Abstract

This paper explains how to apply the significance test of a synonym set in French to its appearance in a data corpus. The chi-square significance test is a procedure that can be used to test the significance of quantitative data statistically. The object of this research is a series of adjective synonyms with the core meaning 'extraordinary' in French. This research uses Leipzig corpora collection as data source, and AntConc (version 4.2.0) as a tool used in searching for the frequency of occurrence of each synonymous word in the news and website data corpus. The results of the significance test show that distributions differences between the real frequency of occurrence and the expected frequency of occurrence of synonymous words in the data corpus can be considered as not just a coincidence. With a p value < 0.001, it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between the differences in the distribution of each adjective in different types of data corpus

Abstract

Code-switching, a bilingual phenomenon in linguistics, refers to the practice of transitioning from one language to another, often between sentences. This practice is significant for understanding bilingual communication and identity expression. While code-switching can manifest across different languages, this study specifically focuses on English-French code-switching used by the main character in Emily in Paris. The research aims to categorize the types of code-switching observed and analyze the function of code-switching used by the main character in Emily in Paris. This research employs a qualitative research approach to comprehensively analyze instances of code-switching in the series. The primary method utilized for data collection involves documentation, utilizing note-taking techniques to thoroughly examine Emily in Paris based on both the movie script and subtitles. The collected data is analyzed through the theory of Appel and Muysken (2005), which classifies code-switching into three types: tag switches, intra-sentential switches, and inter-sentential switches. Additionally, the research explores six functions of code-switching: referential, directive, expressive, phatic, metalinguistic, and poetic functions. The analysis shows that Emily utilizes all three types of code-switching in her utterances, as well as various functions of code-switching. However, the predominant type observed is intra-sentential switching, where Emily inserts French terms into her English sentences. Concerning the functions of code-switching, Emily frequently employs the expressive function to emphasize a mixed identity by using English and French within a single conversation. While other functions such as referential, directive, phatic, metalinguistic, and poetic are also present in Emily’s speech, they occur less frequently. However, there are also instances of data that serve two functions of code-switching

Abstract

This study aims to identify the external conflicts faced by the main characters in the movie Elemental: Forces of Nature. External conflict is a struggle between a character and an outside force. This force can be another character, society, nature, or a physical obstacle. It's when a character faces challenges that come from their environment or other people, rather than from their own mind or emotions. The objective is to categorize the different types of external conflicts encountered by the characters. Data analysis was conducted using Kenney’s (1966) theory. The data obtained were collected through observation and note-taking, which involved watching the movie and marking parts that expressed the conflict. The data was analyzed using qualitative method and presented descriptively. This study uncovers various external conflicts that the characters face in Elemental: Forces of Nature movie. The findings illustrate how the main characters' interactions with external forces shape their journey and development within the storyline. By categorizing these conflicts, the study provides a deeper understanding of the character dynamics within the movie
