Abstract

The paper aims to investigate the kinds of metaphors found in the book Penyambung Lidah Rakyat Indonesia: An Autobiography of Soekarno, which is written based on the interview with Soekarno, the first president of Indonesia who pronounced proclamation of Indonesian independence. The identified metaphors are focused on the ones related to the concepts of leader and people. The categorizations are based on Lakoff and Johnson (2003) distinction of conceptual metaphor: structural, orientational, and ontological. The approach used in this study is qualitative. There are 28 data of metaphors related to the concepts of leader and people found in the autobiography book of Soekarno. Based on the analysis, it shows that the concepts of leader and people which are embodied in the metaphors are that leader is the backbone of a family; he/she is born from and raised by people, which inevitably belong to his people (as their property or what people belong to), and as the leader grows up, the offspring roles becomes more significant as the ear, mouth, and the extension of people’s tongue to the utmost. As much important as the leader is, people are also perceived as the nutrition and motor to make the leader alive and keep surviving.

Abstract

This study discusses the analysis of the flouting maxim using a YouTube video on the BBC Radio 1 YouTube channel "Kids ask Ryan Reynolds". The purpose of this study is to describe the flouting maxim and describe the function of the flouting maxim in a conversation in the video. Maxim is a part of pragmatics. The researchers get the data by analyzing the conversation or an interview in a YouTube video on the BBC Radio 1 YouTube channel "Kids ask Ryan Reynolds". The researchers used Grice's theory called the cooperative principle with four types of maxims: maxims of quantity, maxims of quality, maxims of relevance, and maxims of means. In this analysis using a conversation on the BBC Radio 1 YouTube video "Kids ask Ryan Reynolds", there are 8 data, 8 of which follow the maxim of relevance, and 1 data follow the maxim of quality. From each data, researchers could discover multiple flouted maxims in the conversation, up to 3 flouted maxims in each one. The consistently followed maxim in the video is the maxim of relevance because, throughout the video, Ryan always responds with a relevant topic. On the other hand, the most common and most consistently flouted maxim by Ryan Reynolds in the video is the maxim of manner.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the sign and also explain the message conveyed by the COVID-19 poster from the Facebook account of World Health Organization South-East Asia Region – WHO SEARO. The source of the data was downloaded from the Facebook account. The researchers used several methods for analyzing the data. There are three theories used in this study. The first one is the theory of meaning by Barthes (in Chandler, 2000) which consists of denotative meaning and connotative meaning. The second theory is the visual aspect and verbal aspect by Dyer (1986) and the last one is the theory of color terms by Wierzbicka (1998). The researchers analyzed two posters from the WHO SEARO Facebook account by using descriptive qualitative method. The result of this study shows that data 1 has 6 visual signs and 5 verbal signs and data 2 consists of 5 visual signs and also 5 verbal signs. Besides visual and verbal signs, the posters also contain the denotative and connotative meanings. In analyzing the connotative meaning, it is also related to the analysis of color term.

Abstract

The practice of translanguaging in Indonesian songs by Indonesian singers is the primary focus of this paper. The objectives of the study are to categorize the types of translanguaging strategies used in songs, analyze how translanguaging is employed, and investigate why Indonesian artists use translanguaging in their songs. Using the qualitative method, this current study presents the translanguaging practice of the selected singer and its song. Weird Genius and Sara Fajira's song "Lathi," Atta Halilintar and Aurel Hermansyah's song "Hari Bahagia," Via Vallen's song "Holiday," Voice of Baceprot's song "School Revolution," and Bondan Prakoso and Fade 2 Black's song "Ya Sudahlah" are among the songs that are used as the sample of this study. The theory of Lucy Tse (1996) is used to identify the type of translanguaging and how to apply trans-languaging itself. Meanwhile, Charlotte Hoffman (1991) is used to examine the reason for using translanguaging. The results of the study showed that the 20 data used the same type of translanguaging, namely code-switching. In addition, this study also found the 20 data applied translanguaging in the same way, namely, using more than one language in one song and switching them from one lyric to another. The writer also found that showing group identity revealed the reason why Indonesian singers used translanguaging in their songs.

Results indicated reduced clause (20%) was the most difficult questions to students, followed by subject-verb agreement (13%), parallel structures (13%), comparisons (13%), pronouns (9%), and coordinating conjunctions (9%). It was also found Part B to be more difficult than Part A because it was harder to spot the mistakes in a sentence than it was to complete the sentence from multiple choices. Additionally, the results also revealed that reasons affecting the difficulties in answering the topics namely lack of knowledge and preparation, time management, and lack of vocabularies. Therefore, TOEFL teachers and trainers are strongly encouraged to pay more attention to the six topic study exercises with the highest error percentage, and to train students with various exercises in order to get used to the actual test.

Abstract

Formula-E, which was successfully held in Jakarta, Indonesia, gave rise to various reports. This linguistics study aims to analyze the purpose of online media coverage about 'dukungan pemerintah' on the Formula-E event, which took place on Saturday, 4 June 2022. The data  were taken from online media portals Bisnis.com, CNN, Detik, Kompas, Pikiran Rakyat, and Tribunnews. There are 108 articles analyzed in this study. The articles were scrapped from the same day when the Formula E was held. The data that are sentences from the articles were analyzed using a corpus approach to find words 'dukungan’ (support) and 'pemerintah' (government) using concordances. The data discussed using Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis theory to reveal its meaning. The results found that the macrostructure is government support for the 2022 Formula-E. Then the superstructure of the six media uses a framework that matches the title and content. In the microstructure, 'dukungan' and 'pemerintah' concordances were found. Analysis of social cognition found that online media portals show partiality. The media that is most likely to support the government is CNN. It can be seen from the chosen language, which tends to provide evidence that the central government has supported this event. Meanwhile, the media that seemed to criticize the government's support was Tribunnews by presenting the figure of Joko Suranto as one of the Indonesian citizens who sponsored this event rather than central government. The social context to be achieved is that online media tend to show their side with the government by not choosing words that discredit the government.
