Abstract

This study examines the concept of illocutionary force in John Searles' speech act theory, with a particular focus on the directive aspect of illocutionary acts. The research seeks to completely examine directive illocutionary actions in the film's language using the film "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (Burton, 2016)" as the data source. Instances of directed illocutionary acts are recorded using targeted sampling, repeated viewings, meticulous observations, and note-taking. Using Searle's theory, a descriptive qualitative analysis categorizes and interprets the evidence. The results show that among the five investigated directed speech actions, questions are the most often (40%), followed by command, request, and prohibition (20% each). This work advances knowledge of speech acts in communication and media art by contributing to a thorough understanding of directed illocutionary actions in the cinema environment. It gives insights into communication dynamics by throwing light on the prevalence and categorization of directed speech actions. The findings of the study, as provided in tables, narrative descriptions, and illustrative examples, emphasize the importance of inquiries and other directing speech actions in both verbal and nonverbal communication. The ramifications of this work extend to a larger knowledge of speech actions, expanding our understanding of communication in many circumstances.

Abstract

Writing creative arts theses based on a social sciences model does not allow documentation of the creative process. The study examined content structuring of creative arts theses. The specific objectives were to examine creative arts lecturers’ views on students’ problems in thesis writing, analyse the content structuring of creative arts theses, and formulate a conceptual model of the content structure of the exegesis to accompany creative work. The study involved analysis of theses writing guidelines and the content of research methodology courses in two Malaysian universities offering creative arts academic programmes. The results showed recommendations on the conventional social science thesis structure with some space for the design processes. In addition, the analysis of 11 creative arts theses revealed confusion on the content structuring and student weaknesses in amassing research findings to contextualise the creative work. Based on the results, a conceptul model of creative arts exegesis with separate chapters for “Proposed final product and human factor issues” and “intellectual property documentation” was formulated and validated by creative arts lecturers. The exegesis model which builds in design processes and research processes would resolve issues on unclear expectations in creative arts students theses and elevate the significance of the creative work.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the types of imagery and the meaning of imagery in the White Swans album Cygnus. Ten songs by White Swan served as the data source. This study used an observational method to collect the data. In this study, a descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze the data. This study applied the theory proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) to find out the types of figurative language. To answer the second problem, this study used Leech's (1981) theory of meaning, which focused on analyzing the data source based on the types of meaning, such as conceptual meaning and connotative meaning. The result of this study shows that 20 dates contained imagery. Based on the analysis, this study found 6 types of imagery in the White Swan Cygnus album. There are 6 (30%) exaggeration data, 4 (20%) metaphor data, 4 (20%) personification data, 4 (20%) simile data, 1 (5%) metonymy data, and 1 (5%) data on the paradox. The results of this study are equally dominant imagery found in the Cygnus White Swan album such as B. Hyperbola with a total of 6 (30%). It can be found dominant as exaggerations used in context can enhance the ability to understand the message being sent by the speaker and generally convey the feelings or emotions. The results emphasize the album's symbolic representation and the significance of deciphering its meaning. This work expands our understanding of musical imagery and provides new directions for future investigation.

Abstract

The ASEAN Summit has become an interesting momentum and is in the spotlight because the views and attitudes of Southeast Asian leaders will be greatly reflected in the event. The 42nd ASEAN Summit is an attractive momentum considering Indonesia's status as the current Chairman of ASEAN, that this activity was also carried out in post-COVID-19 Pandemic conditions and Timor-Leste's first involvement as a candidate for a new ASEAN member. Focusing on the welcoming speech by President Joko Widodo at the Summit, this study uses a descriptive qualitative method using the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model developed by Norman Fairclough. This study conducts discourse analysis using three dimensions: text, discursive, and sociocultural analysis. The results of the analysis show that textually the speech delivered by President Joko Widodo uses the words 'I' and 'ASEAN' repeatedly. The term 'I' is generally in the function of hosting activities, and 'ASEAN' indicates a collective effort. Modality in the speech is also used to reinforce the vision of ASEAN. The socio-cultural analysis shows that the speech delivered by President Joko Widodo has characteristics to emphasize the current condition in the form of internal and external challenges. On the other hand, ideologically, President Joko Widodo stresses the message of exploring the potential in accordance with ASEAN's vision.

Abstract

The study explored both positive and negative sentiments towards artificial intelligence in language, focusing on study prompts using Chat GPT. The goal of this study is to understand how users perceive and judge AI in the context of language models such as Chat GPT. The research method used is qualitative descriptive, which focuses on prompts aimed at bringing up language facts. Data collection is carried out through a prompt submission which is then responded to by Chat GPT. Data analysis was carried out using a narrative analysis approach. It is intended to identify patterns of positive and negative sentiment in the responses given by Chat GPT. The results of the study showed that there was a Chat GPT response that led to positive and negative sentiment. The prompts "mohon" and "apakah" are some of the prompts that contain positive elements. The absence of these two prompts is an element in Chat GPT that leads to negative sentiment. The implications of this research are to provide insights for AI developers to improve the quality and acceptance of AI technologies in the future, as well as address existing concerns regarding privacy and accuracy.
