Abstract

This study aims to analyze the Oedipus complex and the hyperactivity symptoms displayed by the protagonist in the movie 'Mommy'. The research problem is that there has been limited psychological analysis of the potential presence of the Oedipus complex and hyperactivity disorder in fictional characters in films. This gap in research warrants a thorough examination of the protagonist in 'Mommy' to gain deeper insight into the depicted psychological intricacies. Qualitative methodology is used, applying Freud's psychoanalytic theory and Russell Barkley's ADHD theory to analyze dialogues and scene depictions from the film. By systematically identifying and categorizing data pertinent to Oedipus complex and hyperactivity symptoms, conclusions are drawn from the findings. The film's protagonist displays symptoms of Oedipus complex, such as seeking excessive attention from their mother, feeling jealousy towards their mother's romantic partner, engaging in inappropriate physical contact, showing anxiety about maternal separation, and developing affection for an older maternal acquaintance. Furthermore, hyperactivity symptoms manifest with excessive speech, heightened motor activity, and intentional agitation of others. This analysis indicates that the film's main character displays signs of the Oedipus complex and hyperactivity disorder. This thorough examination fills the research gap and allows for a more profound comprehension of the psychological intricacies portrayed in the protagonist.

Abstract

Vocabulary is crucial for effective communication, especially in the global context where English is an essential international language. However, English proficiency at one of the state junior high schools in Perak Jombang, East Java, remains low. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of the Scrabble game in improving vocabulary mastery in class VII-I in one of the state junior high schools at Perak Jombang, East Java. This research used a pre-experimental design with a sample of twenty-five students. Data collection included pre-test and post-test assessments, analyzed using the Sample Paired t-test formula with a significance level of 0.05 (α=5%). The results revealed a two-tailed significance value (sig.) of 0.000, which is less than 0.05. ttable calculation at significance alpha= 5% is 2.063 while the tcount 4.203 (tcount > ttable). This indicates that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. These findings demonstrate that the Scrabble game effectively enhances students' vocabulary mastery. It is hoped that this research can serve as a reference for other researchers to explore using Scrabble to improve vocabulary among junior high school students.

Abstract

Bangka Island has several kinds of tourist attractions, such as natural tourism, historical tourism, cultural tourism and artificial tourism. The names of tourist attractions on Bangka Island still follow the names of the areas where the tourist attractions are located. Unfortunately, many local residents do not acknowledge the origins and meanings of the names of these tourist attractions. There is a need for an in-depth study regarding the naming of tourist attractions on Bangka Island to increase public awareness and the body of knowledge that needs to be preserved to increase tourism potential on Bangka Island. Research on the toponymy of tourist attractions on the island of Bangka uses ethnosemantic methods, and the results are described qualitatively. Ten tourist attractions were selected by random sampling based on the availability of information in the community. From the results of this research, it can be concluded that the names of tourist attractions on Bangka Island consist of three aspects, namely the linguistic aspect, both generic and specific, and the historical aspect of the formation and dynamics of society in the area.

Abstract

As essential knowledge tools, books appeal to a broad audience, including children, teenagers, and parents, with Bedtime Stories particularly captivating for children at night. This study examines the sociolinguistic characteristics of Bedtime Stories, emphasizing the variety of language styles used by authors to engage a child's imagination. Analyzing children's stories from online sources, focusing on five selected narratives, the researchers reveal a range of language styles - formal, informal, casual, and colloquial - with conversational style being the most prevalent. Additionally, this study identifies diverse language functions, including expressive, directive, referential, and phatic, with a significant emphasis on expressive functions. These insights extend our understanding of language use in bedtime stories and suggest directions for future research. Further studies should explore a broader and more varied sample, utilizing qualitative and quantitative methods, deepening our grasp of language styles in children's literature, particularly in the digital era. This exploration is crucial for comprehending how adaptable and diverse language styles can effectively engage children globally, fostering their cognitive and emotional development in our interconnected world.
