Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to analyze the kinship between Javanese (BJ), Batak (BT), and Balinese (BB) languages through a comparative historical linguistic approach. These three languages are part of the Austronesian family but have developed in geographically and culturally distinct regions. The research focused on determining the percentage of kinship, the divergence time of the languages, and the presence of cognate vocabulary in the languages. The results show that despite significant differences due to historical and cultural divergence, a number of lexical forms and morphological structures were found, indicating traces of a common origin in Proto-Austronesian. Based on this research, it was also found that (1) Batak language retains its proto-form more than Javanese and Balinese languages. (2) Javanese and Batak languages belong to the same language family, sharing a kinship percentage of 22%. Based on calculations, the two languages diverged between 1305-1985 BC. This study found three types of phonemic correspondences: /i~e/, /ǝ~ɔ/, and /w~b/. Phonetic similarities were also found between the vowels [U~u] and [I~i]. (3) Javanese and Balinese languages belong to the same family, sharing a kinship percentage of 37%. Based on glottochronological calculations, it was found that the two languages diverged between 185-525 BC. In this study, phonemic correspondences were found between the phonemes /ɔ~ǝ/ and /ɔ~a/. (4) Balinese and Batak languages belong to the same language family, sharing a kinship percentage of 26%. Based on the calculations, the two languages diverged between 975-1031 BC. This study found one phonemic correspondence /r~h/. Key Words: Javanese Language, Batak Language, Balinese Language, Comparative Historical Linguistics, Austronesian

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the meaning of home in the short story Rumah-Rumah Nayla by Djenar Maesa Ayu through Bakhtin's narratological perspective, particularly the concepts of dialogism and polyphony. The story represents home not merely as a physical dwelling, but as a space layered with voices, experiences, and meanings that often clash with each other. This study is qualitative research using narrative analysis to explore the various voices and consciousnesses of its characters, such as Nayla as a victim, wife, mother, and writer, as well as the voices of her husband and children. The results show that each voice in the story stands side by side without any single voice dominating. The interaction and collision among these voices create a complex and dynamic dialogic space where the meaning of home becomes fluid, open, and continuously shaped by each character’s personal experience. Thus, the story affirms that the meaning of home is dialogic and never singular, but always open to new interpretations in accordance with each individual’s experience.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the construction of women in the reporting of sexual violence in the media Kompas.com and Detik.com. The dismantling of the construction of women as victims is carried out by analyzing news discourse using Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis theory. The data collection method and technique used is the listening method with basic tapping techniques. The data analysis method and technique uses the matching method and the distribution method. The matching method uses the basic technique of Sorting Determining Elements (PUP) with the advanced techniques of Connecting Appeals to Equalize (HBS) and Connecting Appeals to Differentiate (HBB). In addition, data analysis is also supported by the application of Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis approach, including the stages of description, interpretation, and explanation. Through the data analysis, it is known that both media construct women as victims, weak, powerless, vulnerable to deception, trapped in power relations, but brave to fight back at the same time. Both media also have a tendency to protect the perpetrator by giving the initials of the name, not only the victim who is protected. In terms of text consumption, it shows that most readers condemned the perpetrator's actions, but one Kompas.com reader sexually objectified the victim's body. From a sociocultural perspective, several phenomena are related to the media's construction of women in cases of sexual violence. These phenomena include revenge porn, marital rape, unequal power relations, the practice of marrying rape victims to their perpetrators, and beauty privilege for women. Key Words: critical discourse analysis, Norman Fairclough, women, sexual violence, Kompas.com, Detik.com

Abstract

Ecocritical studies in popular media are becoming more and more pertinent due to the pressing need to address environmental challenges and the changing dynamic between technology and nature. This essay uses Greg Garrard's theoretical framework to examine how identity and belonging are portrayed in Chris Sanders's animated feature The Wild Robot (2024) from an ecocritical perspective. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach, the study gathers information by watching the movie and literature review several times in a methodical manner and concentrating on significant moments, conversations, and visual components that illustrate how technology (Roz) and nature interact. The results show that by showing Roz's journey from an outsider to a caring member of the ecosystem, the movie subverts the traditional lines separating the natural from the artificial, fostering ecological empathy and awareness. By showing how animated films may promote fresh viewpoints on environmental stewardship and peaceful cohabitation between technology and nature, this study advances ecocritical theory. Incorporating ecocritical narratives into educational and cultural discourse can improve public knowledge of ecological challenges, according to the study's conclusion, which also offers suggestions for more interdisciplinary research.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of Easy German videos as a supporting medium in learning German recipe writing in the German Literature Study Program at Surabaya State University. As a YouTube channel providing authentic German language learning materials, Easy German videos showcase everyday life in Germany through actors using communicative language, gestures, and facial expressions, thereby helping students understand German grammar, vocabulary, and cultural context while practicing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Students' ability to write German recipes using passive sentences is an interesting topic to discuss, as passive sentences in German have structural differences from Indonesian. This action research, which utilized data from observations, documentation, and interviews, was conducted with 31 students from the German Literature Program in the Writing 4 course during the even semester of the 2024/2025 academic year as respondents. The results of the study indicate that the use of Easy German videos in teaching German recipe writing enhances students' writing skills, and 87% of respondents stated that the topics presented in the Easy German videos are relevant to supporting German language learning in their classes. Students' understanding of German culinary traditions is also enriched through exposure to German recipes.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the systematic use of deictic expressions in hate speech targeting presidential candidates on platform X during Indonesia's 2024 election campaign period. This research seeks to understand how linguistic mechanisms, particularly deixis, function as strategic tools for constructing power relationships, facilitating dehumanization, and undermining democratic discourse in digital political communication. The study employs a descriptive qualitative design using a cyber-pragmatic approach to analyze hate speech on social media platform X during Indonesia's 2024 presidential election campaign, with data collected through observation and screenshot documentation of linguistic phenomena containing deictic expressions, followed by analysis using note-taking techniques to identify hate speech components and their linguistic patterns. Based on the analysis of 45 hate speech incidents targeting Indonesian presidential candidates on social media platform X during the 2024 election campaign, the study reveals that Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka received the highest targeting (44.4%), followed by Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar (37.8%), with insults and profanity comprising the dominant category (34.8%) of hate speech. The deictic analysis demonstrates that social deixis shows the strongest correlation with ethnic attacks and stereotyping, while systematic dehumanizing language patterns vary distinctly across candidate pairs, reflecting deep political polarization facilitated through strategic linguistic positioning mechanisms. The systematic distribution of hate speech through deictic linguistic strategies during Indonesia's 2024 presidential election campaign, which disproportionately targeted certain candidates through social deixis-facilitated ethnic attacks and dehumanization, necessitates the immediate implementation of AI-powered pattern recognition systems, real-time monitoring protocols, and comprehensive digital literacy programs to protect democratic discourse integrity and safeguard future electoral processes.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the impact of climate change on both the environment and the characters. It uses ecocriticism theory to examine the effects of climate change, and psychoterratic theory to analyze the psychological effects experienced by the characters in response to the climate crisis. The data sources needed were obtained from the narrative and dialogue in the novel by Nick Fuller Googins entitled The Great Transition (2023), using qualitative analysis methods. The study findings indicate that climate change leads to significant environmental changes, including air pollution from forest fires, plastic waste pollution in coastal areas, the death of wildlife due to diseases and pests, species migration, and rising sea levels caused by melting ice. Furthermore, these impacts are also directly related to the character’s life, as reflected through psychological responses such as ecological anxiety, which underscores the emotional toll of climate change on individuals. Therefore, climate change can be categorized as a major threat to environmental sustainability and human well-being.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms, functions of registers based on Halliday's theory, and aspects underlying the use of the register in one of the stalls in Rumbia District, Central Lampung, which is multicultural. The method applied in this study is a descriptive qualitative method, involving interviews and the Simak Bebas Libat Cakap (SBLC) technique to obtain relevant data. The data are in the form of utterances from sellers and buyers containing registers. The data are then analyzed and classified based on their form and function. Based on the analysis, the findings show that there are 19 (23,75%) monomorphemic registers and 61 (76,25%) polymorphemic registers. The register functions include 17 instrumental, 9 regulatory, 35 representative, 10 interaction, 3 personal, 2 heuristic, and 4 imaginative functions. These registers are predominantly derived from Javanese (82,5%) because the seller and the majority of buyers are Javanese. Registers tend to be used to explain the condition, type, and quantity of goods, as well as specific terms for an item. The use of registers is also adjusted based on social status, the buyer's language, social relationships, and the community's culture. Registering at Bek Ni's stall is not only for transactional interactions, but also to maintain social relationships, as a source of information, as a medium of expression, and to strengthen cultural and linguistic identity.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze how the character Link in Mainstream (2020) experienced and expressed social anxiety within the pressures of digital visibility, using Clark and Wells’ cognitive model of Social Anxiety Disorder as the primary theoretical framework and the Uses and Gratifications (U&G) theory as the supporting framework. Clark and Wells (1995) argued that social anxiety developed through processes such as distorted self-perception, fear of negative evaluation, self-focused attention, and maladaptive safety behaviors. Meanwhile, the U&G theory explained how audiences actively sought entertainment, identity reinforcement, social interaction, and validation, which in turn shaped a content creator’s behavioral patterns. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method by analyzing selected scenes, dialogue, and visual elements that illustrated Link’s psychological tension and online engagement. The findings revealed that Link’s social anxiety manifested through defensive speech, emotional withdrawal, exaggerated self-blame, and heightened sensitivity to public criticism. The analysis also showed that audience gratifications played a major role in influencing Link’s online behavior, pushing him toward extreme actions to maintain attention and approval. Overall, the research concluded that Link’s characterization reflected the destructive interaction between social anxiety and the pursuit of online validation within digital culture. These results contribute to a broader understanding of how films portray psychological vulnerability shaped by digital pressures.

Abstract

The integration of digital technology into English as a Foreign Language instruction has become a crucial requirement in the Indonesian educational context. One technological tool that has recently gained prominence is Grammarly, an automated writing evaluation application that provides real-time feedback. However, the effectiveness of Grammarly in writing instruction largely depends on teachers’ Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK). This study aims to investigate how Indonesian EFL teachers demonstrate their TPACK of Grammarly in the writing course. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis involving Indonesian EFL teachers. The findings demonstrate that teachers’ TPACK is enacted through three interrelated instructional practices in technology-enhanced writing instruction. Teachers shift traditional writing pedagogy toward technology-mediated learning by critically integrating Grammarly as a formative feedback tool rather than a corrective substitute. They further employ multimodal representations to scaffold students’ grammatical understanding within written discourse, while modeling effective writing practices through guided interpretation and selective uptake of Grammarly-generated feedback. The study critically concludes that strong TPACK is essential for preventing overreliance on automated feedback, enabling teachers to appropriate Grammarly as a pedagogically mediated resource that fosters students’ grammatical awareness, metalinguistic reflection, and autonomous writing development.
