Abstract

The paper aims to investigate the kinds of metaphors found in the book Penyambung Lidah Rakyat Indonesia: An Autobiography of Soekarno, which is written based on the interview with Soekarno, the first president of Indonesia who pronounced proclamation of Indonesian independence. The identified metaphors are focused on the ones related to the concepts of leader and people. The categorizations are based on Lakoff and Johnson (2003) distinction of conceptual metaphor: structural, orientational, and ontological. The approach used in this study is qualitative. There are 28 data of metaphors related to the concepts of leader and people found in the autobiography book of Soekarno. Based on the analysis, it shows that the concepts of leader and people which are embodied in the metaphors are that leader is the backbone of a family; he/she is born from and raised by people, which inevitably belong to his people (as their property or what people belong to), and as the leader grows up, the offspring roles becomes more significant as the ear, mouth, and the extension of people’s tongue to the utmost. As much important as the leader is, people are also perceived as the nutrition and motor to make the leader alive and keep surviving.

Abstract

This study discusses the analysis of the flouting maxim using a YouTube video on the BBC Radio 1 YouTube channel "Kids ask Ryan Reynolds". The purpose of this study is to describe the flouting maxim and describe the function of the flouting maxim in a conversation in the video. Maxim is a part of pragmatics. The researchers get the data by analyzing the conversation or an interview in a YouTube video on the BBC Radio 1 YouTube channel "Kids ask Ryan Reynolds". The researchers used Grice's theory called the cooperative principle with four types of maxims: maxims of quantity, maxims of quality, maxims of relevance, and maxims of means. In this analysis using a conversation on the BBC Radio 1 YouTube video "Kids ask Ryan Reynolds", there are 8 data, 8 of which follow the maxim of relevance, and 1 data follow the maxim of quality. From each data, researchers could discover multiple flouted maxims in the conversation, up to 3 flouted maxims in each one. The consistently followed maxim in the video is the maxim of relevance because, throughout the video, Ryan always responds with a relevant topic. On the other hand, the most common and most consistently flouted maxim by Ryan Reynolds in the video is the maxim of manner.

Abstract

Sociolinguistics considers code mixing as an important area of study, particularly as a sign of bilingualism, where individuals use more than one language. Code-mixing transpires when individuals integrate different languages in their speech or sentences. The objective of this investigation is to recognize the varieties and motivations behind code-mixing as evidenced in a YouTube video by Fathia Izzati. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach to showcase the findings derived from the analysis of the data. In order to classify the forms of code-mixing, specifically intra-sentential, intra-lexical, and those involving a shift in pronunciation, the researchers utilize Hoffman's theory. The subject data consists of Fathia Izzati's utterances in a video titled "Realistically set & reach your goals" on her YouTube channel. The researchers discovered that the most frequently used type of code-mixing was inter-sentential code-mixing, accounting for 96% of the instances, and discussing a specific topic was the most common reason, representing 44% of the occurrences in the video. The implications of this study are presented in the form of an article, aiming to contribute new insights into the types and reasons for code-mixing usage.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types, speech functions, and reasons for code-switching found in the YouTube video of Jakarta Uncensored entitled “Kuliah Diluar Lulusnya Gampang?”. The data was collected through the library research method. The data of this study was obtained by accessing the YouTube channel of Jakarta Uncensored. There are several theories applied in this study. The first theory is the types of code-switching proposed by Poplack (1995), the second theory is the speech functions of code-switching proposed by Appel and Musyken (1987), and the last theory is the reasons for code-switching proposed by Hoffman (1991). Based on the result of the analysis, there are three types of code-switching found in the video, namely tag switching, inter-sentential switching, and intra-sentential switching. Out of six different speech functions, there were five speech functions of code-switching found in the video, they are referential, directive, expressive, phatic, and metalinguistic. The reasons behind the occurrence of code-switching in the video are mostly because the speakers feel more comfortable using one language rather than another. There is also an occasion when the speaker wants to be emphatic about something. Aside from those two reasons, there are also several interjections and the intention of clarifying something found in the video.

Abstract

Aphasia is a language disorder that is caused by the damage in the language processing areas of the brain, which is most commonly caused by stroke. The main study focus of this research is Broca’s aphasia. Broca’s aphasia is the type of aphasia caused by the damage in Broca’s area – the part of the human brain which function is related with speech production and located in the inferior frontal gyrus of the frontal lobe. Broca’s aphasia is known to impart the sufferers’ ability in expressing their thoughts in the correct syntactical manner. Therefore, this research aims to examine the syntactics of Sarah Scott’s and Mark Paulovich aphasic expressions in videos uploaded in the SymphUK and Mark Paulovich YouTube channels. The researchers utilize the descriptive qualitative method as research methodology, as the existing data are in form of two chosen verbal expressions by Sarah Scott and Mark Paulovich in two videos uploaded in the mentioned two YouTube channels. Moreover, the data analysis itself is done through determining the constituents by using phrase structure analysis as proposed by Fromkin, et al. (2014). The results of the study indicate that the chosen utterances contain the features of Broca’s aphasia, that are mainly visible through the disturbances in producing grammatical words and inflections; in setting of the more complex sentences; and the ordered subject-verb agreement, where in the same time still retain ability to express utterances with conceptual words (‘telegraphic speech’). Therefore, the researchers suggest that further research regarding aphasia is necessary, as a mean to increase our knowledge regarding the disease and human brain, and that the awareness to prevent aphasia and its associated medical conditions are raised among everyone, including the readers.

Abstract

This research focuses on students' language learning in 5th grade primary school. The research project examines on the language learning of 5th grade primary school learners.  The focus is to compare the linguistic skill of male and female learners by taking retelling stories using Indonesian language.  The factor used in this research is grammatical cohesion analysis which examines all grammatical aspects which includes sentence, clause, grammatical errors, emotive word, and interference. Data was gained through a controlled observation and analysed using the contrasting descriptive method which looks how male and female learners construct sentences and clauses, as well as the grammar mistakes they make.  5th grade male learners of Integrated Islamic Elementary School Al Abidin Surakarta were discovered to be more proficient in using Indonesian than female students were. Female students tend to make fewer grammatical errors than male learners when reciting Indonesian stories.  Male learners, on the other hand, are more imaginative and use emotive language frequently, indicating that male learners are more expressive while telling stories.  According to the data, male learners were more proficient in using Indonesian than female learners.  When narrating stories, female learners make fewer errors in grammar.  It also shows a lack of emotional connection.  It may be fair to say that male learners’ proficiency in telling stories is better than the female learners’ due to their expressiveness in telling the language but female learners are more structured in producing their language
