Abstract

This study explores the advantages of critical reading strategies in the development of undergraduate thesis proposals. Using a qualitative research approach, six undergraduate students from a university in Surabaya were interviewed to gather insights into their experiences. The findings reveal that critical reading strategies play a significant role in supporting students throughout the thesis proposal writing process. Participants reported that these strategies help them understand and evaluate articles for use as sources, sort relevant citations, formulate hypotheses, and draft well-structured proposals. Additionally, critical reading strategies assist students in avoiding plagiarism, compiling literature reviews, drafting the background of the study, and identifying research gaps and questions. Students also noted that employing these strategies enhanced the quality of their proposals, making their work more efficient and effective. These findings highlight the importance of critical reading strategies in academic writing and suggest their potential for improving students’ overall research competencies.

Abstract

The rapid development of the industrial revolution has brought about rapid changes in the world of education. The systems and subsystems in the field of education also adapt to these developments following the dynamics of changes in world technology. The most specific thing is in education at all levels of formal education in Indonesia, more specifically in learning Indonesian. The most important element in achieving optimal learning in Indonesian language subjects depends on the capacity of teachers or educators in transferring Indonesian language knowledge. The substance of Indonesian language subjects is mapped into two components, namely language and literature. Teachers in the 5.0 era must be very able to adapt to matters related to technological developments. Some technological components that are very important for Indonesian language teachers to learn are the use of LMS (learning management systems), learning applications, the use of social media to share information and collaborate, and the use of teaching aids whose purpose is to increase the effectiveness of learning. However, apart from that, in essence Indonesian language teachers must have a solid understanding of the nature of Indonesian language learning in the context of its learning, the nature of language proficiency, the nature of language skills, and an understanding of strategies for fostering the acquisition of Indonesian as a second language in the classroom.

Abstract

German is widely taught as a foreign language (DaF; Deutsch als Fremdsprache) in Indonesia. However, observations during German language instruction at Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) have revealed that writing skills pose a significant challenge for many learners. Preliminary observations suggest that diverse language proficiency levels is a primary contributing factor to this challenge. Notably, a substantial portion of German Education students at UNESA did not have prior German language course’s exposure in high school. In light of these observations, the present study underscores the urgency of implementing Binnendifferenzierung, a differentiated instruction approach, to address the diverse skill levels among learners. This qualitative descriptive research aims to describe the implementation of Binnendifferenzierung—differentiation learning—in the "Thematisches Schreiben" (Thematic writing) course. The study employed one form of differentiation: Differenzierung nach Aufgaben (task differentiation). Differenzierung nach Aufgaben involved introducing two variations of writing exercises at the A2 level: Aufgabe A. These variations included (a) vocabulary enrichment exercises, (b) guided writing with keywords, (c) serial writing based on cartoon images, and (d) free-theme writing. Differenzierung nach Sozialformen involved differentiating the teaching methods based on learners' preferences and learning styles. The findings of the study demonstrate that the implementation of Binnendifferenzierung in both forms effectively accommodated the heterogeneity of learners and provided opportunities for individualized learning tailored to their interests and abilities. This approach also introduced variations that aligned with the diverse needs of the learners.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to develop a corpus method specifically for learning and teaching German for B1 level grammar courses for German students. This research uses a corpus-based development method by Scherer [9] with several phases, namely: collecting corpus data, inputting data in the corpus tool, reading data in the corpus tool, validation of data and using the corpus for teaching of German grammar (Grammatik). Grammatik is the knowledge of grammar or the rules used in writing and speaking German. This field has many rules and German students, especially in the German Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Languages and Arts, Universitas Negeri Medan, often face difficulties in the process of understanding grammar, so a method is needed, namely the Corpus method, to study German grammar.

Abstract

Aphasia, a complex communication disorder resulting from brain damage, causes difficulties in understanding and using language. The phenomenon of bilingual aphasia is challenging due to its complexity in understanding and rehabilitating language disorders. In the globalization era, the dual-speaking population's growth is increasing. However, our understanding of bilingual aphasia is still limited. Therefore, in-depth and systematic research is needed to guide bilingual aphasia's diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. This study used a rigorous literature review method, with a thematic search and analysis of relevant studies on bilingual aphasia. Symptom profiles, risk factors, pathophysiology, and rehabilitation strategies were comprehensively reviewed. The thematic analysis of the literature revealed diverse symptom profiles in individuals with bilingual aphasia and associated risk factors and pathophysiological mechanisms. In addition, this study examined effective rehabilitation strategies appropriate to the characteristics of bilingual aphasia. This research has important implications in neurolinguistics and aphasiology, improving the accuracy of diagnosis, development of appropriate interventions, and effective rehabilitation planning. The results make valuable contributions to clinical practitioners, researchers, and educators in providing better care and support for individuals with bilingual aphasia. In addition, this study also enriches our understanding of the complexity of language and the brain-language connection at large.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the distribution pattern of the words "laki-laki" and "pria" in three types of discourse, namely news discourse, website discourse, and Wikipedia discourse uploaded on the internet. In addition, this study also aims to look at the semantic prosody or positive, negative, or neutral tendencies of the words collocated with the words "laki-laki" and "pria". This research uses a combined research method (mix method). To find out the distribution pattern of the use of the words “laki-laki” and “pria”, this study uses data sources from LCC Indonesian 2023 (Leipzig Corpora Collection) and uses the CQPWeb corpus analysis instrument, and is analysed with the theoretical approach of semantic prosody. The results show that in the three types of discourse uploaded on the internet, the word "pria" is used more than the word "laki-laki". Then, the words "laki-laki" and "pria" have close collocation with the words "lain", “tua”, “muda”, and "dewasa". The results also show that the words "laki-laki" and "pria" in the collection of discourses uploaded on the internet have similar collocation behaviour and have positive semantic prosody.

Abstract

This study examines the narrative strategies used by Generation Z in writing short stories in the era of digital literacy. The research method used is a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis of the collection of short stories Warna Merdeka Kala Korona consisting of 47 short stories published by the Banyuwangi Literacy Community. Data were analyzed using Minderop's (2011) storytelling strategy theory, which includes telling and showing techniques, as well as the influence of digital technology on narrative patterns. The results of the study show that changes in narrative structure in Generation Z short stories reflect adaptation to digital technology, with a dominance of non-linear plots, exploration of social themes, and active involvement of readers in interpreting the story. Generation Z shows a strong tendency to use an indirect storytelling style (showing), which develops characters and conflicts through actions, dialogues, and responses to problems without explicit narrative from the author. This study shows that technological developments have strengthened Generation Z's preference for reflective and interactive storytelling. This study contributes to the study of digital literacy and opens up opportunities for further research related to cultural factors and individual preferences in shaping Generation Z's storytelling strategies.

Abstract

This study aims to explore students’ perspectives to the TOEFL training program conducted at an Islamic boarding school in Mojokerto, using a descriptive qualitative approach. The study involves six student participants and two teachers to provide a comprehensive understanding of the program's reception and effectiveness. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis, guided by Kirkpatrick's reaction theory, which emphasizes participants' perceptions of a training program in terms of satisfaction, engagement, and relevance to their needs. Findings reveal that students generally perceive the program as beneficial for enhancing their English proficiency, particularly in listening and reading skills, which are crucial components of the TOEFL test. Positive reactions include appreciation for the program's interactive teaching methods, clear instructions, and supportive learning environment. However, challenges such as limited time allocation, inadequate materials, and difficulty in grasping complex grammar topics were also identified. Teachers noted an improvement in students’ confidence and motivation, but they also highlighted the need for more comprehensive resources and additional training sessions to ensure better outcomes.

Abstract

Abstract This research is aimed to explore the practice of Differentiated Reading Assessment (DRA) in the classroom implementation conducted by PPG (Pendidikan Profesi Guru) (Pre-Service Teacher-Professional Education) graduates in Indonesian junior high schools along with their applied classroom strategies and encountered problems. A qualitative case study was employed in data collection from class observations, lesson plan examination and semi-structured interviews. Results indicate four large strategies teachers used to develop these practices: flexible grouping, choice of text and response modality, tactics for multimodal and culturally responsive assessments, and formative feedback. However, such pedagogical strategies were hampered by systemic and institutional barriers such as time pressure, resource shortage, deficit of assessment literacy and policy drivers focused on standardized testing. The study calls for systemic reform which includes improved teacher training, greater curricular flexibility, funding for instructional materials, and supportive administrative leadership. These changes are necessary to ensure sustainable DRA application and to create more equal and inclusive classrooms across Indonesian schools. Keywords: Differentiated assessment, reading instruction, PPG graduates, assessment literacy.
