Abstract

Structural gender inequality persists in Sundanese society despite the cultural philosophy of silih asah, silih asih, and silih asuh, while folklore continues to transmit gender norms across generations. However, studies examining Sundanese folklore through a local feminist perspective to support gender literacy remain limited. This study investigates patterns of women's representation, identifies the local feminist values embedded in four Sundanese folktales (Sangkuriang, Lutung Kasarung, Nyi Pohaci Sanghyang Sri, and Nyi Anteh), and explores their potential contribution to gender-literacy learning within Indonesia's Independent Curriculum. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the study integrates content and thematic analysis through three coding stages (open coding, focused coding, and thematic synthesis) with credibility enhanced by source triangulation and multi-coder verification. The findings reveal three dialectically interconnected models of women's representation: domestic-submissive, resistant-empowered, and ambivalent figures. These representations embody four interrelated local feminist values: inner fortitude, moral integrity, relational wisdom, and non-confrontational cultural resistance. The study argues that these values constitute an indigenous feminist epistemology that complements and extends dominant Western feminist frameworks by emphasizing culturally embedded forms of agency and resistance. Practically, the findings demonstrate the pedagogical potential of Sundanese folklore as culturally responsive learning materials for fostering students' critical gender literacy, although further classroom-based intervention studies are needed to evaluate their instructional effectiveness.

Abstract

Current digital public spheres provide a new medium for one Indonesian grassroots community group to bring sound horeg as its local cultural expression into national discussions. From an opposing side, dominant discourses from formal authorities and mainstream media continuously frame the practice of sound horeg as a social threat. This condition raises the urgency to examine subcultural actors' strategies in negotiating stigma and seizing the cultural legitimacy of sound horeg within Indonesian society. Proceeding from this issue, this study examines sound horeg as Indonesian popular culture situated within public debates on noise, morality, and social order. The research aims to analyze sound horeg representation and its identity negotiation through Memed Potensio's narrative as a practitioner in the Aduan Masyarakat program on Trètan Universe's YouTube channel. The qualitative descriptive method uses Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis integrated with Stuart Hall’s representation theory. Data obtained from the relevant episode's transcription were analyzed across textual, discourse practice, and sociocultural dimensions. The study concludes that sound horeg discourse in digital media spaces operates as a counter-practice resisting dominant cultural hegemony. Subcultural actors successfully deconstruct negative stigmas like 'illegal', 'immoral', and 'tacky' labels attached by formal authorities and urbanites. This discursive practice strategically shifts sound horeg from a mere social disturbance into a manifestation of collective identity legitimacy, communal solidarity, and cultural sovereignty for grassroots communities and the local working class. Theoretically, this research expands the application of critical discourse analysis to Indonesian local popular culture phenomena.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery in second language acquisition encompasses both breadth (the number of words known) and depth (the quality of lexical knowledge, including semantic relations and collocations). This exploratory study investigates the characteristics of Indonesian vocabulary breadth and depth among ten Thai students enrolled in the BIPA program at UIN K.H. Abdurrahman Wahid Pekalongan. Given the small and purposive sample, findings are contextual and exploratory rather than generalizable. Using a mixed-methods explanatory sequential design, the study employed the Vocabulary Size Test (VST) for breadth and the Word Associates Test (WAT) for depth measurement, supplemented by semi-structured interviews. Results reveal a moderate vocabulary size with strong mastery of high-frequency words but substantial gaps in academic and low-frequency vocabulary. Depth profiles were uneven: synonym knowledge was comparatively stronger, while collocational competence—particularly idiomatic collocations—was markedly weak. Pattani Malay lexical transfer emerged as the primary source of collocational errors. These findings carry pedagogical implications for differentiated vocabulary instruction in BIPA, particularly through the development of academic vocabulary learning strategies and explicit collocation teaching informed by contrastive analysis of Pattani Malay and Indonesian.

Abstract

This study examines Mobile Legends as a popular digital medium that recontextualizes Indonesian literary and folkloric narratives through game characters. Previous studies on Mobile Legends have mainly focused on visual representation, cultural identity, gender, and player behavior, while the relation between Indonesian literary sources and game narratives through mimetic and narrative analysis remains less explored. This study aims to reveal the mimetic patterns and narrative recontextualization of Gatotkaca and Kadita in Mobile Legends. Using a qualitative interpretive method, this study applies Abrams’s mimetic perspective and Greimas’s narrative analysis to examine character lore, hero descriptions, visual-audiovisual elements, and intertextual relations with the narratives of Gatotkaca, Nyi Roro Kidul, Putri Kandita, the Mahabharata, wayang traditions, and related Indonesian literary-folkloric sources. The findings show that Gatotkaca and Kadita are transformed through three levels of mimesis: idea, sensory-cultural form, and artistic-digital work. Gatotkaca is recontextualized from a wayang heroic figure into a ludic subject oriented toward defense, attack, and competitive gameplay, while Kadita is transformed from a mythic sea queen figure into a mage hero whose sacred maritime power becomes a playable ability. This study contributes by integrating Abrams’s mimesis and Greimas’s narrative structure to explain how Indonesian literary figures are reshaped into narrative, visual, and ludic functions in mobile game media.

Abstract

Students' ability to interpret implicit meanings, symbolism, and social criticism in literary texts remains limited, despite these competencies being fundamental to literary literacy and higher-order reading comprehension. Existing studies have predominantly assessed general reading proficiency, with relatively little attention to the cognitive processes underlying literary reading. This study aims to examine students' literary reading abilities based on cognitive processes and identify their levels of literary literacy through their responses to A.A. Navis's short story Robohnya Surau Kami. The study is grounded in the cognitive reading process framework and Kintsch's Construction–Integration Model, which conceptualizes reading comprehension as the dynamic construction of meaning through interactions among textual information, prior knowledge, and inferential reasoning. Employing a quantitative descriptive design, the study involved 31 Indonesian senior high school students who completed a multiple-choice literary literacy test measuring six cognitive processes: searching for information, understanding, analyzing, inferring, synthesizing, and evaluating. Descriptive statistical analysis revealed an overall mean score of 67.08, indicating a moderate level of literary reading ability. Students demonstrated the strongest performance in synthesizing and evaluating but showed the weakest performance in inferential reasoning, highlighting difficulties in constructing implicit meanings. Literary literacy levels ranged from basic comprehension to advanced evaluative reading, with most students clustered at the understanding and analytical levels. These findings suggest that literary literacy develops through non-linear cognitive processes shaped by the semantic complexity and interpretive demands of literary texts, underscoring the need for explicit instructional support to strengthen students' inferential and interpretive reading skills.

Abstract

Buying and selling interactions in traditional markets involve communication practices such as negotiation, persuasion, and social bonding where speakers do not always adhere to Grice’s Cooperative Principle. While research on Grice’s Cooperative Principle in such interactions is extensive, most studies focus on identifying instances of adherence to or violation of maxims without elucidating the pragmatic functions of these violations within the linguistically diverse socio cultural context of traditional markets. Therefore, this study aims to describe the forms of violations of Grice’s cooperative maxims and explain their pragmatic functions during buying and selling interactions at Rangkasbitung Market. A qualitative descriptive method with a pragmatic approach was employed. The data consisted of utterances from sellers and buyers containing violations of the cooperative maxims. Data collection involved observation specifically listening, nonparticipatory observation, recording, and note-taking while data analysis utilized the extralingual matching method, taking the utterance context into account. The results identified 26 violations of the cooperative maxims: 11 violations of the Maxim of Quantity, 4 of the Maxim of Quality, 2 of the Maxim of Relevance, and 9 of the Maxim of Manner. The findings reveal that maxim violations do not merely reflect communication ineffectiveness; rather, they serve as pragmatic strategies used by sellers and buyers to negotiate prices, persuade interlocutors, maintain bargaining positions, attract buyers' attention, and preserve social relationships during transactions. The novelty of this study lies in its explanation of the strategic functions of maxim violations within the buying and selling interactions at Rangkasbitung Market, which take place in a multilingual community using Indonesian, Sundanese, and a mixture of both. These findings extend the application of Grice’s Cooperative Principle to the context of local economic communication and imply that maxim violations should be understood as communication strategies influenced by interaction goals, social contexts, and culture rather than simply as deviations from conversational norms.
