Abstract

  The aim of this study was to describe the difference between subordinate in Indonesian and in English viewed from subordinate clause theory from Jim Miller. This study used qualitative descriptive approach.  Primary data of this study were written texts containing sentences and clauses in English and Indonesian the corpus of which was selected from academic texts.  Data were collected using record.  Segmenting immediate constituent was used to analyze the data.  The research revealed that Indonesian has neither elliptic conjunction in all relative and adverbial clauses nor non-finite subordinate clauses. English has no elliptic conjunction only in relative clauses showing possessiveness and all adverbial clauses except for time and result but has non-finite subordinate clauses. Indonesian has no relative clause elliptic conjunction non-finite subordinate clause. English relative clause elliptic conjunction is available and  empty elliptic conjunction in all adverbial clauses appear. English has non-finite subordinate clauses.

Abstract

 This study reports funeral ceremony tradition of Saur Matua of Batak Toba, Indonesia.  Oral tradition is the traditional delivered orally using words, transformed by the times and the adjustment to the context of the times.  A qualitative using ethnograpic approach is used in this study.  Data were explored from an observation and an in-depth interview on the conduct of Saur Matua ceremony.  The study revealed that Saur Matua in Toba Batak has 10 full characteristics  of oral tradition: (1) Representing the events as the context; (2) Having a cultural activity; (3) To be observed and watched; (4) Traditional characteristics; (5) Inherited from generation to generation; (6) Delivering process "from mouth to ear"; (7) Containing the values and cultural norms; (8) Having variety version; (9) Owned jointly by a particular community, and (10) Potentially revitalized and raised as a source of cultural industries. The Saur Matua has a text, co-text, context, value or norm, meaning or function and local wisdom that must be preserved continuously by generations to be not lost from the death tradition in Toba Batak society.

Abstract

This reasearch aims to describe translation qualities of proposal clause, explain the effect of translation techniques to the translation qualities and  the impact of proposal translations to the children as target viewer on dubbing interpersonal-transacsional: proposal “Thomas and Friends: Blue Mountain Mystery” the movie. This descriptive-qualitative research applies purposive sampling techniques. The main resource is dubbing “Thomas and Friends: Blue Mountain Mystery” the movie and its indonesian version. Data were collected using: (1) document analysis to obtain the clause of interpersonal-transacsional: proposal, (2) questionnaire and interview to obtain translation quality data which covers accuracy, acceptability and readability. The result of the study shows that movie dubbing used narrative genre and its text structure is devided into orientation, complication and resolution. Each structure consists of declarative clause, interogative and imperative. The translation shifts occured in the forms of declarative clause and imperative clause. The shift types are in the clause type, proposal meaning or social function, and in both clause type and meaning.

Abstract

 This study focuses on the behavior of pronouns persona /te/ to express aspects and possessions in the structure of the Masbagic sasak language sentence. This research is descriptive conducted solely based on the facts that exist or the phenomenon that empirically live on the speakers. Researchers describe the data contained in the systematic data related to the problems studied. Data collection referred to the technique of lively cognate and recording techniques. Data were analyzed using intralingual pad method, presenting the result on informal method. The results are pronomina persone has a clitic form of proclitik te- and enclitik -te. When the pronominal persona of the proclical form meets with the verb it will express an aspect and there will be phoneme changes in the verb. When the pronouns persona of the enclosed form meets the nouns it will declare an ownership that there will be an addition of phoneme /n/ if the word attached ends in the vowel and there is no phoneme change in the noun attached if the consonant ends.

Abstract

 This research investigated the form and types of circumstances,  translation techniques, translation quality of circumstances, and the impact of translation techniques towards the form, types and translation quality of circumstances in bilingual kids story book. This qualitative research used systemic functional linguistic approach. The data obtained was analyzed using analysis technique of Spradley. The results show that circumstances were expressed in the form of words, group of words, and prepositional phrases, having 7 types: circumstances of location, circumstances of manner, circumstances of extent, circumstances of causes, circumstances of accompaniment, circumstances of role, and circumstances of matter. The translation techniques include: single variant, couplet, triplet and quartet. Children stories vary in types and forms of circumstances, depending on the focus and plot of the stories. The translation techniques lead to either cause translation shift or translation qualities of the circumstances are of good quality in terms of accuracy, acceptability and high readability.

Abstract

This research examines the process of acquiring bahasa Indonesia for the 0-2 years old children in term of phonology and morphology. The research was conducted in one housing resort in Rancak city, the district of Praya, central Lombok namely BTN Pujawan Permai. The reason is that because the people living in this housing resort come from variety of places. In collecting data the researcher applied theory of psycholinguistic using field notes and interview the subjects.  The results are as follows: First, phonologically, the 0-2 years old children are still not able to pronounce some phones clearly such as the fricative consonant [r] which they are changed into lateral consonant [l]. Second, morphologically, children are able to use nouns, adjectives, verbs and some simple phrases correctly event their pronunciation is still not very clear.

Abstract

 The study aims to determine the politeness strategies of refusal used by the Ambonese in refusing requests, and to determine the affects of social relationship towards politeness strategies of refusal used by the Ambonese in refusing requests. The data were taken from 25 respondents of Ambonese in Namlea sub-district, Buru Regency of Maluku Province by recording the conversations in any situation and taking note to remember every little thing that would be happened between the interlocutors. The analysis was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The results showed that Ambonese people more likely to combine more than two or three strategies in refusing requests. In the interaction between strangers, Ambonese people tend to use positive politeness strategy such as expressing gratitude which is combined by addressed form, reason and offer new solutions. In solidarity politeness system such as intimate relationship, Ambonese people tend to combine addressed form, reason, promise, joke or offer new solution as sub-strategies of positive politeness strategy. In hierarchical politeness system, Ambonese people tend to use negative politeness strategy such as apology, give deference and be conventionally indirect.

Abstract

 This research aims at describing the correct use of directional complements and elaborating the diversity and meanings of compound directional complement (CDC) used in Mandarin learners' interlanguage. This research is a case study on the essay of  Universitas Indonesia Chinese Study Program students. Results were obtained through qualitative data analysis method supported by simple calculation. Learners’ accuracy was reflected in identifying the direction of action, ordering the constituents in a sentence with directional complement, and selecting the motion verb. Meanwhile, inaccuracy appeared in four categories: misselection, misordering, overinclusion, and blends. On the other hand, the use of directional complements with literal meaning was very diverse, but not so for the metaphorical ones. Although the frequency of the metaphorical use of CDC was higher than the literal ones, there was a lack of the variation in the type of CDC used by the learners.

Abstract

  One of the female phenomena which was authored by the authors short stories in Media Indonesia is the narrative of oppressed women. The purpose of this study is to explore the image of women in short stories in the Media Indonesia. This research is descriptive qualitative research that focuses on the image of women. The approach used in this research is the feminism approach. The data were analysis techniques using heuristic and hermeneutic techniques. The results of the study indicate that there are various negative treatments experienced by women. The author used  the short stories as a representation of their images through the Media Indonesia daily. Women's image is manifested in the form of physical image, psychic, helpless, resigned to the situation, housewife, loyalty, child guard, domestic, husband's companion, and social.

Abstract

 The purposes of this study are to describe the meaning of nggahi funds and makka,  a tradition to welcome honored guests in Dompu and to identify meanings in the nggahi and makka in the recent social values.  The tradition was derived from the indigenous local cultures that currently was retained as one of the folklore so that the researchers approached using the ethnographic study. Three informants were interviewed, tradition ceremony to welcome guests was observed records were analyzed, and introspection was conducted.   Analyses were done based on the verbatim transcripts of the traditions.  The study revealed that four symbols apply in the nggahi fund traditions and two in makka having connotative and denotative meaning.  Guests are greatly appreciated and served in high honors.  Values as the Islamic teaching denote are embedded in the social interations in the nggahi and makka.
