Abstract

The rapid development of the era impacts the sustainability of language and culture, including the lexicons in Balinese rituals. The young generation's indifference to using lexicons will result in language death which can threaten the community's cultural identity. However, studies on the lexicons used in Balinese rituals, particularly the tooth-filing ritual (Metatah), remain limited. While some research has explored the ritual's procedures, there is still a gap in identifying and analyzing the specific lexicons used. This study aims to identify the lexicons used in the procedures of the Metatah ritual in Menyali Village and analyze the cultural meaning of the identified lexicons. The ethnolinguistic perspective is used to examine the relationship between language and culture. This study was used a qualitative descriptive design. Observation and interviews with three selected informants were conducted to collect the data. The instruments used in this study were the researcher, observation sheets, interview guides, interview sheets, smartphones, and notebooks. This study employed an interactive data analysis model, consisting of three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing or verification. The study results show that the Metatah ritual consists of ten procedures, with a total of thirty-five (35) lexicons used in all of these procedures. These lexicons represent the activities, tools, materials, and offerings involved in the ritual. The obtained lexicons carry cultural meanings that reflect the traditions and beliefs of the Menyali people, connected to the concept of Tri Hita Karana. The findings of this study underline the importance of maintaining the lexicons in the Metatah ritual as a source of cultural knowledge to maintain a community's identity. Thus, this study can have implications in linguistic studies as an effort to preserve the Balinese language.

Abstract

This paper investigates the interpersonal functions in the discourse of the Berkeley Exec Ed podcast, specifically the episode "The Science of Happiness & the Greater Good," using the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework. It explores how language functions in interaction, conveys information, and entertains the audience by applying speech functions and mood types. A qualitative approach is used to analyze clause separations in the podcast transcript, which are then categorized based on speech functions—such as statements, questions, commands, and offers—and their corresponding moods: declarative, interrogative, and imperative. Most of the interactions (58.1%) are realized through statements using declarative moods. This trend indicates that the hosts aim to present information in a manner that is authoritative and informative, thereby building credibility and trust. Other functions include questioning (11.6%) and inviting (16.3%), which utilize interrogative and imperative moods, respectively, to encourage audience participation and engagement. This strategic interplay of linguistic elements demonstrates how speech functions and mood types contribute to the dynamism, interactivity, and effectiveness of the podcast discourse. The study highlights the crucial role of interpersonal language functions in fostering meaningful connections and maintaining audience interest in podcast formats. It also offers insights that can inform broader practices in media communication and content creation

Abstract

This study aims to examine in depth how speech act theory is applied in various communication contexts and to explore linguists' perspectives regarding this theory. A qualitative method was employed through a literature review approach, which included several stages: data collection, analysis, and validation. The data were gathered from relevant literature, both printed and digital, about the concepts of speech acts and pragmatics. This study investigates the role of speech acts in shaping the understanding of social interaction dynamics and the cultural values embedded within them. The findings indicate that speech acts function as instruments for performing communicative actions. In this context, a speaker's utterance carries a specific intention or meaning, recognizing that people do not speak without purpose. Various descriptive terms are used to illustrate the communicative intent behind utterances. Understanding speech acts is relevant to linguistic analysis and has practical applications in enhancing communication effectiveness across diverse social and cultural settings.

Abstract

To understand the meaning of a text or work of art can use a hermeneutic approach. This study aims to interpret the meaning in the lyrics of a Minangkabau folk song titled "Pasan Mandeh" with a hermeneutic approach using Paul Ricoeur's theory, which outlines the steps of understanding by starting from semantic, reflexive, and existential Understanding. Ricoeur's theory was chosen because of several distinctive reasons not shared by other figures, namely Ricoeur rejected hermeneutics as a rigid and objective method. Ricoeur viewed the text as an autonomous entity independent of the author's intention, so that readers have the space to creatively appropriate meaning but are still limited by the content of the text. The research method uses a literature study and interviews. The results of the study found that the first is a semantic understanding that contains a literal understanding of meaning, and it is not deep, as in the song lyrics, where there is the use of symbols that describe the beauty of nature and life. Second is a reflexive understanding that examines meaning by adjusting the cultural context, such as using "Kato Malereang" in everyday life. The third is an existential understanding that reflects on the meaning of the song lyrics and applies the moral messages and life values channeled by the author through the song lyrics.

Abstract

In response to the limitations of traditional reading instruction, this study explores the impact of the flipped classroom model on the reading comprehension achievement of first-semester English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students in higher education. While previous research has highlighted the benefits of flipped learning in writing instruction, limited empirical studies have examined its effectiveness for reading comprehension, particularly among university-level EFL learners in the Indonesian context. Addressing this gap, the present study employed a quasi-experimental design involving 60 first-semester students at STKIP Muhammadiyah Pagaralam. Participants were divided into two intact classes: an experimental group (n = 30) receiving instruction through the flipped classroom model, and a control group (n = 30) taught using conventional methods. The instructional intervention spanned 16 meetings. A reading comprehension test served as the research instrument, validated by expert judgment and piloted to ensure reliability (Cronbach’s α = 0.83). Data were collected through pretests and posttests administered to both groups. Descriptive statistics and independent samples t-tests were used to analyze the data. Results indicated a significant difference in posttest scores between the groups, with the experimental group achieving a higher mean gain (18.5 points) compared to the control group (9.4 points), suggesting the flipped classroom model effectively enhanced reading comprehension. The study implies that integrating pre-class digital content with in-class active learning can significantly improve reading outcomes in EFL contexts. It recommends wider adoption of flipped learning in higher education and encourages further research on long-term impacts and learner engagement strategies.

Abstract

Pragmatics is the study of the meaning of conversations, which occurs based on the context and the situation. This study focuses on analyzing the flouting maxim in the Barbie (2023) movie. The researcher aims to identify the types of flouting maxims in the conversations carried out by the characters in the Barbie (2023) movie, and also to capture the implied meaning of what is conveyed through the flouting maxim. This study uses Grice's grand theory, namely the cooperative principle (1975). This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. Meanwhile, the movie and its transcript are used as data sources. The researcher serves as the main instrument in this research. In collecting data, the researcher watched the movie, identified the dialogues that contained flouting maxims, classified them based on the types of flouting maxims, and analyzed their implicatures based on the context of the conversation. Although many studies have discussed Gricean maxims, limited research has focused on how characters in recent popular movies flout maxims to express hidden meanings. The results of this research show that there are four types of flouting maxims in the movie, with a total of 27 data found. Those are flouting maxim of quantity, it was found 6 times; flouting maxim of quality, it was found 12 times; flouting maxim of relation, it was found 7 times; and flouting maxim of manner, it was found 2 times. Researchers also found the implicature of the flouting maxim used by the characters in the Barbie (2023) movie. These findings are expected to help readers understand how pragmatic strategies can reveal implied messages in fictional conversations

Abstract

This study investigates the use of evaluative language in CNN International's headlines reporting on the legal case of American rapper Sean 'Diddy' Combs through the dual theoretical lenses of Martin and White's (2005) Appraisal System and Van Dijk's theory of ideological discourse. Applying a qualitative descriptive method and discourse analysis approach, we analyzed 31 headlines published from September to December 2024 using the Attitude subsystem's three categories: Judgment, Appreciation, and Affect. The findings reveal a striking dominance of Judgment (88%), particularly within the Social Sanction domain, demonstrating CNN's systematic framing of Combs through legal and moral evaluations. Appreciation (8%) and Affect (4%) appear minimally, relegated to passing references to cultural influence or emotionally charged victim quotes. This evaluative pattern aligns with Van Dijk's concept of ideological bias in media discourse, showing how CNN's linguistic choices construct a criminalized image of Combs before legal resolution. The analysis demonstrates how 88% Judgment-based language, predominantly negative, reinforces dominant moral discourses while marginalizing Combs' cultural contributions (Appreciation) and emotional complexity (Affect). These findings illuminate the media's power to shape public perception through strategic linguistic framing, highlighting the need for critical engagement with news discourse, particularly in high-profile cases where media narratives may precede judicial outcomes.
