Abstract

This study investigates the use of hedging maxim of quality and quantity in the Bahasa Inggris Kelas XI Kurikulum 13 textbook. The research method employed is descriptive qualitative, where researchers analyze the contents of the book to identify hedge maxims. The findings reveal the presence of hedges in the maxim of quality and quantity throughout the book. Hedges of maxim quality are used by speakers who are unsure about the information they convey, while hedges of maxim quantity are used by speakers who acknowledge limited information on a topic. The finding results there are 14 types of hedging maxims of quality and 11 types of hedging maxims of quantity in the Bahasa Inggris Kelas XI Kurikulum 13 textbook. The use of hedges in this textbook aligns with Grice's maxims of conversation, specifically the maxims of quality and quantity. This analysis can help educators understand how linguistic features are used in educational contexts to enhance the effectiveness of teaching materials.

Abstract

Children's storybooks play a crucial role in children's language development, thus demanding meticulous attention from authors in word selection and usage within the narrative. A comprehensive understanding of the morphological processes, particularly affixation, is essential for grasping the writing style. This study focuses on scrutinizing the morphological processes, particularly affixation, specifically the prefix ‘ber-’, on verbs. The analysis centers on the fundamental form and semantic formation. The dataset comprises all verbs prefixed with ber- sourced from a children's storybook titled "Cerita Negeri Tetangga: Kumpulan Dongeng Asia Tenggara" by Hapsari Hanggarini. The research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach to present the data. The findings reveal four fundamental forms of verbs with the prefix ‘ber-’and seven semantic formations. The prevalent fundamental form constitutes free morphemes, with the dominant semantic formation reflecting active actions. These findings suggest that affixation processes in children's storybooks tend to remain straightforward, catering to concepts accessible to children.

Abstract

Verbs are one of the main linguistic elements in sentence structures that explain actions, states, or processes. In academic writing, verbs are important in describing concepts and research processes. This research aims to determine the collocation construction of denominal verbs with the affix {-ise} in English academic texts in terms of grammatical collocation patterns and verb meaning categories. This research uses semantic studies with collocation theory (Benson et al., 2010) and verb meaning category theory (Gottfurcht, 2008; Plag, 2002). This research is qualitative research with data in the form of denominal verb lingual units sourced from the British Academic Written English (BAWE) corpus. The methods of data collection are the observing and selection method by using the AntConc corpus tool. The results show that denominal verbs with the {-ise} affix tend to be accompanied by objects in terms of their collocation patterns so that the verbs can be said dominantly to be transitive. On the other hand, the meaning categories of denominal verbs with the affix {-ise} from the context relationship between verbs and collocates produce five categories, including resultative, ornative, locative, causative, and performative.

Abstract

This study explores the symbolism of water in the Gospel of John, revealing its role in disclosing Jesus’ identity and message. Through word study, literature analysis, and qualitative methods, the research examines narratives involving the term “water”, incorporating insights from Jewish and Christian traditions. The findings suggest that water symbolizes the Holy Spirit, rebirth, new life, and other spiritual meanings within the Fourth Gospel. This analysis offers valuable insights for readers interested in the symbolic use of water in John’s Gospel and provides believers with a deeper understanding of its theological significance. By examining how water serves as a profound narrative device, the study illustrates how the Gospel of John employs this element to bridge the literal and the spiritual, emphasizing the essence of Jesus’ mission and the transformative power of faith. This research contributes to the broader understanding of Johannine symbolism, highlighting the intricate ways in which simple elements like water can convey complex theological themes and spiritual truths.

A study on the representation of stereotypes in A.A. Mille's poem In the Fashion explores Riffaterre's semiotic theory. It exposes explanation of the way stereotype operating in children’s perspective on having jealousy or envy. This poem mostly explores the stereotype of having attractive particular part of body creating opposition, questions, contradiction, and marginalization. This study using qualitative data analysis applied Riffaterre's semiotic theory on poetry (Riffaterre, 1978). The stages of reading, heuristic and hermeneutic readings, would be the steps to do this analysis. The study resulted Milne recently emphasized the tail as part of animal body which has its particular fine quality that the quality of the tail heuristically is exposed and pointed at. The exposure of its quality is done by relating all lines in the poem with the existence and concern of the tail itself. And, Milne exposed, as the hypogram, those as means of learning children about mirroring activities as an effect of stereotyping which is perceived as the representation of what most children have recently seen from the oppositions, contradiction, similarity, and marginalisation.

Abstract

This study explores Cheap Chewsday as a medium of gastrodiplomacy aimed at introducing Indonesian cuisine and culture to the Australian public. Through the participation of Indonesian students in Newcastle, this event serves as a platform to present traditional Indonesian dishes while fostering deep cross-cultural understanding. The findings indicate that Cheap Chewsday successfully attracts local participants interested in exploring the flavors and cultural significance behind Indonesian cuisine. Nevertheless, Indonesian students face challenges in adapting dishes to local preferences, such as modifying spice levels and incorporating accessible ingredients. Positive responses from local participants regarding the uniqueness of Indonesian cuisine suggest that this event effectively facilitates meaningful cultural interactions, enriching cultural awareness between the two communities. Additionally, Cheap Chewsday strengthens the cultural identity of Indonesian students, reinforcing their role as cultural ambassadors in promoting Indonesia abroad. This study concludes that Cheap Chewsday not only introduces Indonesian culinary heritage but also holds potential as a sustainable cultural diplomacy initiative, fostering appreciation of Indonesia’s rich culture among the Australian community.

Abstract

This study aims to study the phonological variation between Temanggung and Banyumas dialects of Javanese, focusing on vowel and consonant sound changes and phonemic processes that occur in speech. Through a qualitative descriptive approach, data was collected using observation, recording, and direct data collection methods from daily conversations as well as a Swadesh vocabulary list that includes 450 words. The results showed significant variations in the pronunciation of vowel sounds, such as the change of vowel /ͻ/ to /a/, vowel /e/ to /a/, vowel /a/ to /e/, and the variation of vowel /o/ to /u/. In addition, phoneme addition phenomena such as paragogue and prothesis, phoneme reduction (affresis), as well as vowel phoneme substitution are identified as distinctive characteristics of both dialects. These findings emphasize the importance of understanding dialectal variation in the context of phonology, as well as its implications for language teaching and local culture preservation.

Data collection involves a total of 20 participants aged from 19 to 63 years who attended six to seven online sessions conducted by postgraduate students in their third semester, with a quantitative research method. Participants were assessed for their experience and hardships via a questionnaire regarding how they were challenged by the learning setting out alongside pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, cultural barriers, and lack of time practicing. It came out that out of the challenges the students encountered vocabulary and averages were the most fundamental problems together with pronunciation, grammar, cultural differences, and insufficient time to practice speaking. This is consistent with the literature on the subject of cultural and psychological variables working in combination with linguistic factors learning in a virtual environment. The conclusion reached in the study is that to deal with the above problems better teaching strategies such as the use of technology, culture, and practice are needed.
