International Journal of Linguistics and Discourse Analytics (IJOLIDA) is a peer-reviewed academic journal of linguistics and discourse analytics published by Denpasar Institute. The journal publishes both articles and book reviews. It publishes two special issues a year. IJOLIDA encourages submissions that incorporate theories and methodologies from all traditions of linguistics and discourse analytics to explore any aspect of language and discourse. Areas of study at the intersection of linguistics and discourse analytics include, but are not limited to: applied linguistics, functional linguistics, text linguistics, discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, conversation analysis, linguistic anthropology, ethnography of communication, narrative studies, social semiotics, literacy studies, language policy, language ideology, language teaching or language grammar.

Abstract

In the current times, the use of cohesive devices is not only found in formal texts, but also in informal texts such as song lyrics. Accordingly, this study aims to identify the types and to analyze the functions of references from the lyrics of three songs by Nicole Zefanya; “Urs”, “Around”, and “Lose”. This study was conducted using descriptive quantitative method. Documentation method and note-taking technique were used to collect the data. In analyzing the data, this study used the theory from Halliday and Hassan (1976) about grammatical cohesion, to be specific, about reference. The analysis of data was presented using formal and informal method. The results of this study showed that all kinds of reference found in the lyrics of each song of Nicole Zefanya, namely personal reference, demonstrative reference, and comparative reference. Based on the analysis, the data in the lyrics are dominated by personal reference compared to demonstrative reference and comparative reference. In detail, personal reference with 169 occurrences, demonstrative reference with 42 occurrences, and comparative reference with 11 occurrences. Thus, each reference has different functions; as the head of reference, a reference to the previous object, as a modifier, a reference to the following object, a general comparison which refers to things that similar or not similar. Based on the results of this study, reference plays a vital role in establishing coherence, ensuring clarity, and contributing to the overall meaning of the song by connecting the language elements within the lyrics

Abstract

In sociolinguistics, study about language and gender exists which relates to the relationship between the language of male and female. The most popular study about the related topic is the study of women’s language features by Robin Lakoff. The way women and men in delivering content in a conversation have different characteristics and it is interesting to be studied hence we acknowledge how language is used by different genders, especially for women as the most frequent role to be appeared in the data source. This study aimed at identifying the types of women’s language and describing the functions of each feature applied by the female casts of Bridgerton in an interview video. The data in this study were taken from a YouTube video held by Netflix entitled “TUDUM: Extended Talent Panel”. The method used in collecting the data was the observation method along with the note-taking technique. The theory used to analyze the data was the theory of women’s language proposed by Lakoff (1995). The result of this study shows that there are seven women’s language features found in the Youtube interview video of Bridgerton cast such as lexical hedges or fillers, tag questions, rising intonation on declarative, empty adjectives, intensifiers, hypercorrect grammar, and avoidance of strong words. However, some women’s language features are absent in the video such as precise color terms, super-polite form, and emphatic stress. The most dominant feature used is the lexical hedges with a total of 3 types used by the female cast. This feature is used to indicate that the speaker is uncertain about their statements, to give preparation time before the statement, and to decrease the strength of the statement.Bridgerton

Abstract

This study aims to: (i) analyze the tree diagram structure of sentence patterns found in the novel entitled “The Prince”, (ii) analyze the types of translation shifts of sentence patterns in the translation process found in the novel entitled “The Prince”. This research focuses on The Syntax Analysis and its Translation Found on Sentence Patterns in the Novel entitled “The Prince”. This study aims at analyzing the tree diagram structure and the types of translation shifts found in the novel entitled “The Prince”. In analyzing data, this study applied the theory of sentence patterns proposed by Quirk and Greenbaum and the theory of translations shift proposed by Catford. In the method and technique of collecting data, the process of collecting data was started by reading the entire data source to get the story in the novel entitled “The Prince” and observe the data of sentence patterns that can be taken from the story entitled “The Prince”. Then, the data source was read to get simple sentence patterns found in the data source. This research study found that there are seven sentence patterns translated by using unit shift of translation proposed by Catford. The researcher applied the theory of syntax, types of sentences, sentence pattern, tree diagram, and reviewed the previous studies. The implication of the study is that it can give the understanding of translation analysis found in the data source and can be used as teaching materials

Abstract

Children's stories, especially Balinese stories, are one of the effective media to provide environmental education to children and introduce their mother tongue or regional language as early as possible as a form of language preservation. In addition, the introduction of stories to children from an early age will have an impact on children's love of literacy. This research analyses the environmental lexicon from an ecolinguistics perspective found in Balinese children's stories. This research aims to identify biological, sociological, and ideological aspects of Balinese children's stories. This is qualitative research, the data was taken from a Balinese children’s story entitled Pasawitran I Jangkrik Teken I Petani. The result shows that children can learn some environmental and farming-based lexicons in this story, which is very good and necessary for language preservation. Ideologically, children are invited to understand the importance of environmental protection and ecological balance. By applying these sociological aspects in the story Pasawitran I Jangkrik Teken I Petani children can learn about social dynamics, tradition, and social systems

Abstract

This study entitled “The Syntax Analysis of Adverb of Manner Found in the Novel “Harry Potter”. The form of adverb of manner and its positions of adverb of manner found in the clause and sentence structure found in the novel entitled “The Lost Symbol” are analyzed. The theory proposed by Brown and Miller (1991) was used in this study and it was supported by other theories in analyzing the form and the position in adverb of manner found in the sentence structure. The study implemented qualitative method in library research. The data were taken from the novel entitled “Harry Potter” that was written by J.K Rowling. The The research suggests that there were one form of adverb of manner found in the novel entitled “Harry Potter”. The adverb of manner is filled in the sentence structure in the form of adverb of manner and prepositional phrase. Suffix –ly can be in the positive form of the adjective. The form of adverb of manner is in the prepositional phrase characterized by a preposition as the head of adverbial.

Abstract

A power of attorney is a document that gives authority to another party to carry out legal actions, for and on behalf of the person giving the power of attorney. Power of attorney consists of special power of attorney and general power of attorney. A special power of attorney explains what actions the recipient of the power can take. This research analyzes the situational context in the text of a notarial deed agreement and the differences between the text of a special power of attorney and a general power of attorney. This research uses functional systemic linguistic theory proposed by Halliday (2004), meaning semantics and forensic linguistic theory proposed by Olsson (2008). Qualitative research methods are used to describe a phenomenon in depth and are carried out by collecting data. Qualitative methods use observation of phenomena and research more into the substance of the meaning of the phenomenon. This method is used to analyze the context of the situation contained in the text using the theory put forward by Halliday (2002). Data were analyzed using situational context theory proposed by Halliday (2004). Data were analyzed using situational context theory which analyzes the field, participants and text modes used in the agreement letter between the authorizer and the recipient. This research shows that the text is dominated by a relational process which aims to provide information about agreements and agreements in the text of the notarial deed. Abstract

The study of applied linguistics aims to understand and address real-world problems, including language used in social contexts. Language use is an important point of view in applied linguistics. Language code switching can impact how a communication is understood and perceived. The method used in this study is qualitative research method and to gather data observational methods areapplied. This study investigates how social identity construction and communication strategies are affected by code-switching. The ultimate goal of this research is to advance the field of applied linguistics by providing a more sophisticated understanding of spoken text code-switching and its consequences for successful intercultural and multilingual communication. YouTube videos from AryKakul Bali were selected for use as research subjects in this study. The results of the study shows that a practical impact of applied linguistics and code-switching analysis on spoken language take into account the changing nature of language used in social contexts. This data analysis revealed three distinct types of code switching: inter-sentential code switching, intra-sentential code switching, and tag switching. The most common type that appeared from the data used was intra-sentential code switching out of these three types.

Abstract

This analysis discussed about Error analysis and remedial work on 4th semester students at Dhyana Pura University Bali in the year of 2023/2024 odd semester. This results of the material of comparative and superlative adjective given to 4th semester students from five different study programs namely (English literature, Psychology, Accountant, Management, D3 Digital Marketing) with the total 16 students. The purpose of this study was to find Error and find the most efficient way of giving the remedial task for in-depth understanding. This study uses qualitative research methods with descriptive research types to provide an explanation for the mistakes the students made in the students’ tasks. The data collection technique used by the author is through the results of the first error test and providing material in the form of remedial work that uses questions that are easier than the first test questions. Using the types of error theory from Dulay 1982, this analysis found that the types of errors produced by the 4th semester students studied, reflect the types of error namely omission, addition, mis formation, and mis ordering forms

Abstract

In the context of BIPA learning, understanding the variations in the use of affixes in narrative texts has great relevance. Narrative is a type of text that is often used in language learning to develop speaking, writing and reading comprehension skills. The use of affixes in narrative texts by BIPA students can be a reflection of their understanding of Indonesian and their ability to apply them in certain contexts. This research uses Indonesian grammar theory. Grammatical theory is used to examine grammatical variations in sentences used and errors in the use of affixes in sentences used by BIPA students. In the data collection stage, the observation method was used. In applying the listening method, it is then followed by the note-taking technique. The collected data was analyzed using the agih method with basic techniques, namely deletion, substitution and permutation, while formal and informal methods were used to present the analysis results. Based on research that has been conducted, the types of affixes taught to BIPA students are the prefixes ber-, meng-, peng-, per-, di-, ter-, ber- R. Confixes peng-…-an, per-...-an, ke-...-an, ber-…-an, se-…-nya, ber-R-an, se-R-nya.. The suffix -nya, -an, and the simulfix meng-...-kan, meng-...-i, memper-...-i, memper-...-kan, ber-...-kan. Of the affixes taught, the types of affixes that BIPA students are able to use are the prefixes meng-, ter-, di-, ber-, peng-, ber-R. Confix peng-...-an, ke-…-an, per-…-an, ber-…-an, se-...-nya. Suffix -an, -nya, and the simulfixes meng-...-kan, meng-...-i, memper-...-kan, and memper-...-i. Infixes are not used by BIPA students because they are not taught

Abstract

Entitled Investigating Interlingual and Intralingual Error of Diploma III Program in Sekolah Tinggi Pariwisata Mataram: An Error Analysis of Learners’ Use of English as a Foreign Language, this study attempted to find out (1) the types of errors that students made in their writing, (2) the sources of those errors, (3) and why global errors were still committed by students in Diploma III Program. As such, the study was designed as a case study. It was conducted in Diploma III Program of STP Mataram and a ‘writing project’ was used to collect the data. In this research, the researcher also used questionnaire and interview to obtain additional data. The results of this study show that a total of 200 errors were made by the university students. They can be categorized into five types: The first type is omission error. The numbers of omission errors are 50 errors (25%). The second type is misinformation error. The numbers of misinformation errors are 60 errors (30%). The third type is misordering error. The numbers of misordering errors are 10 errors (5%). The fourth type is overgeneralization error. The number of overgeneralization errors is 70 errors (35%). The last type is global error. The numbers of global errors are 10 errors (5%). In relation to the language transfer causing the errors, three kinds of transfer were found, namely: interlingual transfer, intralingual transfer, and transfer of learning. In addition, in term of global errors, the researcher found two main factors that cause global errors, namely, over-literal translation and lack of information about the sentence-structure of English and English grammar
