Abstract

This study examines the significant role played by Harun Ar-Rashid, the fifth caliph of the Abbasid Dynasty, in advancing education during his reign. Employing historical research methods, including heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, the research relies primarily on The History of Al-Tabari as a key source. The analysis reveals notable progress in education during Harun Ar-Rashid's Caliphate, attributing the Abbasid Dynasty's advancement to his educational policies. Initiatives such as the establishment of translation institutions, multiple libraries, and the integration of the Qur'an as a core curriculum contributed to this progress. Renowned scholars like Al-Khawarizmi, Al-Kindi, Ar-Raji, and Al-Ma’mun emerged due to these policies. Harun Ar-Rashid's proactive programs aimed at enhancing educational accessibility and fostering a love for science have enduring implications. If applied in contemporary education, these policies could contribute to equalizing educational quality. This article explores the historical roots of these initiatives, offering insights for present-day educational strategies and contributing to the discourse on educational equality. By understanding the legacy of Harun Ar-Rashid's educational efforts, we gain perspectives to guide modern endeavors in creating inclusive and effective educational systems.

Abstract

Specifically, this study seeks to break down the strategy of Islamization in the archipelago from the aspect of sea power (port potential). The theme of sea power was targeted in the study as a factor of Islamization because the 17th century Muslim traders experienced a heyday in the archipelago. Several studies have examined Islamization in the archipelago sourced from the coast. But, it has not explicitly mentioned the potential power played by ulama or umara in the Islamization strategy. The topic raised in this study is the Islamization of Malacca, Solor, and Mataram viewed from the perspective of sea power. The discourse raised is the strategy of Islamization of various potential aspects contained in the port such as political, social, cultural and economic aspects. The theory used to see multicausal in the process of Islamization is the theory of history. This study concludes that the pattern of cultural power built by Malacca is to build collaboration between Islamic law and customary law. Meanwhile, economic power is built by introducing muamalah Islam through symbols of fair and harmless policies. Mataram in terms of Islamization, bringing together Islamic students on the coast and Islamic Kejawen, through cultural policies (culture power). Meanwhile, Solor is more dominant in using political power through indigenization where Islamization is carried out by building an Islamic sultanate to accommodate the anti-colonial attitude of the local community. Furthermore, Islamization studies on more specific aspects are very meaningful for the development of Islamic historiography of the archipelago.

Abstract

Abstract

This article examines the existence and dynamics of the Rifa’iyah organization in Sukawera Village, Kertasemaya Subdistrict, Indramayu Regency, during the period of 2005–2020 by applying the four stages of the historical method: heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. This study is significant considering that the existence of Rifa’iyah in Sukawera has received limited attention in local historical literature, despite the fact that this organization is an Islamic group that has endured various challenges from the colonial era through the Reform era. Originating as a cultural movement, Rifa’iyah has successfully maintained its existence through religious activities centered on the Tarjumah recitations and the development of educational institutions. These two activities serve as the main pillars in sustaining the continuity of the movement as well as representing the organization’s adaptation to social dynamics and changing times.

Abstract

This study examines the political dynamics and contentious aspects of urban redevelopment in Jakarta from 2012 to 2022. The research aims to analyze the production, negotiation, and contestation of the city's spatial future by various actors, including the state, capital, and citizens, through regulatory planning, extensive infrastructure initiatives, and quotidian resistance practices. This study employs historical methods and urban historical analysis, utilizing primary sources including provincial spatial planning documents (RTRW, RPJMD), gubernatorial regulations, media archives, and court rulings concerning eviction disputes. Source criticism and interpretation were utilized to elucidate the interaction of modernization narratives, capital accumulation strategies, and community rights. The findings indicate that Jakarta's urban transformation has been propelled by a confluence of top-down governmental policies and the real estate shift facilitating capital accumulation via Transit-Oriented Development projects, reclamation, and mega-infrastructure, alongside grassroots citizen resistance manifested through litigation, advocacy, and the co-production of alternative spaces. These processes generate a spatial arrangement marked by modernization and exacerbating socio-spatial inequality. The study concludes that Jakarta exemplifies contested urbanism, wherein the city functions not merely as a neutral vessel for development but as a political arena influenced by continuous conflicts, negotiations, and compromises. This research enhances global urban studies by providing a nuanced comprehension of spatial politics in the Global South and emphasizing the necessity for inclusive, participatory planning to guarantee that future urban transformations reconcile economic growth with social justice.

Abstract

The sandalwood trade of the past is an interesting historical study topic to discuss, which is also one of the reasons why this theme is important to raise. Research on the transportation and sandalwood trade network in West Timor in the 19th century aims to reconstruct the historical process that occurred with the sandalwood trade in West Timor, which opened trade routes and networks with other regions in Asia and Europe. The main problem is how the transportation and trade network of West Timor sandalwood in the 19th century when West Timor was under the influence of the Dutch government? This is then explained in several research questions such as who were the main actors involved and what was the transportation model or system in the sandalwood trade in West Timor in the 19th century. To obtain answers to these main questions, a critical history method is used with the use of primary and secondary sources such as archives, journals, reports, photographs, and relevant reference reviews as well as archival analysis and literature studies to complete the data. The stages in this method include heuristics and data verification or source criticism, followed by interpretation and historiography or historical writing. This research found that Dutch government controls, such as shipping taxes, actually led to a decline in the sandalwood trade. Furthermore, local trade, initially conducted by indigenous traders from the Bugis, Makassarese, Javanese, and Chinese, began to be dominated by Chinese traders, while the outbound trade network was dominated by European traders. Similarly, sandalwood transportation and shipment were heavily influenced by West Timor's geography.

Abstract

The trend of cigar smoking in Europe around the 19th century had a significant impact on the Deli Sultanate in East Sumatra. This trend necessitated a substantial supply of tobacco in Europe to ensure continued enjoyment. One of the countries that played a crucial role in tobacco cultivation was the Dutch East Indies government. The Dutch chose to cultivate tobacco in East Sumatra because it was considered to have the natural resources and soil suitable for this cultivation. This study aims to determine the existence of the Deli Sultanate and the history of plantations in East Sumatra before 1864. It also aims to examine the development of tobacco plantations during the Deli Sultanate in East Sumatra between 1864 and 1924, as examined in terms of supply and demand from the European market. This study employed a historical research method consisting of four stages: heuristics, or the collection of primary and secondary sources; criticism, or the selection of sources, consisting of internal and external criticism; interpretation, or the interpretation of sources; and finally, historiography, the process of writing history. Based on the research that has been done, the Deli Malay Sultanate originated from the Aru Kingdom in the 13th century AD, which has played an important role in the history of the development of Medan City, especially since the opening of tobacco plantations in 1863. The reign of Sultan Mahmud Al-Rasyid marked the beginning of the progress of civilization in East Sumatra, with his approval of cooperation with the Dutch, namely Jacobus Nienhuys in the opening of tobacco plantations. High-quality Deli tea brought a significant economic impact, including a surge in demand from the European market in 1865. This development also influenced the social and economic structure of the Deli Sultanate as well as the European market. Modern infrastructure such as the railway and the Belawan port were built as a result of the expansion of tobacco plantations, while foreign companies also invested in the Deli region. The period 1864-1924 was marked by the leadership of Sultan Mahmud Al-Rasyid Perkasa Alamsyah and Sultan Makmun Al-Rasyid Perkasa Alamsyah where significant progress occurred in various existing fields.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of Sundanese storytellers in preserving the oral tradition of the Sundanese people in the 20th century by using historical methods. The historical methods used include heuristic stages, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. At the heuristic stage, various sources in the form of radio recordings, local media archives, fairy tale transcripts, character interviews, and performance documentation were collected to trace the activities of Sundanese storytellers. The results of the analysis showed that Sundanese storytellers play an important role as a transmitter of cultural values, language keepers, as well as a link between tradition and society in the context of modernization. Through historical interpretation, it is found that storytellers not only maintain the traditional form of fairy tales, but also adapt to the development of media such as radio, tapes, and social media today. Thus expanding the range of Sundanese oral culture. The results of this study confirmed that the gait of Sundanese storytellers has become a significant factor in maintaining the sustainability of oral traditions as the cultural identity of the Sundanese people.
