Abstract

The integration of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) vocabulary into English Language Teaching (ELT) is becoming increasingly crucial in higher education, particularly for engineering students who must engage with global technical literature and communication. This study explores the challenges and opportunities in incorporating renewable energy-related vocabulary into the English curriculum of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Mataram. Through a mixed-methods approach involving a needs analysis, classroom observations, and interviews with students and instructors, the research identifies key linguistic gaps, pedagogical constraints, and resource limitations. Simultaneously, the study highlights the potential of local renewable energy contexts such as solar, wind, and micro-hydro systems in West Nusa Tenggara as culturally relevant entry points for vocabulary acquisition. The findings suggest that embedding STEM vocabulary within project-based and content-based instruction not only enhances technical language proficiency but also fosters students' critical awareness of sustainable energy development in their region. This paper concludes with pedagogical recommendations for curriculum designers and English instructors aiming to align ELT more closely with the needs of engineering disciplines.

Abstract

This study examines the alignment of Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) and Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in summative assessments within the context of the Merdeka curriculum at SMP Amore Prime School. The research utilizes a descriptive quantitative approach, analyzing English assessment items for grade 8 students in the 2024-2025 academic year. Data was collected from 51 summative test items, categorized according to Bloom’s revised taxonomy, with a focus on the distribution of LOTS and HOTS. The findings reveal a dominance of LOTS-based items (70.6%) over HOTS-based items (29.4%), indicating a gap in the ideal implementation of the Merdeka curriculum, which emphasizes critical thinking, creativity, and independent learning. Although the assessment items reflect an attempt to integrate both cognitive levels, the imbalance suggests that traditional rote-learning practices still prevail, particularly in assessing foundational knowledge. This study highlights the need for greater emphasis on HOTS in language assessments to fully align with the goals of the Merdeka curriculum and support the development of students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of everyday language in the context of interpersonal communication using a psycholinguistic approach in an academic setting. Through in-depth interviews, document analysis, and psycholinguistic studies, findings reveal variations in language style depending on the communication context. Students tend to adapt their language according to the situation, both inside and outside the classroom. Text message analysis also reveals the impact of social media on language use. The positive correlation between positive language expressions and positive emotions suggests that language can reflect and influence the emotional atmosphere in interpersonal communication. Practical implications include the development of communication training programs tailored to specific contexts, while recommendations for further research involve further exploration of the influence of social media and cross-cultural research on changes in everyday language. Keywords: Language, Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Psycholinguistic Studies.

Abstract

AbstractThe objective of this study was to identify the reasons behind the realization of modality in teacher-to-teacher talk of online learning. The data of this study consisted of sentences that expressed modality, uttered by five primary school teachers as they discussed online learning. In addition, the teachers’ responses during interviews were also used to provide deeper insights into the reasons for their use of modality. The data were collected by using three main instruments, namely: observation sheet, interview sheet, and voice recorder. The data analysis followed the three stages of qualitative data analysis, namely: data condensation, data display, and drawing and verifying conclusions. The findings revealed that the use of modality in teacher-to-teacher talk of online learning was affected primarily by tenor. This includes the roles the teachers played during the interaction, which were shaped by elements such as power, contact, affect, and formality. Furthermore, modality was also realized due to the values that teachers attached to online learning. Most of the teachers expressed negative attitudes and preferences, indicating dissatisfaction or discomfort with the practice. Therefore, it is important for the government and policymakers to take teachers’ perceptions into account when designing and implementing educational policies, particularly those involving online learning in Indonesia. Keywords: modality, teacher-to-teacher talk, online learning, tenor.

Abstract

This article deals with improving reading skill using the Flipped Learning Model for Sociology students at Islamic University of Balitar. The study was done using classroom action research. Data was collected through a critical reading test, observing students’ participation, and interviews. The study found that students’ critical reading skills were initially low and they lacked the initiative to practice. After using the Flipped Learning Model for two cycles, improvements in their critical reading were observed. The model encouraged twelve Sociology students to participate in learning both in and out of class. The model helped students analyze and evaluate texts, but they still struggled to internalize information and form ideas, as this requires more practice.  In the first round of using the Flipped Learning Model, students did better but didn't meet the success target. The highest score was 80 and the mean was 66.56. In the second test, the sociology students did great, with the highest score being 88 and the average score 76.31, which is above the success target. This score shows they really understand and can use what they learned. Within the academic discipline of Sociology, students are frequently tasked with the examination and interpretation of intricate texts and theoretical frameworks. In such a context, the Flipped Learning Model emerges as a particularly advantageous pedagogical approach. It facilitates a self-paced learning environment, enabling students to engage with the material in a manner that aligns with their individual learning rhythms.

Abstract

Interjection is one of the language elements that represent spontaneous and direct expression of emotion. This research aims to describe the form, meaning, and function of interjections in the novel Me Before You by Jojo Moyes, and relate them to the category of emotional expression. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with semantic approach. The research data are sentences and dialogs containing interjections in the novel. The data collection technique is done by reading the text thoroughly, recording the interjections that appear, and classifying them into interjection categories based on Wierzbicka's theory. Data analysis includes identifying interjection forms, explaining literal and contextual meanings, determining the function of interjections in the storyline, and mapping emotion categories based on Jovanovic’s framework. The results show that emotive interjections in the novel mostly represent the emotions of surprise, anger, fear, contempt, and pity; volitive interjections express impatience, enthusiasm, irritation, and sympathy; while cognitive interjections signify triumph, wonder, approval, confusion, and surprise. Interjections not only function as expressions of emotion, but also support character development, create story atmosphere, and move the plot. This research is expected to enrich the semantic study of interjections in literary texts, as well as to serve as a reference.
