Abstract

Vocabulary is essential for students learning English since they can comprehend texts in English more easily once their vocabulary improves. Some teachers in schools continue to use conventional approaches to learning vocabulary, such as distributing textbooks and providing no multimedia resources in the learning environment. These conventional situations bring boredom and a lack of enthusiasm to learners. This study explores the use of spinning wheel media in vocabulary classrooms in one of Jember's private junior high schools. The current study used a qualitative approach, with data gathered through observation, interviews, and document review. The results demonstrated that the spinning wheel media could be used in vocabulary classrooms since it can engage learners, boost their enthusiasm, and improve their vocabulary. Furthermore, the teacher's notes and evaluation showed that this game fosters an engaging and interactive classroom environment.

Abstract

The film is the favorite literary work teachers adopt to teach students character education. The Sang Prawira movie (2019) contains an educational character message and motivation to reach the dreams of society, especially the young generation. The study of character education representation based on Thomas Lickona's theory has yet to be investigated by previous studies. This study aims to investigate the character education representation based on Thomas Lickona's theory that is strongly represented in Sang Prawira's movie. This study uses the qualitative method using the theory of character education by Thomas Lickona. Based on the study, the researcher found the representation of character education, such as drug education as the moral principle, fortitude in fighting for kindness, positive attitude through hope and support, humility in admitting mistakes, wisdom through the ability to make decisions, loving to god almighty and all humans, hard work to achieve the dreams, the integrity recognition as ethical consistency, the gratitude by realizing obligation, justice in recognizing the responsibilities. In conclusion, the representation of the educational character in this film should be obtained by many Indonesian students because it becomes an example and guideline for them to implement good moral knowledge, behavior, and feeling in broader society.

Abstract

Phrasal verbs pose challenges for interpretation due to unpredictable meanings. This study examined how image schemas aid comprehension from linguistic and philosophical viewpoints. A literature review methodology integrated insights from cognitive linguistics, philosophy of language, and related fields to provide a comprehensive understanding. Linguistically, image schemas offer a cognitive framework for processing phrasal verbs by mapping meanings to embodied experiences. Philosophically, schemas reflect how language emerges from and shapes conceptualization. Comparative analysis showed linguistics emphasizes schemas' mental role in comprehension, while philosophy explores their existential significance. Results identified schemas like CONTAINER and PATH that extend metaphorically from physical interactions to abstract phrasal verb meanings. Linguistically, schemas provide a framework for analyzing structures and meanings. Philosophically, schemas reflect language's emergence from embodiment and influence on thought. Teaching implications were to connect phrasal verbs to familiar embodied experiences through schemas. Theoretical implications were that schemas are fundamental to thought and linguistic expressions. By synthesizing perspectives, this study enhanced understanding of the intricate cognitive mechanisms linking schemas to phrasal verbs. It highlighted implications for language education and advances in interdisciplinary inquiry into embodied cognition and communication.

Abstract

This article studies the construction of Orientalism in the novel The Grass is Singing by Doris Lessing. Doris Lessing is a British writer born in Persia who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2007. As a white writer, Lessing is known as a writer who fights for the rights of the black community. Still, in this novel, she sharpens the negative image of the blacks as described in the theory of Orientalism. Orientalism focuses on the West’s view of the East. In the novel, Orientalism was carried out by The West against The East, represented by Mary Turner as white people and Moses as the black. This study aims to dismantle the Orientalist discourse in the novel. The study applied the theory of Orientalism proposed by Edward Said (1979). The Orientalist discourse in The Grass is Singing is constructed in the form of stereotypes and oppression against the black people in Southern Rhodesia. Racism, colonialism, and the politics of Apartheid done by white people in the novel showcase the white superiority toward the inferior black.

Abstract

This paper exposes power relations of governmentality in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s short story “One of These Days”. Marquez’s story tells about asymmetric relations between a dentist and his city’s Mayor. The writing must be analyzed through Michel Foucault’s concept of governmentality, in which power is rationalized in shaping disciplines and anti-resistance. Through the qualitative method, this article explores the accentuations of governmentality in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “One of These Days”. Throughout the close reading as the technique of collecting data and content analysis as the technique of data analysis, the analysis includes what the city Mayor does in governmentality as forceful power against the dentist. Governmentality is seen in how corrupt behaviour affects subordinate people by implementing power and discipline. In conclusion, governmentality plays a significant role in Marquez’s story since it shows how power is not static but grows through the abusive behaviour of the subject’s power through the discipline of the object.

Abstract

Effective English language teaching demands proficient teachers, as pre-service teachers in the English Education department must possess strong English proficiency to teach effectively. This study investigates the perceptions of metacognitive awareness among pre-service EFL teachers in an Indonesian context. Quantitative data were collected using Balcikanli’s Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI), and qualitative data were gathered through semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal that pre-service teachers in the English Language Education department display varying levels of metacognitive awareness, which impacts their ability to effectively teach English. 60% of participants have a moderate perception of their metacognitive awareness, while 40% exhibit a high level. Key aspects of metacognition, including declarative, procedural, and conditional knowledge, as well as regulation of cognition through planning, monitoring, and evaluating, were examined. It highlighted that the pre-service teachers are generally aware of their learning strengths and weaknesses but face challenges in regulating learning effectively. The study contributes to the field of English language learning and teaching by emphasizing the role of metacognitive awareness in achieving successful language acquisition and suggests that ongoing support and training are essential for pre-service teachers to become effective educators.

Abstract

Humans who have complete freedom tend to feel confused about the choices that exist. They will be confused about what is right and what is not because of the amount of freedom. The song M. I. A. by Avenged Sevenfold tells the story of a soldier who feels confused about his choice when he goes to war. He hopes that what he chooses and does is the right thing, but it is more complex than that. So, how is the Paradox of Freedom reflected in Avenged Sevenfold’s M. I. A.? The analysis involves tensional matters between ‘freedom of’ and ‘freedom to’ in the song through qualitative method. Through the theory of positive and negative freedom by Charles Taylor, people are pushed always to choose positive liberty, but the reality is always negative. It is reflected in this song when goodness never reflects such freedom. Such realization of freedom may also hinder others’ freedom. In conclusion, the paradox of freedom in the song is reflected through the complexities of choices that will emerge one freedom but eliminate another.

Abstract

Burmese Days is a novel by George Orwell, inspired by his experiences as a police officer in Burma. At that time, Burma was under British colonial rule, which led to the belief that local people were inferior to British people. This research aims to show how George Orwell depicts one of the characters, Ellis, with a sense of superiority and racism based on paternalism. The research uses a qualitative descriptive method, using Edward Said’s theory of Orientalism as the primary source to understand how the West defines the East. Orientalism is a way to understand the East based on the experiences and knowledge of Europeans. This research aims to discover the sense of paternalism in the novel and how paternalism caused racism and superiority. The researchers found that the arrival of the British to Burmese made Ellis think that local people could not govern themselves. He felt that local people were destined to be enslaved, and this sense of colonialist paternalism caused racism and superiority to emerge in him. Ellis firmly refused to accept local people into the club by raising the issue of racism and the superiority of British people over local people.

Abstract

Language style has an important role because interaction cannot go ahead if one does not speak the right style according to the situation. Furthermore, sometimes, there are still errors in language that are not adapted to situations when communicating in everyday life. This research aims to discover the types and functions of the language styles used in Elon Musk’s speech. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The object of this research is Elon Musk’s speech in the form of a transcript of a video from the YouTube channel entitled English Speech | Elon Musk: Future, A.I. and Mars (English Subtitles), which was released in 2018. The result shows that three types of language styles have been found: casual, consultative, and formal. Six functions have been found in this speech: referential, directive, expressive, phatic or social, poetic, and metalinguistic functions. Learning language style is very important as people can communicate with others according to where and with whom they speak so that the listener quickly understands the conversation.

Abstract

The concepts of EFL learners’ perceptions of online learning in current literature were generated by research conducted before and amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the different status of online learning post-COVID-19, these concepts might have been unfashionable. This explanatory sequential mixed methods study aimed to uncover pre-service EFL teachers’ perceptions of asynchronous online learning (AOL) and synchronous online learning (SOL) post-COVID-19 pandemic to fill in the gap. Involving 34 pre-service EFL teachers at Universitas Kristen Indonesia, data were collected and triangulated using a survey and a semi-structured interview. The results revealed that the participants had positive perceptions of AOL and SOL. However, their perception of AOL was higher in terms of engagement, interaction, collaboration, and advantages than that of SOL. The latter was higher only in social presence, indicating the AOL’s superiority over SOL. The participants also believed that, if designed well and supported by high-quality tools, an internet connection, and bandwidth, both AOL and SOL can facilitate a robust learning environment for EFL learning and teaching. Thus, future research should focus on instructional designs of both AOL and SOL (or their combination) that can optimize their power for delivering learning materials and experiences.
