Abstract

The Majapahit Kingdom was one of the largest Hindu-Buddhist empires in Southeast Asia, leaving behind numerous monumental legacies, including Kedaton Temple and the Sumur Upas Site in Trowulan, Mojokerto. These sites hold historical, archaeological, and spiritual significance, reflecting the acculturation between Hindu-Buddhist traditions and the emergence of Islam during the late Majapahit era. This study employs historiographical methods comprising heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography to explore the functions, meanings, and socio-religious dynamics surrounding the sites. Findings such as multilayered brick structures, foreign ceramics from China and Southeast Asia, ancient coins, and Islamic gravestones indicate that the area once served as a center of religious and social activity, marking the growing influence of Islam within Majapahit society. Local traditions, such as the Bari’an ritual and the use of sacred well water still preserved today demonstrate the embodiment of local wisdom in maintaining interfaith and intercultural harmony. This study highlights that the development of culture and Islam during the Majapahit period shared common values of harmony, forming an essential foundation for social cohesion and cultural pluralism in contemporary Indonesian society.

Abstract

The Kenduri Wiwit tradition is one of the Javanese forms of local wisdom that has been passed down through generations as an expression of gratitude for the harvest and harmonious life. In the current global context, cultural practices such as Kenduri Wiwit hold strategic value in fostering and strengthening universal human values. This study aims to analyze the symbolic meaning of Kenduri Wiwit as a form of local wisdom relevant to global harmony, as well as its role in nurturing love, gratitude, solidarity, and tolerance among communities. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using cultural ethnography methods, including participatory observation, in-depth interviews with community leaders, and literature studies on Javanese agrarian traditions. The findings indicate that Kenduri Wiwit functions not only as a religious and cultural ritual but also as a medium to strengthen social relationships, enhance solidarity across groups, and cultivate spiritual and ecological awareness. The values embedded in this tradition align with the principles of global harmony, including the cultivation of love, gratitude toward nature, tolerance, and togetherness in a plural society. In conclusion, Kenduri Wiwit can serve as a practical model of local wisdom that remains relevant for building and maintaining global harmony in contemporary society.

Abstract

This research discusses the Nyonteng Kolbuk Ritual, a tradition of caring for springs in Sumberwringin, Bondowoso, as a representation of harmony between humans, nature, and God, employing the semiotic approaches of Peirce and Barthes. This research aims to uncover the symbolic meaning of the signs in this ritual and to interpret the meaning of myths and ideological messages relevant to local cultural harmony and global relevance. The method of data collection involves observation, interview, and documentary research. Ritual symbols, such as water, goat's head offerings, a bridal couple, and agricultural products, are analyzed based on their iconic, indexical, symbolic, and ideological meanings. The results show that this ritual reflects local wisdom values such as ecological awareness, spirituality, social solidarity, and cultural preservation. Water symbolizes the purity and balance of the cosmos, the goat's head represents sacrifice and gratitude, and the bridal couple, along with the agricultural products, signify ecological justice. Abstract

This article examines Syi'îr Ngudi Susilo as a cultural text containing Javanese-Islamic moral values and its role in the glocalization of Islamic character education. Using Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutic method—naïve reading, structural analysis, and critical interpretation—the study reveals ethical values such as humility, manners, prayer discipline, Qur’an recitation, and respect for teachers as a synthesis of Javanese and Islamic teachings. These values form social capital through shared norms, beliefs, and networks in Javanese Muslim communities. Syi'îr Ngudi Susilo illustrates the integration of universal Islamic norms into local Javanese traditions, showing how character education is localized yet remains globally relevant. As traditional literature, it serves as a cultural medium of moral education while transmitting modern Islamic ideals in a local (Javanese-speaking) context. Through this synthesis, the syi’ir strengthens social capital and ensures the continuity of Javanese-Islamic moral teachings for younger generations.

Abstract

The development of religious and tolerant character from an early age is a strategic effort to instill Islamic values that are contextually and globally relevant. This study aims to explore the potential of Indonesian folktales as a medium for the internalization of Islamic values in strengthening the character of early childhood learners. The object of this study is the narrative content of selected folktales that reflect Islamic teachings and their implications for character education. The research method employed is library research with a content analysis approach applied to various literary sources, including traditional Indonesian folktales and relevant Islamic educational literature. The findings indicate that folktales such as Malin Kundang, Si Kabayan, and Lutung Kasarung convey moral messages that align with Islamic values, including obedience to parents, honesty, compassion, and tolerance. The novelty of this research lies in its integration of local wisdom and Islamic values within the framework of early childhood character education an area that remains underexplored in existing literature-based approaches. This distinguishes the study from prior research which tends to focus solely on general moral aspects without specific reference to Islamic teachings. The study concludes that folktales serve as an effective educational medium to harmonize local and global values in shaping a religious and tolerant character in young children.

Abstract

The Mepe Kasur tradition of the Osing community in Kemiren Village, Banyuwangi, is more than a cultural ritual before Eid al-Adha; it embodies values of tolerance, harmony, and economic empowerment. The symbolic red-black (abang-cemeng) mattresses reflect protection from misfortune and household unity, while the collective practice of airing mattresses and the Tumpeng Sewu ritual strengthen social cohesion across generations. Beyond its spiritual meaning, Mepe Kasur has become a cultural attraction that contributes to the local economy through tourism, homestays, culinary experiences, and creative industries. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method with participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and literature review. The findings reveal that the Mepe Kasur tradition serves two main functions: first, as a means of cultural preservation that safeguards the identity and spiritual values of the Osing community; and second, as an effective social instrument for strengthening interfaith tolerance and promoting community-based economic growth. This tradition fosters social interaction across religions and generations while creating economic opportunities through tourism activities and local cultural products. Thus, Mepe Kasur not only sustains social harmony but also acts as a driving force for a sustainable culture-based economy within the Osing community.

Abstract

This research addresses the global ecological crisis by proposing a new paradigm that integrates spiritual and social values to ensure cultural and environmental sustainability. The study analyzes the integration of Islamic ecotheological values and Sharia economic principles within the preservation of Reog Kendang, a local tradition in Tulungagung, Indonesia. Adopting a qualitative-interpretive method with an intrinsic case study design, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model, ensuring a rigorous interpretive depth. The findings reveal that the Reog Kendang community manifests spiritual-ecological values by fulfilling the role of khalifah fil ardh (steward of the earth) through collective prayer, the use of eco-friendly materials, and active nature conservation. Simultaneously, Sharia economic principles are reflected in the ethical management of communal funds, distributive justice, and blessing-based (barakah) social activities. The study concludes that this synthesis creates a model of Islamic ecocultural harmony that preserves indigenous culture, strengthens social solidarity, and supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This model serves as a strategic reference for developing a creative economy and cultural preservation framework rooted in Islamic ethical values. Abstract

Amidst global challenges, local wisdom offers authentic solutions for fostering harmony. This study aims to analyze the impact of the Omplong LAZISNU Program on the formation and strengthening of attitudes of love and tolerance within the community. Qualitative methods were used to collect data through interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis utilized an interactive model. Abstract

This study examines three philosophies of life among the Madurese people—Song Osong Lombhung, Mon Soghi-Pasoghe’, and Rampa’ Naong Bringin Korong—as models of local wisdom that reflect the values of love and tolerance in Islam. This study aims to reveal the philosophical meanings of these proverbs and their relevance to the principles of Islam Nusantara. The method employed is local hermeneutics with a qualitative-interpretative approach to interpret Madurese symbols, language, and cultural practices within their social context. The findings indicate that Song Osong Lombhung emphasizes family solidarity, Mon Soghi-Pasoghe’ fosters social responsibility, and Rampa’ Naong Bringin Korong describes universal harmony. Together, these three form a value structure ranging from micro-level solidarity to cosmic love, aligning with the concept of rahmatan lil ‘alamin. This study concludes that Madurese local wisdom can serve as a model of contextual Islamic praxis that reinforces moderation, compassion, and social tolerance in Indonesia.

Abstract

This research examines the Penjamasan Pusaka tradition in Aeng Tong Tong, Sumenep, as a sacred ritual that transcends the preservation of heirlooms to serve as a medium for identity reinforcement, social legitimacy, and communal harmony. The study specifically analyzes the construction, negotiation, and transmission of gender roles within the ritual’s power dynamics. Utilizing an ethnographic approach, data were gathered through participant observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews with traditional leaders, village officials, and ritual committees. The findings reveal a complex gender structure: while men dominate the public domain—leading processions and maintaining authoritative legitimacy—women occupy strategic spiritual, symbolic, and logistical roles essential to the ritual's continuity. These relations reflect a complementary pattern that fosters social cohesion, yet simultaneously reveals power asymmetries rooted in local patriarchal culture. The study concludes that Penjamasan Pusaka serves as a vital arena for gender representation where local wisdom facilitates social harmony. This traditional model remains highly relevant to global discourses on cultural sustainability, equality, and the preservation of indigenous heritage in a modernizing world.
