Abstract

Abstract

Penetapan Telaga Ngebel sebagai Kawasan wisata atas usulan masyarakat lokal mengindikasikan pengembangan Community Based Tourism (CBT).

Abstract

The segregation of Chinese ethnic settlements in various Indonesian cities has become a persistent phenomenon despite the abolition of colonial spatial separation policies since 1910. Research on the persistence of this segregation remains limited, particularly in revealing the socio-cultural dynamics that cause Chinese communities to remain in colonial heritage areas. This study examines the formation process of Chinese ethnic settlement segregation in Kampung Kapitan Palembang from the pre-colonial era to the present, as well as the factors that cause this community to maintain cross-generational settlements. The approach used in this research is a qualitative approach with a case study research type. The selection of informants using purposive technique, totaling 16 informants consists of Chinese ethnic residents and Chinese ethnic leaders. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and literature study. This research was analyzed using the Settlement Development Theory by Griffith Taylor and the concept of settlement development factors according to Sumaatmadja. The research results show that the Chinese settlement in Kampung Kapitan was formed since the fall of the Sriwijaya Kingdom (1478) when the Ming Dynasty of China established a trading office in Palembang, then developed through four stages to the contemporary era. The persistence of this segregation is caused by collective inherited house ownership that is difficult to sell due to potential intergenerational conflicts, proximity of location to markets where they trade, strong kinship relations, daily use of Mandarin language, preservation of Chinese cultural traditions, and the designation of Kampung Kapitan as a Cultural Heritage Site.

Abstract

The phenomenon of the circulation of illegal alcoholic beverages in certain areas has generated negative impacts on the community, particularly on the younger generation. This issue requires serious attention given the weak existing monitoring mechanisms, thus necessitating an in-depth examination of the social control efforts carried out by the local community. This study aims to describe the various forms of social monitoring implemented by the community and to identify the obstacles encountered in efforts to control the circulation of illegal alcoholic beverages in Kampung Air Dingin, Basa Ampek Balai Tapan District. The research employed a qualitative design with a descriptive approach. Data collection techniques were carried out through field observation and in-depth interviews with key informants. Data analysis refers to F. Ivan Nye’s theory of social control. The findings indicate that community monitoring is divided into two categories. First, direct control includes patrol operations and raids by police officers, counseling activities, the confiscation of evidence, monitoring by local youth groups, and warnings from community leaders. Second, indirect control is implemented through religious guidance by religious leaders and the magrib mengajar program initiated by the youth. The effectiveness of monitoring remains constrained by several factors, namely suboptimal law enforcement, the still-low level of residents’ awareness, and the ongoing tradition of consuming alcoholic beverages during wedding ceremonies. Stronger synergy between the community and law enforcement officers is needed to achieve effective social control.

Abstract

This research is driven by the contradictory phenomenon at University X, where its status as a "Disability-Friendly Campus" conceals underlying practices of marginalization within daily interactions. The study aims to analyze the mechanisms of euphemization, censorization, and misrecognition in perpetuating the dominance of hearing culture within an inclusive higher education setting. Adopting a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design, data were collected through observations and in-depth interviews via WhatsApp text messages with 10 deaf students. Participants were selected using snowball. The data were analyzed interactively—including reduction, display, and verification—and sharpened using Pierre Bourdieu's theory of symbolic violence. This theory assumes that power dominance operates subtly through the internalization of dominant group values, which are perceived as natural or taken for granted (doxa) by the dominated group. The results indicate that the claim of inclusivity at University X remains confined to the physical dimension, while symbolic violence persists through: (1) euphemization in the form of "special" treatment that paralyzes agency; (2) censorization through inaccessible auditory communication structures; and (3) misrecognition, where students internalize systemic barriers as personal failures. The novelty of this study lies in its application of the symbolic violence perspective to examine the gap between idealized policies and the social realities experienced by deaf students, which are often overlooked in conventional studies focusing primarily on physical accessibility.

Abstract

The transformation of the digital economy has changed employment patterns in peri-urban areas, including Buahbatu Village, Bandung Regency, Indonesia. This study aims to analyze how secondary and higher education graduates make employment decisions through digital platforms amid limited access to formal employment opportunities. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation involving ten graduate informants working in the informal digital sector. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman within the framework of James S. Coleman’s Rational Choice Theory. The findings show that graduates choose platform-based jobs such as freelancers, online resellers, content creators, and ride-hailing drivers as a form of adaptive rationality driven by economic needs, work flexibility, and limited access to formal labor markets. Social capital derived from family, peer networks, and digital communities plays an important role in providing job information, reducing uncertainty, and supporting adaptation to the digital economy. The study also finds that platform-based work has undergone a process of social normalization and legitimacy at the local level, where it is increasingly recognized as a valid form of employment. The novelty of this study lies in explaining graduate adaptive rationality in a peri-urban village context shaped by structural constraints in the formal labor market, strengthened digital social capital, and a gradual social legitimation process that transforms platform work from informal activity into socially recognized employment. Overall, digital employment decisions reflect not only economic considerations but also interactions between social structures, relational networks, and evolving work values in the digital era.

Abstract

The death of a spouse is an event that not only causes deep grief but also forces women to undergo a role transition as single mothers who must cope with various demands simultaneously. This study focuses on the dynamics of resilience among single mothers as they navigate the grieving process and rebuild their lives following the death of their spouse. The objective of this study is to understand how single mothers make sense of their loss, adapt to life changes, and develop strategies to cope with the various challenges following their husband’s death. The study employs a qualitative approach using a case study design involving one single mother and two significant others selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The results revealed six main themes: (1) complex emotional dynamics in coping with the loss of a spouse; (2) challenges and coping strategies in managing the family’s finances; (3) social conflicts and their impact on family relationships; (4) the role of social and family support in building resilience; (5) the transformation of the single mother’s role in the life changes following her partner’s death; and (6) hopes and motivations for building a future for her children. The novelty of this study lies in the finding that single mothers’ resilience is a dynamic process that emerges through the management of grief, the reframing of life, and the transformation of their identity as heads of household. Resilience is formed through the acceptance of loss, religious and social coping mechanisms, and support from family and the community, enabling single mothers to bounce back, maintain their parenting and economic roles, and rebuild a sense of purpose in life.

Abstract

This study examines the management of marital disputes in the indigenous community of Kampung Adat Banceuy, Subang Regency, which can affect social relations between families if not properly managed. Unlike previous studies that positioned Babadan Tenan within the normative perspective of customary law and Islamic law, this study aims to analyze the function of Babadan Tenan as a mediation and conflict resolution mechanism for marital disputes using Lewis A. Coser's functional conflict theory, particularly the concepts of the safety valve and the positive functions of conflict. The study employs a qualitative approach with a case study method through in-depth interviews, observation, and document analysis. The findings show that marital disputes are generally triggered by household economic problems, differing views between spouses, and arranged marriages. Babadan Tenan involves a three-stage resolution mechanism, namely pre-implementation, implementation, and post-implementation, carried out informally and flexibly by the customary leader as mediator. Tensions are channeled through Babadan Tenan, which functions as a safety valve to prevent conflicts from escalating further. Conflicts managed through Babadan Tenan also generate positive functions, as resolutions are directed toward solutions acceptable to both parties, including amicable separation. Agreements are grounded in the moral recognition of the customary community and help maintain social relations between families. This study affirms that customary mechanisms remain relevant as an alternative for resolving family conflicts based on local wisdom amid the modernization of law.

Abstract

The development of digital technology and increasing social mobility have changed the communication patterns of rural communities and have the potential to impact the sustainability of collective values that form the basis of social life. This study aims to analyze the shifting forms of communication patterns in the Tesabela Village community, the dynamics of social collectives that occur, and their implications for the sustainability of community values of togetherness. The study used a qualitative approach with a purposive sampling technique in selecting informants consisting of traditional leaders, religious leaders, youth leaders, and village officials who understand the social dynamics of the community. The number of informants was 8 people. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed descriptively-interpretively. The results of the study indicate that community communication patterns have shifted from symbolic-communal communication based on direct interaction to more personal, administrative, and supported by digital technology. However, social collective values have not disintegrated, but have transformed into a more contextual and situational form. Social solidarity is no longer built through routine daily interactions, but is actualized in social moments that have cultural significance. The novelty of this research lies in the finding that shifts in communication patterns in rural communities do not automatically lead to individualism, but rather give rise to new forms of social collectivity that adapt to technological developments and lifestyle changes. This finding enriches the study of the sociology of communication by demonstrating that digital communication transformation can go hand in hand with the sustainability of collective values in rural communities.

Abstract

Research on children who have dropped out of school has largely focused on economic factors and access to education, while the dimension of educational culture within families remains relatively understudied, particularly in urban contexts. This study aims to examine how educational culture is understood within the families of children who have dropped out of school and how such understandings influence educational continuation and discontinuation. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, data were collected through observations and in-depth interviews with 25 participants consisting of school dropout children and their family members in several areas of Bandung City. Drawing on the anthropology of education and Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of forms of capital, the study found that families continued to regard education as important and actively instilled educational values in their children. However, education was often understood pragmatically as a means of securing employment and improving the family’s economic condition. In some cases, working at a young age was considered more realistic than continuing schooling because it provided immediate income. Furthermore, economic constraints, negative academic experiences, and psychological pressures led some children and families to no longer prioritize schooling. The findings reveal that school dropout may occur even when education is valued, as educational aspirations are continuously negotiated against everyday needs, school experiences, and socio-economic pressures. These findings highlight the need for policies that focus not only on financial assistance but also on psychosocial support and culturally informed approaches.
