Abstract

Communication apprehension (CA) is the anxiety of an individual associated with actual or anticipated communication with others. The Personal Report of Communication Apprehension - 24 Items Version (PRCA-24) is a measurement implement constructed to measure the level of CA of an individual. This research was aimed at the evaluation of the use of the PRCA-24 within the context of research in Indonesia. The participants in the research comprised 336 undergraduate program university students, in an Indonesian university. The evaluation of this implement of measurement used, as an evidence source, validity, based upon internal consistency (analysis of the factors of exploration and reliability testing), and relatedness to another variable, i.e., assertiveness. Assertiveness was selected as the external variable, which predisposes people to communications apprehension behavior, and is measured using the Rathus Assertiveness Schedule (RAS). The results of the factor analysis and reliability testing indicated the dependability of the PRCA-24. This measurement implement also had positive and significant correlations with the variable of predisposition. This research produced implications for use of the PRCA-24 in a variety of different contexts, which will be further discussed in this paper. Abstract

The psychological well-being (PWB) of working mothers has an important influence both for family well-being and work performance. The increasing number of working women, and the existence of various changes in work, require a new explanation of the predictors of working mothers’ PWB. The purpose of this study was to examine the model of personal and interpersonal factors related to the PWB of working mothers, as mediated by work-family balance (WFB). The hypothesis of this study was a theoretical model stating the influence of physical activities and transformational leadership on PWB, through WFB, in accordance with empirical data. The subjects of the study were 536 working mothers of children, coming from Muslim communities and working under the directions of supervisors. The data collection used the Psychological Well-Being Scale, the Work-Family Balance Scale, the Physical Activities Scale, and the Scale of Perception of Transformational Leadership. The data analysis used the Structural Equation Model (SEM). The research results showed that physical activities and transformational leadership proved to have an effect upon the PWB of working mothers, through WFB. Abstract

As an adaptive behavior, career exploration needs to be developed in vocational students who have difficulty in getting a job. The more career-related information obtained, the more likely it is for them to find the right job or the one that has the desired impact. To develop career exploration behavior in vocational students, it is necessary to know the factors that play a role in improving career exploration behavior. This study examined the mediating role of career decision self-efficacy in the relationship between parenting styles and career exploration behavior. Participants in this study were 824 senior vocational high school students from nine schools in Jakarta and Depok. The Parental Authority Questionnaire, Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form, and Career Exploration Survey were used to measure parenting styles, career decision self-efficacy and career exploration behavior. The results showed that career decision self-efficacy fully mediated the influenced of authoritative parenting styles in mothers and fathers on career exploration behavior in vocational students. Interestingly, the authoritarian parenting style was also found to have a positive and significant influence on career exploration behavior in vocational students. The implication and limitation are discussed. Abstract

Many tertiary students do not complete all the steps of their tertiary education because they encounter difficulties in adjusting themselves to university life. The aim of this research was to determine the role of upbringing (by both father and mother) and the “college self-efficacy” (the self-confidence of the students in completing their study obligations) regarding college adjustment (CA) [US term] of first-year students of the Faculty of Technology of University X [name concealed], in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. 139 students were involved in this research, and completed an instrument to measure the research variables. The research data was processed, using regression analysis, to determine the contributions of patterns of upbringing and self-efficacy of the students, regarding college adjustment. Based upon the analysis conducted in the research, the results indicated that the parenting style and college self-efficacy generally had a role in the college adjustment of the student. However, the results more especially indicated that a pattern of permissive maternal upbringing had a significant negative contribution to their CA, and that college self-efficacy had a significant positive contribution to that CA. This paper then discusses the magnitude of the role of the parent, compared to the self-efficacy of the student in his or her achievements, when undertaking tertiary education.

Abstract

Adolescents are prone to emotional turmoil. Feedback received from the environment, as a form of support, is required in the process of emotion regulation. Thus, it can be assumed that perceived social support will be associated with emotion regulation. However, research linking both variables has so far included only the relationship between quality social support and a single one of the emotion regulation strategies in late adolescence. This study fills the gap, and aims to examine the relationship between quantity and quality of perceived social support with emotion regulation strategies across the entire adolescent age range in Jakarta. The measuring tool used was the Social Support Questionnaire 6 (quantity of perceived social support and perceived social support satisfaction) and the Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression strategies). The sample comprised adolescents in Jakarta who had achieved formal educational levels, and who came from families with middle to lower level Status Ekonomi Social (SES; Socio-Economic Status; N = 427). The authors used Pearson Product Correlation and linear regression data analysis techniques. The results showed that thequantity of perceived social support was not significantly associated witheither dimension of emotion regulation. Abstract

Being a teacher was not as simple as initially thought, not only as a profession but also as a role with great responsibility within. The aim of this study was to construct a conceptual model of teachers’ work engagement in a school setting by reviewing several literatures. The articles were obtained from three journal databases, namely: (1) Science Direct; (2) Springer Link; (3) and Portal Garuda, with the limitation of being published in the recent 10 years of the time of this study (2009 - 2019). The initial search resulted in 789 articles which were then selected by using inclusion and exclusion criteria to obtain four articles (N = 4) employing quantitative approach as the final result. Based on the review, several variables had significant correlation to teachers’ work engagement. These variables were then grouped as antecedent and consequence variables. The conceptual model of teachers’ work engagement in this study was expected to be beneficial as consideration in managing education.
