Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine the germination capacity of red chili peppers in various types and concentrations of Kasgotchar extract using a paper-based test method. This study used a 6 x 3 x 2 Factorial RAK design. The type of Kasgotchar extract is the first factor, with six types (K1 = Kasgotchar 1, K2 = Kasgotchar 2, K3 = Kasgotchar 3, K4 = Kasgotchar 4, K5 = Kasgotchar 5, K6 = Kasgotchar 6), and the second factor is the concentration of Kasgotchar extract, with three concentration levels (E1 = 5% Kasgotchar extract, E2 = 10% Kasgotchar extract, E3 = 15% Kasgotchar extract). The parameters observed in this germination process were the germination index and the germination potential, measured at seven and fourteen days after sowing. The results of study showed that the treatment with Kasgotchar extract type only significantly affected the germination index at seven and fourteen days after sowing, as well as the potential for germination at seven days. The Kasgotchar extract concentration treatment did not show any significant effect on the germination index and potential at all observation ages. Meanwhile, the interaction between the type of Kasgotchar extract and the concentration of Kasgotchar extract only had a significant effect on the germination potential at fourteen days of seedling age. The highest germination index and the germination potential were obtained by the treatment of Kasgotchar extract type 6 (2.39 and 0.88), the treatment with 5 % concentration of Kasgotchar extract (1.54 and 0.76), and the interaction treatment between Kasgotchar type 6 with 5% concentration of Kasgotchar extract (2.44 and 0.90).  Keywords: red chili, germination index, germination potential, kasgotchar, BSF

Abstract

This study was conducted at the experimental field of the Indonesian Community Development University (UPMI), Jalan Balai Desa Pasar 12 Marendal II, Patumbak District, Deli Serdang Regency, Medan. The elevation of the site is approximately 40 metres above sea level. The study was conducted from May to July 2025. The efforts required to meet the production needs of red onions involve enhancing soil productivity by utilising NPK fertiliser and dolomite to achieve maximum red onion production. This study employed a randomised block design (RBD) with two factors: NPK fertiliser and dolomite fertiliser. For precision, the experiment was repeated three times. The first factor was NPK fertiliser (N) with four levels: N0 = Control, N1 = 10 g/polybag, N2 = 20 g/polybag, and N3 = 30 g/plant. The second factor was dolomite (D) with four levels: D0 = Control, D1 = 10 g/polybag, D2 = 20 g/polybag, and D3 = 30 g/polybag. The results of the ANOVA test that showed significant effects were followed up with a 5% DMRT test. The response of NPK fertiliser treatment to plant height at 2 mst was significantly influenced, but at plant height observations of 3 mst, 4 mst, number of leaves, number of tubers per plant, tuber diameter, and tuber weight, there was no significant effect but an increase in each treatment. The best treatment average in this study was N2 = 20 g/plant. In this case, the dose or level of dolomite treatment should be increased further to achieve maximum production. Keywords: shallots, dolomite fertiliser, NPK fertiliser

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of coconut water seed soaking duration and flash fertilizer application on the growth and yield of mung bean (Vigna radiata L.). The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of the Faculty of Agriculture, Indonesian Community Development University, Medan, from May to August 2024. A Randomized Block Design (RBD) with two factors and three replications was employed. The first factor was coconut water soaking duration (0, 2, 4, and 6 hours), while the second factor was flash fertilizer application (0, 0.25, 0.5, and 1 cc/L). Observed parameters included plant height, number of leaves, flowering age, pod weight per plant, and pod weight per plot. Results indicated that a soaking duration of 6 hours (P3) had a highly significant effect on all observed parameters, producing the highest plant height, leaf number, and pod weight. Similarly, flash fertilizer at 1 cc/L (K3) promoted better vegetative and reproductive growth compared to other treatments. The interaction of P3K3 produced the best performance across growth and yield traits. These findings suggest that combining coconut water seed soaking for 6 hours with flash fertilizer application at 1 cc/L is an effective strategy to enhance mung bean productivity. Keywords: mung bean, coconut water, flash fertilizer, growth, yield

Abstract

One of the pests that attack long bean plants is aphid. Aphid pest control can uce herbal insecticides, namely herbal solutions derived from dragon scale fern leaves. Dragon scale fern leaves contain flavonoids, saponins, phenolics, essential oil and tannins. This study aims to determine the effect of herbal solutions of dragon scale fern leaves on the mortality of aphid in long bean plants and to determine the dose of herbal solutions of dragon scale fern leaves that are effective against the mortality of aphid in long bean plants. The method used in this study is the completely Randomized Design (CRD) method with 5 treatments and 4 replications, namely the control treatment of water/aquadest, 35ml, 45ml, 55ml, 65ml of dragon scale fern leaf herbal solution . Observations were made every day for 168 hours/7 days. The research data are presented in the form of graphs/tables. The result of quantitative observations were analyzed using Analysis of Variance. There was a significant difference between the effects of the treatments tested, s further testing was carried out using Ducan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at a level of 5%. The P4 dose treatment (65ml of dragon scale fern leaft herbal solution) is the best and most effective treatment/dose for aphid mortality with a percentage of 88.75% at 7 days/168 hours after application. The high percentage of mortality and efficacy of dragon scale fern leaf herbal solution against aphid is due tothe influence of compounds contained in the dragom scale fern leaf solution, namely flavonoids which are toxic (kill) to aphid pests. Based on the Analysis of variance which was then carried out with a further DMRT test at a level of 5%, it showed that there was a significant difference in each dose of dragon scale fern leaf herbal solution Keywords : dragon scale fern, mortality, aphid

Abstract

Agroforestry is a practice that combines the cultivation of food crops and forests in an integrated system. This method has proven effective in improving food security and environmental sustainability. The aim of this study is to analyze the ecological and economic factors of the community in strengthening food security with an agroforestry system in South Tapanuli Regency. Data collection used a purposive sampling method, based on specific traits and characteristics. Respondents were land managers under forest stands with an agroforestry pattern. The population size was determined using the Slovin formula. The analysis used was descriptive and quantitative. The results showed that agroforestry has an important economic function for the local community. Its primary role is not food production but rather as a source of income and capital. Income from agroforestry generally covers daily needs from the regularly harvested produce. The commodities grown on agroforestry land include corn, cocoa, coffee, snake fruit, oil palm with stands of rubber, sugar palm, and durian. On a land area of two to three hectares, the average yield of corn is 0.9 tons/year, cocoa 1.2 tons/year, coffee 1.08 tons/year, snake fruit 69.6 tons/year, palm oil 11.29 tons/year, palm sugar 0.57 tons/year, rubber 14.64 tons/year, and durian 1,250 fruits/year. Through its ecological function, agroforestry can reduce the rate of surface flow, leaching of soil nutrients and erosion, because the presence of trees prevents these processes from occurring, so that the nutrient content in the soil will be maintained. Keywords: agroforestry, ecology, economics and food security
