Abstract

This research aims to critically examine the righteous State in Buddhism as articulated in the selected discourses from the Sutta Piṭaka. Through qualitative research methodology with library approach, this research was carried out by collecting data from primary sources and secondary sources. This research shows that according to Buddhism, righteous State is not only as a good governance, but also include the righteous people in the society. It is understood that even though, Buddhism directly shows the path to get rid of existence (saṃsāra), but the Buddha and his disciples lived in society. Therefore, the Buddha tried to promote social virtues, duties and responsibilities necessary for a better social pattern. The Anukampaka, Vyagghapajja and Sigālovāda discourses include the teachings required to secure social values. According to the Rajja Sutta of Saṃyutta Nikāya, the Buddha’s attitude was to see a governance that does not kill or harm others. The Buddha preached the king Kosala once that there is no real winner in war, and it destroys social harmony as well. So, Buddhism focuses not only on creating a good governance, but also a society with moral people, and building a good State in the combination of both.

Abstract

This research aims to critically examine the historical background of Dhammayuttika Nikāya in Mon State, Myanmar, and its impact in Buddhism there. The Dhammayuttika Nikāya was founded by King Mongkut of Thailand in the 19th century and expanded under King Chulalongkorn’s reforms, which led to regional resistance in Northern and Northeastern Thailand. The Nikāya also spread to Cambodia and Myanmar. In Myanmar, the Dhammayuttika Nikāya, known locally as the Mahāyin Gaing, was established in 1874 with minimal resistance. This research examines the lineage of the Nikāya's leaders, their ordination practices, and their monastic education. It further explores the social and historical connections between the Dhammayuttika Nikāya and other Nikāyas, and assesses the impact of the Dhammayuttika Nikāya's Buddhist text recitation ceremonies and the Chaungzon monastic examination. Employing a qualitative methodology with a library approach, this study analyzes primary sources such as Buddhist scriptures and secondary sources including scholarly writings, journals and articles, to show the Dhammayuttika Nikāya's contributions for propagation of Buddhism. This research contributes an in-depth understanding on the historical background and impacts of the Dhammayuttika Nikāya or Mahāyin Gaing in Mon State of Myanmar.

Abstract

This case study aims to analyze Buddhist religious education services in Tulang Bawang Barat Regency, Lampung Province, particularly for students who do not receive Buddhist Religious Education in formal schools. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method, with data collection conducted through observation, interviews, and documentation assisted by data collection guidelines. The data validity is ensured through credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability criteria. Data analysis is performed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model, including stages of data collection, condensation, presentation, and conclusion/verification. The research findings show that the number of Buddhist students in Tulang Bawang Barat Regency is relatively small, and their right to receive Buddhist religious education services has not been fully met. Furthermore, there is only one Buddhist religious teacher with a bachelor's degree in the regency. The Buddhist religious education services received by the students include attending Buddhist lessons from a Buddhist teacher, attending other religious lessons but receiving Buddhist material from a classroom teacher or another religious teacher, and not receiving Buddhist religious education services. Several parties have attempted to find solutions by providing training and development for Buddhist teachers and Sunday School organizers, seeking new Buddhist teachers, and providing materials from the Vihara with available books. In addition, coordination with Buddhist teachers and the communication of issues through parent-teacher meetings have also been carried out.

Abstract

This study explores the two distinct forms of Buddhism in Bangladesh—Bengali and Jumma Buddhism. Bengali Buddhism, associated with the Barua community and integrated into the dominant Bengali-Muslim identity. On the other hand, Jumma Buddhism refers to the multicultural and linguistic indigenous Buddhist communities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT). It investigates how the Bangladeshi state imposes Bengali identity and Islamic culture on these diverse multi-ethnic, multi-linguistic indigenous populations by classifying Jumma peoples as “small or sub-tribal” rather than “indigenous or Jumma.” This legal and cultural framing facilitates identity erasure and cultural assimilation. The study employs a documentary research approach and qualitative textual analysis of constitutional documents, scholarly works, and human rights reports to examine how these identities are constructed and marginalized. Findings reveal that although Bengali and Jumma Buddhists appear to coexist, Jumma Buddhists continue to face systematic exclusion, state-led violence, and loss of cultural autonomy. This marginalization contradicts the core Buddhist values of mettā (loving-kindness), karuṇā (compassion), and upekkhā (equanimity). The study calls for formal recognition of Jumma identity and the application of Buddhist ethical frameworks to promote meaningful coexistence, peacebuilding, and the protection of indigenous rights within the national framework of Bangladesh. This study suggests exploring the lived experiences of the Jumma Buddhists and the role of Buddhism in resisting cultural homogenization for further research in this field.
