Abstract

Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is a restorative material with several advantages such as anti-cariogenic properties, biocompati-bility, and natural colour, but has the disadvantage of poor mechanical properties such as low fracture and brittleness. One ap-proach to overcome these drawbacks is to add hydroxyapatite (HA), which has high biocompatibility and a crystal structure simi-lar to human teeth and bone. Over the past few decades, technological developments have introduced materials that are suita-ble for use in various biomedical applications, especially in dentistry. Research shows that HA, extracted from various natural ma-terials, can improve the mechanical properties of GICs; it also retains unique properties such as fluoride release. Thus, the use of HA as an additive in GICs shows significant potential to improve the performance of these dental restorative materials.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of sugary drinks on the pH value of saliva in children, is an analytical observation with expe-rimental methods regarding the relationship of sugary drinks to the pH value of saliva measured using a pH meter. The research was conducted at RA Hudallah Kujangsari Village, Langensari Subdistrict, Banjar City. The results showed that before drinking sugary drinks, the majority of children had a normal pH category (64%), while after drinking sugary drinks, the pH state changed to be more acidic (70%) and only 22% had a normal pH category. It was concluded that after drinking sugary drinks, 78% expe-rienced a significant decrease in salivary pH, the rest had a normal pH.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that causes sufferers to be unable to regulate their blood sugar levels. Dental implant treatment causes the oral mucosa to become prone to inflammation. This condition has the potential to trigger disease at the site of implant placement such as peri-implantitis. This article examines the prevalence, mechanism, and management of peri-implantitis in patients with DM. Data were collected by literature searches on Pubmed, Science Direct and Cochrane Li-brary for articles published in 2017-2024, using the PRISMA method for systematic and literature reviews. Seven articles were synthesised through selection and filtering methods. The articles found all had a correlation with peri-implantitis, peri-implant di-sease and DM either through healing, micro organisms, and severity as well as potential treatment modalities. It was conclu-ded that there are several conditions that may have an association between DM and peri-implantitis and peri-implant disease.

Abstract

Puskesmas is a health service facility that organises first-level public and individual health efforts, by prioritising promotive and preventive efforts. Prevalence is part of an epidemiological study that refers to the number of individuals in the population who ex-perience a disease that is associated with the total population from which the cases originate. The study was conducted observa-tionally with a cross-sectional method. The variables studied were cases of gingivitis in 45 patients, namely gingivitis examination of 24 patients (53.3%) and 21 patients (46.7%) of men. The highest prevalence of gingivitis examination based on the age group 45-64 years as many as 21 cases (46.7%). It was concluded that the prevalence of gingivitis at UPTD Puskesmas Baturiti II Ta-banan in the period December 2023-January 2024 was 16.66%.

Abstract

This article evaluates the DASS-21 and SXI-ID questionnaires to assess the level of anxiety and xerostomia in the management of SAR. A 23-year-old male with ulcers surrounded by areas of erythema, accompanied by pain in the right buccal mucosa and left lateral tongue that had not been treated; also accompanied by discomfort and dryness in the oral cavity. Quantitative assess-sment in the form of the depression, anxiety, and stress scale (DASS-21) questionnaire was conducted four times during one month, determine the patient's state of dealing with heavy work. The diagnosis of xerostomia was established with the summated xerostomia inventory-Indonesian version (SXI-ID) questionnaire. Pharmacological therapy in the form of 0.2% hyaluronic acid mouthwash for 3 times 10 mL, as well as a behaviour modification approach. It was concluded that periodic evaluation using DASS-21 can identify behavioural changes related to the healing process of SAR. SXI-ID can be a psychometric instrument in patients with xerostomia. Behavioural management and symptomatic management play a role in SAR healing.

Abstract

To determine the description and prevalence of facial asymmetry and to determine the possible etiology of facial asymmetry in pre-clinical students of the Faculty of Dentistry, Hasanuddin University. This descriptive observational study, sampling was done by stratified random sampling method by taking extraoral photographs and giving questionnaires to respondents. The results show-ed the prevalence of facial asymmetry in the preclinical students was 70.59%, mostly found in female (54.9%). The most com-mon type of asymmetry was zygomatic asymmetry, with the most likely etiology being factors during development. It is concluded that the prevalence of facial asymmetry is quite large in a community or region with various types of asymmetry experienced which can be caused by several etiological factors.

Abstract

The most common temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is disc displacement with reduction (DDWR). Clicking as a characteristic symptom of DDWR requires conservative treatment such as occlusal splint. However, other accompanying symptoms such as pain in the masticatory muscles require additional treatment like physiotherapy. This paper aims to describe DDWR treatment using a stabilization splint and physiotherapy using infrared lamp therapy. A 33-year-old male came to the Prosthodontics Clinic with chief complaints that there is soreness on right jaw when he wakes up in the morning and was aware of it since a year ago. The patient has a habit of teeth grinding during sleep. Clinical examination, a sound on the right and left jaw joint when opening and closing the mouth, mouth opening without pain of 50.5 mm with deviation to the right, pain in the muscles around the face, especially the masseter, temporalis and trapezius. Radiograph shows the position of the right and left mandibular condyles an-terior to the articular tubercle. A stabilizing splint is used for symptomatic treatment and physiotherapy is carried out in the form of infrared lamp therapy. It is concluded that the combination of stabilizing splint and infrared lamp therapy can reduce pain and clicking in TMD’s patients.

Abstract

Dental caries lesions in children can have a significant impact on quality of life. According to WHO, QoL is a perception that comes from individuals consisting of functional abilities, interaction in society, psychological health, physical health, and life satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between dental caries lesion status and quality of life in children aged 10-12 years at SDN 196 Sukarasa, Bandung City. Analytic observational descriptive research, with a cross-sectional study de-sign. Hypothesis testing was carried out using the Spearman Rank test. The results showed a mean DMF-T index value of 0.3 with low caries status (100%). The mean value of the def-t index was 2.1 with low (68%), medium (19%), and high (13%) caries sta-tus. There is a relationship between dental caries lesion status and quality of life in children. Statistically the correlation between the two is significant because it has a probability value of 0.000 (Sig.<0.05). The lower the score of the child's dental caries lesion sta-tus, the better the child's quality of life. It is concluded that dental caries lesion status can affect children's quality of life.
