative deparaffinization agents that are safer for the environment and humans are required, one of which is traditional mandar coconut oil (MTM). Lauric acid in MTM is non-polar, hence it can dissolve paraffin. The study aimed to evaluate the quality of staining results in mouse liver slide during the deparaffinization process using xylol and MTM with Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. This study is an experimental design that uses 40 samples of mouse liver tissue slides, which were divided into two treatment groups. The Man-Whitney test was used to analyze data on the quality of tissue staining results based on nucleus, cytoplasm, and color homogeneity. The results of the staining quality of the mouse liver slide in the xylol and MTM groups obtained 100% good (score 3). The conclusion in this study is traditional mandar coconut oil (MTM) is effective for use as an alternative deparaffinization agent in HE staining.

Abstract

Prolonged use of narcotics can cause damage to the liver, which plays a role in the metabolism and detoxification of harmful substances in the body. Impaired liver function due to narcotics use can affect albumin and bilirubin levels which can be indicators of liver damage. This study aims to determine the relationship between albumin and bilirubin levels in narcotics rehabilitation patients <2 years at Dr. Radjiman Widiodiningrat Lawang Hospital. A total of 11 pure narcotics patients, without the use of psychotic drugs. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with random sampling technique. The results showed that 82% of patients had normal albumin levels, and all patients showed normal bilirubin levels. Correlation test analysis showed no significant relationship between the length of narcotics consumption and albumin levels (r = 0.004, p> 0.05), and no significant relationship between the length of rehabilitation and albumin levels (r = 0.413, p> 0.05). In addition, no significant correlation was found between the duration of drug use and bilirubin levels (r=-0.226, p>0.05), or between the duration of rehabilitation and bilirubin levels (r=0.214, p>0.05). The results of the homogeneity test and data normality test indicate that the data are distributed homogeneously and normally. In conclusion, there is no significant relationship between albumin and bilirubin levels with the duration of drug use and rehabilitation.

Abstract

Technological advances affect the automation of laboratory equipment, one of which is haemoglobin examination with a haematology analyzer that has several modes of examination to improve accuracy and precision. The haemoglobin test data at RSU Fastabiq Sehat PKU Muhammadiyah Pati reached 25,365 tests. Predilute mode on the Mindray BC-5380 haematology analyser is rarely used, only about 2%, very much different from the use of Whole Blood (WB) mode which reaches a percentage of 98%. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy and precision of the Hematology Analyzer Mindray BC-5380 in Predilute mode for measuring haemoglobin levels using capillary blood at RSU Fastabiq Sehat PKU Muhammadiyah Pati. The methodology used in this study was descriptive quantitative with a cross-sectional approach. Data was obtained through measurement of haemoglobin using the device, which was then analysed to assess accuracy and precision. The results showed a bias value of 2.58%, indicating good accuracy. The coefficient of variation (CV) value of 5.52% exceeded the limit set by the manufacturer, indicating poor precision. Further evaluation using the Levey-Jenning graph and Westgard's rule indicated a 12s deviation on the fifth day, indicating the possibility of systematic or random errors. The Mindray BC-5380 predilute mode haematology analyser had good accuracy of haemoglobin levels in capillary blood, but poor precision compared to the manufacturer's values.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a condition characterized by elevated blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia), where if blood sugar levels do not function normally, it will result in complications for the body. One of the indicators of diabetes mellitus is the HbA1c test. poor glycemic control triggers the onset of nephropathic complications, which can be diagnosed with urea and creatinine tests. This study aims to understand the relationship between HbA1c, urea, and creatinine levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes. This study uses a quantitative correlation analysis design with a cross-sectional design. A total of 48 respondents were selected using the random sampling method. The results of the measurement of the variables studied showed a high HbA1c level of (60.4%), a high urea level of (4.2%), and a high creatinine level of (39.6%). The Pearson correlation test shows that there is a positive  relationship between HbA1c levels and urea levels, with a p-value of 0.006, which is less than 0.05 (0.006 < 0.05). Meanwhile, the relationship between HbA1c and creatinine shows that there is no significant relationship between HbA1c levels and creatinine levels, with a p-value of 0.352.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of global mortality, with 10.6 million new cases reported worldwide in 2023 by the World Health Organization (WHO), including 450,000 cases of rifampicin-resistant TB (RR-TB). This study aimed to determine the correlation between Acid-Fast Bacilli (AFB) smear and Rapid Molecular Test (TCM) results among TB patients at Dr. Loekmono Hadi General Hospital, Kudus. This descriptive-analytic study employed a cross-sectional design and involved 45 randomly selected TB patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria in January 2025. Each patient underwent both AFB smear and TCM (GeneXpert) examinations. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis, with the Chi-Square test used to assess the correlation. The results showed that the majority of patients were aged 46–65 years (48.8%) and male (57.8%). TCM detected MTB Not Detected in 66.7% of patients, while 80% had negative AFB smear results. The Chi-Square test revealed a significant correlation between the two methods (p < 0.001). In conclusion, TCM is more sensitive than AFB smear in detecting TB. These findings imply that broader implementation of TCM in TB screening and diagnosis is essential to enhance early detection accuracy and improve disease control efforts.

Abstract

Pulmonary tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Patients diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis undergo Anti-Tuberculosis Drug (OAT) therapy for six months. In the first two months, known as the intensive phase, patients receive a combination of OATs such as isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol, and pyrazinamide. TNF-α is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that plays a crucial role in granuloma formation to contain the spread of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This study aims to determine the difference in TNF-α levels in pulmonary tuberculosis patients before and after one month of OAT therapy. The study used an observational analytic design with a prospective cohort approach without comparison. A total of 17 newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis patients at Bangetayu, Kedungmundu, and Tlogosari Wetan Health Centers, Semarang City, were included. TNF-α levels in serum samples were measured using the ELISA method. The mean TNF-α level before OAT therapy was 110.09±100,48 pg/mL, while after one month of therapy, it decreased to 90,05±60,12 pg/mL. The statistical analysis using the Mann-Whitney test yielded a p-value of 0.228 (p > 0.05), indicating that there was no statistically significant difference in TNF-α levels before and after one month of anti-tuberculosis drug (OAT) therapy. However, the mean TNF-α levels showed a decreasing trend, which, although not statistically significant, may suggest an initial immunological response to the treatment. The researcher recommends further studies with a larger sample size and longer observation period—such as until the end of the intensive phase or the completion of therapy—in order to obtain more representative and statistically significant results regarding TNF-α dynamics during tuberculosis treatment.

Abstract

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an acid-fast bacteria that causes pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease that is a priority health problem in developing countries including Indonesia. Fast and accurate examination is very important in diagnosing tuberculosis. Tuberculosis examination has several methods that are not commonly applied, namely the Immunochromatography test (ICT) examination. This study is a non-experimental study with a survey method without intervention that is descriptive analytical. The purpose of the study was to see the relationship between the examination of the Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate and the Rapid Tuberculosis IgG / IgM Test. The results obtained that the LED results of 8 samples were normal and 17 samples were abnormal, while the ICT test for IgG examination of all samples was negative, IgM 24 samples were negative and 1 sample was positive. The results of the Chi square statistical test obtained an α value of 0.618 so that it can be concluded that there is no relationship between the LED value and the results of the IgG and IgM tuberculosis tests.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is still one of the infectious diseases with the highest mortality rate in the world. WHO stated that Indonesia is the third country in the world with the most TB cases. Semarang is the third province in Indonesia with the highest TB cases. Although the mortality rate is high, in reality TB can be treated and prevented. Anti-TB drugs as TB treatment agents can cause side effects, one of which is a decrease in the number of platelets. The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in the number of platelets in TB patients before starting treatment and after one month of treatment with Anti-TB drugs. The study population was new tuberculosis patients. The study sample was taken according to the established criteria and obtained as many as 24 people, who were examined twice, namely before treatment and after 1 month of treatment. The results of this study stated that the average number of platelets before starting TB treatment was 340.875 cells/μL and after one month of treatment with Anti-TB drugs was 281.958 cells/μL. The Wilcoxon test showed a P value = 0.009. There was a significant difference in the number of platelets before starting TB treatment and after one month of treatment with Anti-TB drugs. TB treatment can affect blood conditions, including platelets. Thus, patients and their families are expected to better  understand the importance of carrying out routine checks and not stopping treatment without medical consultation.
