Abstract

This research aims to explore the construction of a culture of peace in kinship relations (gandong) among the villages of Booi, Aboru, Kariu, and Hualoy (BAKH), Christian-Muslim communities, which have a culture-brotherhood narrative. Located on various islands in Central Maluku, these villages preserve the narrative of culture-brotherhood as the basis of social and religious life. Embracing different religious beliefs, the four villages celebrate cultural-kinship ties through religious symbols: churches and mosques. In 1971, the four villages built a mosque in Hualoy, a Muslim village. Even though the three have different religious beliefs, this mosque is classified as a mosque with BAKH. In the midst of the 1999 – 2004 Maluku conflict which turned Ambon, the capital of Maluku Province, into social segregation, the four villages rebuilt the Kariu church, a Christian village in 2017. Support for the construction of this church came from BAKH residents in Maluku and the diaspora. Using ethnographic methods, this research investigates the cultural narrative behind the performativity of Christians-Muslims involved in previous conflicts, but collectively rebuilding religious holy places. This research concludes that kinship cultural relationships, performative actions and shared symbols contribute to the peace building process in the post-conflict region, Maluku. Keywords: Construction, Culture of Peace, Collaboration with BAKH, Cultural and Religious Identity

Abstract

This research explores the dynamics of freedom of opinion and expression during the second period of Joko Widodo's presidency using the lens of deliberative democracy according to the thinking of Jurgen Habermas. Through the method of philosophical descriptive hermeneutic analysis of Jurgen Habermas' deliberative democracy, as well as analysing the index of democracy and freedom of opinion and expression in the second period of Joko Widodo's presidency. This research aims to understand the extent to which the principles of deliberative democracy are reflected in government policies and public behaviour. The findings show that in the second term of President Jokowi's administration there was a decline in the democracy index due to the restriction of freedom of expression and opinion by using the ITE Law. This has resulted in people being afraid to express their opinions in public spaces. According to Jurgen Habermas' deliberative democracy in reviewing the second term of President Joko Widodo's administration, Indonesia's democratic governance system lacks inclusiveness, egalitarianism and dynamism in public decision-making, so this is a major obstacle on the way to true deliberative democracy. Therefore, the study concludes by suggesting the need for further reforms in strengthening democratic institutions and culture to enhance meaningful public participation and ensure broader and more inclusive freedom of opinion and expression.

Abstract

Carok is often used as a last resort by the Madurese people to resolve a problem due to their inherently tough nature. In this context, there is a demand for efforts to overcome this tradition. This research aims to implement the values of religious moderation to minimize the occurrence of the carok tradition in Madura. This study uses a library research method with primary data sources being the concept of religious moderation. Secondary data sources are obtained from literature such as books, journals, and relevant websites aligned with the research topic. The findings of this research are as follows: The carok tradition is a violent practice carried out by the Madurese as a form of defense concerning their self-esteem when their dignity is trampled, their wives are disturbed, and their families are harmed. There are three factors that lead the Madurese to carry out carok: when their dignity is trampled, their wives are disturbed, and their families are harmed. Religious moderation is a moderate Islamic concept that can counteract and minimize the occurrence of carok in Madura by instilling and applying socio-religious moderation values such as tolerance, engaging in deliberation to resolve conflicts, avoiding excessiveness, and being anti-violence.

Abstract

This article attempts to look at church-based conflicts using the Critical Leadership (CL) approach in collaboration with Actor Network Theory (ANT) and finds its relevance for communal life. Using an interdisciplinary approach with qualitative methods, the collaboration of CL and ANT found that all resources of religious organizations in conflict situations are networks of actors whose interactions legitimize power and can also be a path to reconciliation. From the lens of CL and ANT, conflicts that result in dualism in church organizations are seen as both a process and a result of actor interactions and relations during the conflict. Therefore, reconciliation can also be used as a process and a result of the CL and ANT mechanisms which then present policy recommendations such as the intensity of structural actor meetings that can produce joint programs for church members, and can also be a path for institutional unification and reconciliation.
