Abstract

PT XYZ as a cement sack manufacturer still faces product defect issues that have the potential to reduce efficiency and quality. This study aims to analyze the level of defects, the stability of the production process, and identify the root causes of defects using Statistical Quality Control (SQC) and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) methods. The data analyzed came from the period January–June 2025 with a total production of 3,355,452 units and the number of defects was 32,025 units (0.95%). The results of the Pareto analysis showed that the keperet defect had the largest contribution of 43.55% (13,946 units), followed by the folded patch 11.98% and the oblique triangle 11.38%. The P control chart showed a CL value of 0.0061 with all points between the UCL and LCL, while the C control chart produced a C̄ of 5,338 which was still within the statistical control limits. The RCA analysis identified human, machine, material, method, and environmental factors as the main causes of defects. Improvements focused on SOP consistency, machine maintenance, and material control.

Abstract

High seal integrity is critical for multilayer flexible packaging (PET/ALU/PE/LLDPE) to ensure product quality and safety. This study aims to optimize heat-sealing parameters—temperature, pressure, and time—using Design of Experiments (DOE) within a response surface approach. A full-factorial design (3×3×3) was applied, involving three levels for each factor (temperature: 120–140 °C; pressure: 2–4 bar; time: 0.5–1.5 s), resulting in 27 experimental runs. Seal strength was measured in g/15 mm according to ASTM F88/F88M, and analyzed using ANOVA and quadratic regression modeling. Results indicate that all main effects and interactions are statistically significant (p < 0.05), with temperature and time as dominant factors, and a substantial temperature×pressure interaction. The model demonstrated excellent fit (Adjusted R² ≈ 97%). Optimization using Response Optimizer identified the best conditions at 134.7 °C, 4.0 bar, and 1.18 s, predicting seal strength of approximately 5,812 g/15 mm with desirability ≈ 0.95. These findings provide actionable guidance for improving seal quality, reducing defects, and enhancing process efficiency in flexible packaging manufacturing.

Abstract

Discrepancies between the Daily Operation Plan (ROH) and actual operation are issues that can affect the efficiency and operational costs of combined-cycle power plants. This study aims to analyze deviations between ROH and the actual realization of electricity production as well as the consumption of natural gas and High Speed Diesel (HSD) at the PT XYZ Combined Cycle Power Plant. The research was conducted using daily operational data from September to November 2025 obtained from the Planning and Operation Control and Commercial Division. The method applied was deviation analysis by calculating absolute and percentage differences between planned and actual values, which were then classified based on predefined performance thresholds. The results indicate that significant deviations still occurred during several operational periods, particularly in fuel consumption. As a recommendation, a simple spreadsheet-based early warning system using Microsoft Excel was developed to support daily operational monitoring and performance evaluation.

Abstract

Used cooking oil is a household waste that has the potential to pollute the environment, but it can still be used as a raw material for value-added surfactants. This study aims to examine the process of utilizing used cooking oil through the esterification and sulfonation stages to produce methyl ester sulfonate (MES) surfactants. The research method was carried out experimentally in the laboratory with the stages of pretreatment of used cooking oil, esterification using methanol and KOH catalyst at a temperature of 65–75 °C, followed by washing and purification of methyl esters, and the sulfonation process using H₂SO₄ and neutralization with NaOH. The results showed that the esterification process produced methyl esters with an increased level of purity despite a decrease in volume due to the washing process. The sulfonation stage successfully converted methyl esters into MES with amphiphilic properties suitable as surfactants. This study shows that used cooking oil has the potential to be used as a raw material for environmentally friendly and economically valuable surfactants.

Abstract

Sand contamination is a common issue in drilling operations, particularly in sandstone formations, as it can progressively degrade drilling fluid performance. This study aims to analyze the effect of sand contamination on drilling mud properties and the associated physical and chemical interactions affecting mud optimization. This research is an experimental laboratory study using a water-based drilling fluid system with sand contamination levels of 0%, 5%, and 10% by total mud volume. The evaluated parameters include mud weight, plastic viscosity, yield point, gel strength, pH, and filtration loss. The results indicate that sand contamination up to 5% remains within acceptable operational limits, while 10% contamination leads to significant deterioration of rheological properties, increased filtration loss, and reduced chemical stability.

Abstract

This study proposes a safer bentor frame design using a Research and Development (R&D) approach combined with the Pahl & Beitz design methodology. User requirements were gathered through field observations and questionnaires, revealing major safety issues in current bentor structures, including braking performance, suspension reliability, and dimensional inconsistency. A revised configuration was developed featuring a rear passenger layout, AISI 1020 frame material, front disc brake, telescopic suspension, and a differential drivetrain system. Structural performance was verified through static load simulation using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) based on real operating conditions. The results indicate a maximum stress of 140 MPa, displacement of 0.49 mm, and a safety factor of 2.49, remaining within the allowable limit of the material’s 351 MPa yield strength. These findings demonstrate that the proposed design offers improved structural integrity, stability, and operational safety, making it a viable alternative for practical implementation.

Abstract

The global construction sector contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for approximately 32–34% of total global emissions. In Indonesia, the construction industry has been growing at an annual rate of 6.4–7.5%, increasing the demand for sustainable building materials. This study aims to evaluate the structural feasibility and sustainability of bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper) and sandstone as building materials through a synthesis of published laboratory data and conceptual design analysis. The results indicate that bamboo exhibits high mechanical strength that meets and exceeds minimum structural standards, while sandstone demonstrates adequate compressive strength and superior thermal insulation performance compared to conventional concrete. The integrated application of both materials in a 52 m² conceptual villa design resulted in a 49.4% reduction in embodied carbon and an 8.2% reduction in construction costs. The use of hybrid bamboo–steel connections further enhances seismic resistance and structural integrity. These findings confirm that bamboo and sandstone are viable, sustainable, and efficient local material alternatives for residential construction in tropical regions.

Abstract

XYZ is a manufacturing company that produces television back cover components and is required to meet customer quality standards. However, in April, a defect rate of 7% was found, exceeding the company's tolerance limit of 5%, with the dominant type of defect being dirty defects. This situation has led to an increase in customer claims and has affected both quality costs and the company's reputation. This study aims to analyze the causes of dominant defects in back cover products and formulate corrective actions to reduce customer claims using the Plan Do Check Action (PDCA) method. The research method used is quantitative descriptive with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and production data analysis. Analytical tools include check sheets, Pareto diagrams, fishbone diagrams, and 5W+1H analysis. Research results indicate that the implementation of PDCA is able to identify the root causes of defects and generate effective improvement proposals to reduce defect levels and continuously enhance product quality.
