Abstract

The study entitled Discourse Analysis on the Indonesian Court Exception News Allowing Gibran to Run in the Presidential Election is a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of how British newspapers, i.e., Reuters and The Guardian reported what the Constitutional Court (Mahkamah Konstitusi/MK) issued on the eligibility criteria for the president and vice president. The study is aimed at elaborating on the discourse side of the news articles by using Norman Fairclough's CDA with three dimensions: text analysis, discourse practice analysis, and social analysis. This study applies descriptive research by understanding the article and reading other supporting information. The linguistic study can be linked to the social analysis by the last element of CDA, which is sociocultural analysis. This explains the result of text analysis and discourse practice in the news report which mostly describes the controversy and impact of the court’s decision that ruled that candidates under the required age of 40 could seek the presidency or vice presidency in the 2024 election, provided they have previously held elected regional office. The study provides insights into how British newspapers framed and interpreted the Indonesian Constitutional Court's decision on presidential candidacy eligibility, highlighting implications for media representation and public discourse.

Abstract

The motivation behind this research stems from the observed challenges faced by high school students in mastering English grammar, particularly in writing. This study investigates the grammatical errors frequently made by tenth-grade students in their descriptive writing at Al Ghozali Senior High School, Gunung Sindur, Bogor. The primary objective is to analyze these errors to understand their nature and frequency, providing insights for more effective teaching strategies. This descriptive research utilizes a documentary analysis method, focusing on students' written works. The research subjects are tenth-grade students at Al Ghozali Senior High School. Data collection involved gathering students' descriptive essays, which were then analyzed using a checklist of common grammatical errors adapted from La Trobe University. The checklist includes categories such as subject-verb agreement, verb tense, word class, vocabulary, singular/plural, articles, sentence structure, spelling, and punctuation. Data analysis revealed that the most frequent errors involved subject-verb agreement (94.47%), followed by verb tense (66.66%) and word class (57.14%). Other common errors included vocabulary usage, singular/plural distinctions, and article usage. These findings highlight specific areas where students struggle the most, providing valuable information for educators. The implications of this research suggest that targeted interventions and continuous practice are essential for improving students' grammatical skills in writing. By addressing the identified errors, teachers can enhance their instructional methods, ultimately helping students achieve better proficiency in English writing. This study not only benefits students and teachers at Al Ghozali Senior High School but also offers insights for future research in similar educational contexts.

Abstract

This article explores the depiction or reflection of women through various signs that contain meaning, namely language and visual communication aimed at the general public (consumers in an advertisement). This study aims to discuss the visual and linguistic elements in advertising. In addition, this study reveals the interaction of these elements to create an image of feminine meaning which is defined as feminine, regarding or resembling women. The data are beauty advertisements from Jafra, such as face masks, facial serums, foundations or powders, lipsticks, and perfumes. This study uses Charles Sanders Pierce’s semiotic analysis to translate the meaning of symbols in advertisements for JAFRA women’s beauty products. According to Peirce, a set of semiotics consisting of three main elements is called the triangle theory of meaning (sign, context, and meaning). This study uses a qualitative descriptive objective to provide a systematic, factual, and accurate description of certain facts. The results of this study indicate that in advertisements for JAFRA women’s beauty products, femininity is represented by the visual appearance of the model (person) used, behavior, clothing, poses in the picture, long hair loose, use of image background, colors, displayed, the typeface used in the advertisement image, graceful, spoiled, sexy, flirty and sensitive side of women's femininity, self-expression such as applying makeup, taking care of the face, and body in the picture ads displayed.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of non-observance maxims that trigger implicatures in the interview with Ganjar Pranowo, a prominent political figure in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative approach, the primary data source utilized was Youtube video of the exclusive interview with Ganjar Pranowo by TvOne, which were transcribed for analysis. Drawing on Grice's theory of conversational implicature, highlighting the implicit meanings conveyed through deviations from the four maxims of effective communication: quantity, quality, relation, and manner, this research delves into Ganjar Pranowo's communication strategies, particularly focusing on deviations from the cooperative principles in communication. This study reveals that Ganjar Pranowo frequently employs particularized implicatures to convey additional messages beyond the literal meaning of his words. This approach not only adds layers of meaning but also showcases the strategic use of language to imply information indirectly. Additionally, the study identifies instances where Ganjar Pranowo deliberately limits the information provided during interviews, further complicating the interpretative process for listeners. These findings illustrate the complexity of human communication dynamics, where implied messages and implicit communication strategies significantly influence the understanding of spoken words. This study offers profound insights into Ganjar Pranowo's adept use of language and implicatures to communicate nuanced messages. It highlights the intricacies of human communication processes and the subtle dynamics of interaction between speakers, emphasizing the importance of context and inference in effective communication.

Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing grammatical errors in comparison and contrast paragraphs written by second-semester students of the English Department at Universitas Pamulang. Grammatical errors often occur in students' writing when the grammatical arrangement does not follow grammar rules. The main purposes of the research were to identify the types of grammatical errors and to describe the most frequent types of grammatical errors found in students' writing of comparison and contrast paragraphs. This research was carried out from October 2023 to June 2024 and used a qualitative descriptive research design. The subjects of the research were the twenty comparison and contrast paragraphs written by the students as a writing assignment. The data were collected from the original students' writing products, and the data were observed to find grammatical errors and classify the types of errors. Furthermore, the most frequent type of grammatical error was also calculated. The researcher analyzed the types of grammatical errors in students' writing based on Dulay, Burt, and Krashen's theory. The results showed that there were 127 grammatical errors, which were classified into 47 omission errors, 35 addition errors, 30 misformation errors, and 15 misordering errors. Additionally, the most frequent type of grammatical error was omission errors, which accounted for 37% of the total errors and had the highest percentage. The results of this research have implications for understanding strategies to address students' grammatical problems when they are producing text.

Abstract

Generation Z has become increasingly interested in seeking information on online platforms. As a result, numerous new terms begin to appear in society. New terms used in a language can be related to the word formation process, one of the morphological branches of linguistics. This study explored the process of word formation in online news articles, precisely the analysis section of opinion articles in the Jakarta Post online newspaper which ran from November 2023 to January 2024. In addition, this study aimed to provide several learning implications. The research design was descriptive qualitative because this study used discourse and morphological elements. Yule's (2017) theory was used to identify and classify the data into word formation categories. There were two findings of this study. First, the analysis revealed derivation as the most frequently used process in online news articles, accounting for 124 (33,42 %) and other processes such as multiple processes 80 (21,56 %), compounding 77 (20,75 %), acronym 64 (17,25 %), blending 7 (1,89 %), clipping 6 (1,62 %), borrowing 5 (1,35 %), conversion 6 (1,62 %), coinage 1 (0,27%), and back-formation 1 (0,27%). The second finding of this study revealed some important learning implications, such as increasing awareness of word structure, improving vocabulary, enhancing reading and writing skills, fostering creativity, and boosting cultural and digital literacy. Analyzing word formation processes helps language learners understand and decode complex texts, which supports overall literacy development. Therefore, language learners should engage in this activity to gain a thorough understanding of how language evolves and functions.

Abstract

This study investigated the correlation between the use of translation technology and the translation skills of students in the English Education Study Program at UIN Raden Intan Lampung. Employing a quantitative correlational research design, the research focused on a sample of 40 students from a Translation and Interpretation course. Data collection involved a translation test to assess students' proficiency and a questionnaire to measure the frequency and reliance on translation tools. Analysis using SPSS revealed a moderate positive correlation of 0.35 between the use of translation technology and translation skills, indicating that while technology aids in improving translation performance, it is not the only factor influencing students' abilities. Other elements, such as individual learning strategies and language proficiency, also play critical roles. The findings suggest that although translation tools are beneficial in language learning, they should be used in conjunction with traditional methods to prevent over-reliance. Educators are encouraged to promote manual translation exercises to foster deeper comprehension and skill development. However, the study's limitations, including its small sample size and focus on a single institution, may limit the generalizability of the results. Future research should consider larger, more diverse samples and explore the long-term effects of translation technology on student proficiency, offering broader insights into its impact on language education.
