Abstract

Although cerai gugat (female-initiated divorce) is theoretically expected to be uncommon within the patrilineal-patriarchal Mandailing social system, judicial records consistently show that its incidence exceeded cerai talak (male-initiated divorce) in Mandailing Natal Regency from 2019 to 2023. This study examines why Mandailing women increasingly initiate divorce by analyzing their demographic characteristics, the structural factors operating at the family, customary, and state levels, and the ways in which women exercise agency within these structures. The research employed an explanatory sequential mixed methods design, integrating descriptive statistical analysis of secondary court data with qualitative data obtained through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. The findings demonstrate that women's families of origin (mora) function as essential sources of allocative resources and authoritative resources, while customary institutions, including halang batang and pasahatkon, together with formal legal institutions, provide legitimate mechanisms through which women negotiate and pursue divorce. The study concludes that Mandailing women are not merely constrained by patriarchal structures but actively mobilize enabling structural resources to exercise agency and make autonomous marital decisions, thereby illustrating the dynamic interplay between structure and agency as conceptualized in Anthony Giddens' structuration theory.

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of plantation commodities in Adolina, Perbaungan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, from tobacco to oil palm between 1980 and 2020. The research is motivated by structural changes in the plantation economy of East Sumatra, a region historically recognized as a major producer of high-quality Deli tobacco. Driven by shifts in global market demand, rising production costs, and government policies promoting oil palm expansion, plantation land in Adolina gradually shifted from tobacco cultivation to oil palm estates. Employing the historical method with a qualitative approach through heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, this study utilizes oral testimonies, archival records, plantation documents, statistical data, books, and scholarly journals. The findings reveal that the transition occurred progressively and was influenced by economic, social, agrarian, and policy-related factors. The conversion of plantation land altered labor structures from seasonal tobacco employment to more permanent oil palm labor arrangements and reshaped local economic patterns toward market-oriented livelihoods. The study argues that the transformation not only reflects economic adaptation but also contributes to the historiography of East Sumatran plantations by demonstrating the historical continuity and restructuring of agrarian relations in the post-colonial plantation sector.

Abstract

This article analyzes Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi) political strategies across five electoral contests in Indonesia from 2005 to 2024. The study employs a qualitative approach using a literature review method to examine patterns of political communication, campaign strategy, and power consolidation undertaken by Jokowi. It uses an integrative theoretical framework that combines populism theory, political communication theory, and coalition theory as analytical tools. The findings indicate that Jokowi’s dialogic, egalitarian, and people-oriented leadership style served as the primary foundation of his electoral success. He relied on strategies such as blusukan (impromptu visits to communities), social media use, and program-based campaigns focused on pro-people policies, including the restructuring of street vendors, the Jakarta Health Card (Kartu Jakarta Sehat), and the Jakarta Smart Card (Kartu Jakarta Pintar). Party consolidation and broad coalition-building further strengthened his political base, supported by digital volunteers and millennial groups. In the 2014 and 2019 presidential elections, Jokowi capitalized on his image of simplicity, closeness to the people, and endorsements from influential figures such as Jusuf Kalla and Ma’ruf Amin. Approaching the 2024 election, Jokowi’s political influence remained significant despite his not running for office, with the so-called “Jokowi effect” playing a role in shaping voter support. This study argues that Jokowi’s success should not be understood merely as a combination of leadership style and campaign techniques, but as a systematic integration of populist appeal, adaptive political communication, and pragmatic coalition-building. Theoretically, this research contributes to the development of electoral politics studies in Indonesia by offering an integrative analytical framework for understanding contemporary political leadership. Practically, the findings provide insights for political actors and campaign strategists in designing effective, adaptive, and context-sensitive electoral strategies.

Abstract

The oceans hold substantial potential for supporting global economic development. China has sought to revitalize the Maritime Silk Road as part of its maritime connectivity agenda under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). This qualitative study examines how China integrates blue economy principles into its maritime strategy within the Belt and Road Initiative’s maritime framework. Using thematic analysis of secondary sources, including academic literature, policy reports, and media materials, the study analyzes the role of the blue economy in shaping China’s maritime trade and international cooperation. The findings indicate that the incorporation of blue economy principles functions as an instrument of maritime strategy by facilitating sustainable port development, strengthening maritime logistics networks, and expanding economic partnerships along the Maritime Silk Road. This mechanism enables China to align environmental sustainability with strategic economic objectives while reinforcing its maritime influence within the BRI framework. The study demonstrates how the integration of blue economy principles supports China’s broader maritime strategy and economic diplomacy within the global maritime order.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of the talaqi method in Qur’an memorization integrated with the One Day One Ayat approach at Al-Farabi Integrated Junior High School, Deli Serdang, in response to the need for effective, developmentally appropriate tahfizh strategies at the secondary level. The study addresses how the combined approach is implemented, the outcomes it produces, and the challenges encountered in practice. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with teachers and administrators, and analysis of program documentation. The findings indicate that the tahfizh program is systematically organized through grade-based memorization targets, daily talaqi sessions complemented by muraja’ah, and periodic evaluations. This implementation contributes to improved accuracy of recitation, stronger memorization (mutqin), and increased student discipline, supported by teacher commitment, a conducive Islamic school culture, standardized mushaf, and parental involvement. Nevertheless, limitations in instructional time, variations in students’ memorization abilities, and uneven family support remain significant challenges. The study argues that integrating talaqi with the One Day One Ayat approach offers a pedagogically sound and sustainable model for Qur’an memorization in Islamic secondary education.

Abstract

The increasing moral challenges faced by adolescents in contemporary society have raised concerns regarding the effectiveness of family-based moral education and counseling practices. This study examines how the philosophy of idealism can contribute to the reconstruction of adolescent moral values within the context of family counseling. Epistemologically, idealism is grounded in the philosophical traditions of Plato’s Idea of the Good, Kant’s Categorical Imperative, and Hegel’s concept of Sittlichkeit, all of which emphasize that ultimate reality is spiritual and that moral values originate from reason. Employing a philosophical hermeneutic and genealogical approach, this study analyzes the conceptual intersections between Educational Philosophy and Family Counseling. The findings reveal a complementary relationship in which Educational Philosophy emphasizes moral formation through rationality and character cultivation, whereas Family Counseling focuses on resolving value conflicts through empathic and dialogical interactions. The integration of these perspectives generates an idealism-based family counseling framework that combines dialogical ethics and reflective pedagogy. This framework not only addresses adolescent behavioral conflicts but also facilitates the restoration of conscience through moral reconstruction within contemporary, pluralistic family systems. Consequently, idealism-based family counseling offers a holistic and philosophically grounded approach to fostering adolescents’ moral development within the family ecosystem.

Abstract

Online media play a significant role in shaping public understanding through the framing of issues and public figures. This study addresses the limited attention to how media framing constructs legitimacy and public image in Indonesian digital journalism by analyzing the coverage of Kompas.com on Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa using Robert N. Entman’s framing model. The research employs a qualitative approach with framing analysis of ten news articles published in October 2025. Data were collected through documentation and analyzed based on four elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgments, and treatment recommendations. The findings indicate that Kompas.com constructs Purbaya’s image dynamically through patterns of legitimacy, criticism, conflict neutralization, and positioning as a problem-solving actor. He is portrayed as a professional and rational figure, while also receiving critical framing related to authority and communication style. The framing tends to maintain balance by providing space for clarification and multiple perspectives. These results demonstrate that media framing functions not only as a mechanism of selection and emphasis but also as a process of negotiating public legitimacy in digital journalism. The study contributes to the development of Entman’s framing model by highlighting its contextual application in Indonesian online media.

Abstract

Femicide represents the most extreme manifestation of gender-based violence and therefore cannot be understood merely as an ordinary criminal act, but must be situated as a human security concern requiring state attention. This study examines femicide in Indonesia as a non-traditional security threat through the lenses of human security and feminist security studies, focusing on how the state responds through legal frameworks, institutional arrangements, and policy implementation. The study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach based on a critical review of relevant literature. The findings reveal the absence of explicit legal recognition of femicide within Indonesian law, resulting in a persistent gap between normative commitments and practical enforcement. This gap is reflected in fragmented data collection mechanisms and limited institutional capacity among law enforcement agencies. By reframing femicide as a security issue rather than a conventional criminal matter, this study contributes to existing scholarship by extending Indonesian femicide debates into the field of security studies and highlighting the urgency of a more integrated state response in legal enforcement and institutional strengthening.

Abstract

This study investigates the spread of venereal diseases, particularly syphilis and gonorrhea, in the Mangkunegaran Principality during the second half of the nineteenth century by examining the interplay between military modernization, colonial governance, and public health. It addresses the question of how the Mangkunegaran authorities responded to the growing prevalence of these diseases amid increasing interaction with the Dutch colonial administration. Employing the historical method through heuristic inquiry, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, the study analyzes archival records, colonial regulations, and contemporary historical sources, with particular attention to the Reglement op de Publieke Vrouwen (1852). The findings demonstrate that the spread of venereal diseases was closely associated with military mobility, prostitution, and expanding colonial social networks, prompting the adoption of more systematic health surveillance and regulatory measures. These developments marked a gradual transition from indigenous healing practices toward institutionalized public health policies shaped by colonial medical discourse. The study concludes that the management of venereal diseases in Mangkunegaran reflected not only medical concerns but also broader transformations in state administration, social control, and colonial intervention in nineteenth-century Java.

Abstract

This study examines the framing of corruption news in Tribun Medan online media during the 2024–2025 period using Robert N. Entman’s framing model. The research addresses how corruption is constructed through the dimensions of problem definition, causal interpretation, moral evaluation, and treatment recommendation. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected through news text documentation and in-depth interviews with the Law and Criminal Editor of Tribun Medan to strengthen data validity through source triangulation. The findings reveal that Tribun Medan frames corruption not merely as a legal issue involving state financial losses but also as a social problem affecting public rights and religious facilities. The identified causes emphasize systematic planning manipulation and weak oversight in strategic infrastructure projects. Moral evaluations are articulated through representations of public concern and social accountability toward perpetrators, while recommended solutions focus on judicial transparency and institutional reform within the bureaucracy. The study’s novelty lies in its integration of textual framing analysis with editorial perspectives to explain how a local online news outlet constructs corruption narratives within the socio-cultural context of North Sumatra. The findings indicate that Tribun Medan performs a watchdog journalism function by fostering public awareness and reinforcing collective social responsibility regarding corruption issues.
