The students were given a pre-test to make a conversation involving asking and giving opinions. Then, the students received treatment using TikTok videos as a learning medium. Finally, the students took a post-test with the same material but on a different topic. The data analyzed included the average scores from the researcher as the first observer and the teacher as the second observer. The data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test through SPSS 16. The results obtained from SPSS 16 showed a significance value (Sig.) of 0.000 with α = 0.05, indicating that Ha was accepted because Sig. < α. Therefore, the study shows that TikTok significantly influences the speaking skills of eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 14 Bandar Lampung in the academic year 2023-2024.

Abstract

Many scholars believe that students who regularly listen to English podcasts receive positive feedback in learning English. This study aims to prove this belief and explore the relationship between students' podcast listening habits and their vocabulary skills. The researcher used a quantitative method with a correlational research approach. The sample was chosen using purposive sampling. A questionnaire was used to collect data on students' podcast listening habits, and a test was administered to assess their vocabulary mastery. The Pearson Product Moment formula was used for data analysis. The results showed that r_count (0.458) is greater than r_table (0.263), indicating a positive and moderate correlation between podcast listening and vocabulary mastery. The significant F change was 0.000, which is less than 0.05, further supporting the positive correlation. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a moderate correlation between students' habit of listening to English podcasts and their vocabulary mastery, meaning the more they listen, the better their vocabulary becomes.

Abstract

The motivation behind choosing this topic stems from the increasing importance of technology in education, particularly in teaching English as a foreign language. The researcher aims to explore the various instructional technology tools and resources used by English teachers. The objective of this research is to identify and understand the different types of technology employed in English language teaching and their effectiveness. This qualitative study focuses on two main concepts: the types of instructional technology tools and resources available, and their application in English language teaching. The subjects of the study are two English teachers from SMA Negeri 4 Bandar Lampung. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, which allowed for in-depth insights into the teachers' experiences and practices. The data collection involved recording and transcribing the interviews, followed by a thematic analysis. This method helped in identifying recurring themes and patterns in the data, which were then systematically organized and analyzed. The findings reveal that English teachers use a variety of technological tools such as projectors, laptops, sound systems, digital textbooks, and online platforms like YouTube and Instagram. These tools not only enhance teaching effectiveness but also increase student engagement and learning outcomes.

Abstract

The issue of homosexuality and LGBTQ+ themes is growing rapidly in literary works and other media. This research aims to describe the main characters and stages in identity formation in the Netflix series Heartstopper season 1. This research adopts descriptive qualitative methods and focuses on dialogue and scenes by Nick Nelson and Charlie Springs as the main characters. Data collection is done by observation and documentation techniques. The selected data will be analyzed by classifying them into each part of characterization and stage of identity formation, then interpreting them in a narrative form. By using M.J. Murphy's theory, researchers found that there are 8 of 9 methods that reveal the personality of the main characters: personal description, speech, character seen by another, past life, reactions, thoughts, mannerisms, and conversation of others, while there is no direct comment is found. By using Fassinger’s theory, researchers found that Nick went through 4 stages of identity formation: awareness, exploration, deepening, and internalization while Charlie had reached the internalization stage since the beginning of the show. The findings shed light on the characterization as an intrinsic element of literary work and the intricacies of adolescent identity formation, particularly in the context of LGBTQ+ experiences.

Abstract

Examines the film "The Big 4" Indonesia, outlining insights from the cultural perspective and the use of taboo words within the Indonesian context that most other research studies have ignored in their focus on Western movies and media. This study classifies taboo words into comprehensive divisions of form and functions based on established theories of sociolinguistic views by Wardhaugh (2006) and Batistella (2005). In this light, the following study unveiled a critical understanding of their use and perception within the Indonesian media. Further, the multilingual nature of the research highlights the existence of these tabooed words in Indonesian and English, Spanish, Hokkien, and Javanese languages, thus establishing the diversity of language use in Indonesian movies. The data were recorded through documentation by watching the film over Netflix, while taking notes during viewing of all expressions used with taboo words. Based on the data collection, there are 50 forms of taboo words found and used in the Indonesian film 'The Big 4' they are categorized into 17 data related to sex, 5 data related to death, 2 data related to excretion, 6 data related to bodily function; 7 data related to animals; 3 data related to cultural matters; and 10 data related to epithet. Then, the functions of using taboo words in the Indonesian film 'The Big 4' by Timo Tjahjanto are to draw attention to oneself, show contempt, be provocative, and mock authority. Almost all the players do all of them. In addition, implications of the findings point to other aspects that need further investigations on code-mixing, code-switching, and figurative language in Indonesian movies, which would open new research windows and urge more general analyses on the variation of languages in digital and media contexts. These unique features enhance our knowledge about the use of taboo language in Indonesian cinema and its broader implications.
