Abstract

Transexuality is one of the abnormal problems faced by adolescent and adults. The problem is felt in universities in Malaysia. The present study attempts to examine the abnormalities faced by transexuals as compared to normal subject. Subjects were 3 students with transexual problem and 3 normal students. Subject were asked to draw a man. Drawings made by normal and abnormal persons were compared. The study showed that there was a difference in terms of gender of the persons drawings. Transexuals tend to draw woman photographs. Students with transexual problems tend to view women as representing their selves which is in contrast to normal students who tend to draw a person according to his own gender. Transexual students was found to go through the same socialisation process of gender role as those experienced by women.

Abstract

One hundred and twenty students were randomly assigned to a survey on knowledge and high risk HIV/AIDS sexual behavior. Data were collected through a set of questionnaires from students (N = 120; 60 males and 60 females), and analysed with t-test ANOVA and Pearson product moment correlation to determine the correlation between identified variables. In general, students have a good knowledge and decent sexual behavior. As such, there is no correlation between their knowledge and their behavior which could be infected with the HIV. There are more male students practicing high risk sexual behavior compared to female students. Sexual knowledge of the students didn't depend on sex, ethnicity, and study program. Ethnicity and study program didn't differentiate the IPTA student's sexual behavior.

Abstract

Vygotsky owns a notion of what play is to preschoolers. Play is not just an aimless activity for young children. It is a median to learn to solve a problem. Problem solving skills can be taught through indulging in a task which is very difficult if not impossible to solve by the child alone. He introduces a concept called scaffolding which allows potential cognitive development to take place in the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). ScaffoIding is aimed at guiding the child to solve problem using strategies created in the social interaction with the help of a more knowledgeable or capable person.

Abstract

The goal of the present research was to construct a psychological measurement of creativity through a personality approach. This tool is aimed to identify creative potentials referring to creative spirit, a willingness to act toward or producing new beneficial ideas. According to Ayan (1997), the creative spirit encompasses four main components of the personality characteristics: curiousity, openness to experiences, tolerance towards risks, and energy. These four characteristics of personality are revealed through a number of items or statements in Likert scale. So the C.O.R.E. scale is based on these theoretical aspects (curiousity, openness, risks, and energy). Subjects were high school and university students (N = 332; males and females), coming from urban as well as suburbans. The data were analysed with the factor analyses. Results reveal that this scale could identify four personality characteristics conforming to the theory. This scale has a high reliability coefficient and positively correlated to an existing creativity test, hence this scale should be a valid tool to measure creativity.

Abstract

Although research on creativity has been spearheaded by Guilford since 1979, a concensus of a standardized definition is not yet reached. Generally speaking, there are two approaches toward creativity, namely aptitude approach and personality characteristics approach (Albert & Runco, 1987). Suharnan (2002) prefered the personality characteristics approach and make a c.o.r.e. scale to measure creative spirit. Some weaknesses and shortages in structuring, exposing, and discussion of research results cast doubt on the credibility of the c.o.r.e. scale. The theoretical, methodological, and statistical analysis weaknesses are discussed.

Abstract

The unique gifted-child characteristics led to unique life expectancies in their interaction with the environment. The environment's reaction against the gifted child characteristics manifestation affects the susceptibility of the gifted child towards socio-economical and personality problems, especially concerning his/her self-concept. Some important factors influencing personality development of the gifted child are: confusing identity, imbalanced development, isolation, conflict between friendship and actualization, perfectionism, and various worries due to excessive emotional sensitivity. Some ways are proposed to help gifted children to gain a positive self-image, among others: creating positive experience through interaction with the environment, appreciating individual differences, encouraging opportunities to actualization, offering realistic goals and exposing to challenges according to their potentials.

Abstract

Basic education in Indonesia is considered incapable to lead the students to meet their optimal performance. Students are not actively involved in the learning process; the process as well as the learning material are not interesting due to the lack of correlation with the daily life activities, needs, and life experiences of the students. Based on these situations, an improvement in education leading towards quality enhancement is urgent. Correlating content and learning process with student needs and experience, and concentrating learning activities on students and enlargement of learning domains are needed. Sidoarjo School Improvement Programme 2000 (SSIP 2000) was programmed with the aim to enhance the quality of learning sistematically based on (a) Rosenshine's direct instruction, (b) learning process improvement, replacing instructional teaching into interactional learning, from teacher centred to student centred learning. SSIP 2000 was implemented through 3 phases: development, implementation, and evaluation of the learning package. Positive as well as negative experiences obtained by the Learning Development Package Team are discussed.

Abstract

The study was intended to determine the effects of different types of pragmatic schemas on the performance in conditional reasoning. Fifty seven freshmen of Faculty of Psychology, Gadjah Mada University (GMU), participated in the study. Deductive reasoning instrument consisted of twelve problems adapted from Klaczynski (1993) with minor revision. Arbitrer, pemission, and causal schemas were used in this study. The results show that most students failed to demonstrate conditional reasoning in all three types of pragmatic schemas. Permission schema was not solved better than the two other schemas.

Abstract

What a human being would be depends on the rearing method someone got during the infant, children, and adolescent years. Studies reveal very significant children cognitive development rearing variables. Due to the gradual cognitive development, the need at the specific stage would be different. Nurturant rearing requires a responsive mother, perceptive on the requirements of her baby; sensitive-knowing what her baby needs; timing- when her baby needs something; specificity-every baby has his/her own needs different from other's needs. According to these aspects, the rearing variable a baby of six month old needs would be the environmental organisation management by the mother, for a 7-11 months, the environmental organisation, and for a 12 months baby, an affective environment.
