Abstract

Studies on love and tolerance in Qur'anic interpretation have been dominated by the normative-theological perspectives of Middle Eastern exegetes, until now, which do not accommodate social-cultural contexts and local wisdom. This is because there has been little exploration of the dimensions of interpretation based on local wisdom that are relevant to the discourse of global harmony. This study aims to fill this gap through a comparative analysis of the thoughts of M. Quraish Shihab and Nasaruddin Umar. The method used is a literature study with a qualitative-comparative approach to the works of Quraish Shihab, Tafsir al-Mishbah, and Nasaruddin Umar, such as Deradikalisasi Pemahaman Al-Qur'an (Deradicalization of the Understanding of the Qur'an). The results show that Quraish Shihab and Nasaruddin Umar share the view that local values such as mutual cooperation and deliberation can serve as the foundation for global peace. The difference in their thinking is that Quraish Shihab emphasizes universal compassion and humanity, while Nasaruddin Umar emphasizes equality and plurality. Their thinking offers a model of contextual interpretation that is relevant to the contemporary world and contributes significantly to the development of peaceful, inclusive, and transformative Islamic studies. This study not only contributes to the understanding of Indonesian Qur’anic hermeneutics but also proposes an integrative model of contextual exegesis relevant to global ethical discourse

Abstract

The Rebo Wekasan tradition in the Sundoan community of Jember is a syncretic blend of religious rituals and local culture, believed to ward off disaster on the last Wednesday of the month of Safar. This study aims to examine how the core rituals of this tradition, particularly the provision and distribution of ketupat (rice cakes) and the performance of special sunnah prayers, serve as a means of internalizing the values of tolerance and togetherness within a diverse community. This research uses a qualitative case study approach, with triangulation techniques for data validation. Data analysis employs an interpretive-descriptive approach to understand the symbolic meaning and social function of these traditional practices. The practice of Rebo Wekasan in Sundoan, Jember, effectively fosters social values. The ritual of sharing ketupat (or ketupat to ward off disaster) serves as a unifying symbol that embodies togetherness (ukhuwah) as all residents share the same food, regardless of status or background. Furthermore, the collective voluntary prayers strengthen spiritual solidarity. Interestingly, the diversity of religious views on these prayers does not lead to conflict but is instead addressed through tolerance and mutual respect, embracing differences as a communal asset. The research results show that the Rebo Wekasan tradition effectively transforms individual beliefs about warding off disaster into collective social action. This is achieved through the ketupat symbol and the practice of communal sunnah prayers. This ritual serves a dual function: as an expression of religion and culture, as well as a social mechanism to maintain tolerance and strengthen togetherness (social cohesion) among residents in the Sundoan community of Jember

Abstract

Sufism, as the inner dimension of Islam, offers a spiritual path to universal peace and compassion. The Tarekat Shafa'i emphasizes the approach of love (mahabbah), simplicity (zuhd), and openness to socio-cultural diversity. This study uses a qualitative phenomenological method, with the aim to understanding the meaning of spiritual experience in depth. The research subjects consisted of mursyid thariqoh, caliphs, abdals, and active practitioners of the Tarekat Shafa'i in Sidoarjo, selected through purposive sampling. Data collection techniques included: in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out using phenomenological analysis (epoché-reduction–textural/structural description) in accordance with Husserl's phenomenological method. Inclusive Sufism in the Tarekat Shafa'i is a manifestation of Islamic spirituality that integrates universal Islamic values with local wisdom. Through an approach of love, tolerance, and balance, this order has built a peaceful and contextual model of religiosity

Abstract

This study aims to explain how the Qur’anic values of compassion (raḥmah) and tolerance (tasāmuḥ) can form an inclusive and civilized social ethic through a contextual interpretive approach. Employing Fazlur Rahman’s hermeneutical method, Jasser Auda’s systems-based maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, and Hans Küng’s global ethic, this research analyzes four key verses: QS al-Anbiyā’ [21]:107, al-Ḥujurāt [49]:13, al-Baqarah [2]:256, and al-Mumtaḥanah [60]:8–9. Classical exegesis (al-Ṭabarī and Ibn Kathīr) is compared with Nusantara exegesis represented by Hamka, Quraish Shihab, and Mahmud Yunus to identify the shift from theological interpretation toward social praxis. The findings show that Tafsir Nusantara articulates a contextual and transformative Qur’anic social ethic. Raḥmah emerges as a normative foundation for justice, equality, and respect for diversity, while tasāmuḥ affirms religious freedom and peaceful coexistence. The integration of Rahman’s, Auda’s, and Küng’s theoretical frameworks constructs a universal, humanistic, and globally oriented Qur’anic ethical paradigm. These results demonstrate that Nusantara-rooted interpretations have significant potential to actualize the principle of raḥmatan lil-‘ālamīn within plural societies and to strengthen a culture of religious moderation

Abstract

This study explores the Segoro Campurejo Market as a representation of coastal epistemology that reflects the social, economic, cultural, and educational dynamics of coastal communities. The purpose of this study is to reveal the meaning of the shell revolution as a symbol of transformation and to examine the practice of tolerance education in the market as a space for multicultural interaction. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach through field observations, interviews, and documentation, this study shows that the market functions not only as an economic center but also as an arena for art, culture, and local wisdom. Symbols such as boats and nets indicate a deep connection with the lives of fishermen, while shells as a medium of exchange revive historical and symbolic values. Furthermore, the market becomes a place for social gatherings that bridges differences in age, status, and culture, thereby fostering harmony and tolerance. In conclusion, Segoro Campurejo Market illustrates local-based social harmony that offers insights for global coexistence

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the possibilities of incorporating local knowledge, local culture and traditions, and norms, into the Indonesian National Sharia Council (DSN-MUI) fatwa making process. This study aims to assess the legal structure of the fatwas issued by DSN-MUI and examine the possibilities for them to be realigned within the socio-cultural setting of Indonesia. This research employed qualitative research with a normative-juridical approach combined with doctrinal analysis on the fatwas and socio-legal analysis to contextualize their applicability within Indonesian social reality. It analyzed the DSN-MUI fatwas particularly on Islamic economic transactions, local wisdom, and the legal doctrine of ‘urf as a source of Islamic law. The research results showed the DSN-MUI fatwas has been valuable for Islamic finance industry, yet, the need for further reorientation on the stated fatwas is necessary. The research result should be re-embedded, in legal construction, and community level applicability discussed on the need for the re-interpretation of the sources of Islamic law to institute wisdom of the community to be embraced in economic product. This paper argues the need for further integration to enhance Islamic economic law to be more contextual and localized. This integration, he argues, would be ultimately necessary

Abstract

This article explores the implementation of a "curriculum of love" (kurikulum cinta) in Islamic boarding schools (pondok pesantren) as a transformative model of humanist-religious education for the millennial generation. The study highlights how pesantren, as traditional yet dynamic Islamic educational institutions, integrate values of love, compassion, tolerance, and humanity into their curricula. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this study analyzes educational practices such as religious rituals, character formation, and social engagement programs that embed the values of rahmah (compassion) and mahabbah (love). The findings indicate that pesantren have successfully contextualized local wisdom and Islamic teachings to nurture inclusivity, empathy, and peace-building among students. This curriculum model not only strengthens students’ religious identity but also equips them with global humanist values necessary for navigating contemporary challenges. In conclusion, the "curriculum of love" in pesantren reflects an innovative synergy between tradition and modernity, offering a sustainable model of education for shaping tolerant, ethical, and globally aware Muslim youth

Abstract

This study explores the weaving tradition of Pelangwot Village, Lamongan, as a representation of self-control and tolerance within an Islamic socio-cultural framework. Employing an Islamic social ethnographic approach with a descriptive–interpretative paradigm, it aims to interpret the symbolic, moral, and spiritual meanings embedded in the weaving practice. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of cultural artifacts, and analyzed through thematic reduction, symbolic categorization, and reflective interpretation. The findings reveal that weaving is not merely an economic activity but also a spiritual discipline that cultivates the values of mujāhadah an-nafs (self-restraint), tasāmuh (tolerance), amānah (trustworthiness), and ihsān (excellence). The practice demonstrates the integration of work and worship, fostering an Islamic work ethic grounded in beauty, patience, and social responsibility. Despite digital transformation, the Pelangwot community maintains its spiritual integrity and collective ethos. In conclusion, the weaving tradition of Pelangwot embodies a form of living Islamic ethics—an expression of Islam rahmatan lil ‘alamin that harmonizes local productivity, spiritual consciousness, and global humanity
