Abstract

This study explores the utilization of Instagram as a social media platform in political campaigns during the Medan Governor Election, applying the principles of framing theory. The primary aim is to investigate how gubernatorial candidates construct and disseminate their political messages through visual and textual content to shape voter perceptions. Anchored in Erving Goffman’s (1974) framing theory, the study examines how candidates selectively emphasize and organize information to influence audience interpretation. By employing Instagram features such as posts, stories, and interactive elements, candidates seek to craft their public image, underscore key issues, and engage voters effectively. The findings indicate that Instagram functions as a pivotal tool for shaping public opinion and increasing candidates' visibility in the context of digital media-driven political campaigns. This research underscores the importance of strategic social media use in modern political communication, highlighting its potential to redefine voter engagement and public discourse

Abstract

This study examines the phonetic and stylistic elements of "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen, a song renowned for its distinctive structure and complex themes. It redirects attention from the previously explored cultural, narrative, and biographical elements to investigate the overlooked phonological characteristics that contribute to its aesthetic and emotional resonance. Employing a qualitative methodology, the song’s lyrics were transcribed phonetically using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to identify dominant consonants and vowels. The results indicate that consonants such as /d/, /s/, /l/, and /n/, along with vowels such as /ɪ/, /ə/, and /aɪ/, play a crucial role in defining the sound quality of the lyrics. These phonological features enhance the song's musicality while emphasizing its narrative tension and emotional depth. The interplay of these sounds creates a dynamic auditory experience that aligns with the song’s shifting emotional landscapes. The study concludes that the phonological elements in Bohemian Rhapsody function as integral carriers of meaning, enriching its thematic and emotional layers. This research bridges linguistic analysis with musical narrative, demonstrating how phono-stylistics can uncover the deeper aspects of iconic musical texts and fostering interdisciplinary dialogue in linguistics, musicology, and cultural studies. The findings imply that similar approaches can be applied to other complex musical compositions, opening new avenues for analyzing the interplay between language and music in various cultural contexts

Abstract

This study applies Bhatia's Critical Genre Analysis (CGA) framework to analyze promotional posters from four salad brands—SaladPoint, SaladStop!, Hijoo Salad Bar, and The Roots. It examines how textual, visual, and interactive resources are integrated to communicate brand messages and engage health-conscious audiences effectively. By focusing on genre features like audience targeting, multimodal resources, and interdiscursivity, the study reveals how these strategies align with consumer priorities such as health, convenience, and lifestyle. The analysis shows that the brands use bold typography, vibrant imagery, and strategic calls to action to craft persuasive advertisements. Features like bright colors, fresh ingredients, and friendly language appeal to the health-conscious demographic, promoting a sense of ease and community. Interactive elements such as QR codes and social media handles further enhance consumer engagement. These multimodal strategies work cohesively to convey the brands' ethos and strengthen their appeal. The findings emphasize the importance of Bhatia’s CGA framework in understanding promotional communications, particularly in industries where consumer choices are shaped by perceptions of health, quality, and brand image. Effective advertisements must balance visual, verbal, and interactive elements to resonate with target audiences. This study offers actionable insights for optimizing advertising strategies in the competitive food industry, highlighting the need for cohesive multimodal approaches to boost consumer engagement and brand identity. It also contributes to broader discussions on multimodality and genre in advertising, providing a methodological framework for analyzing promotional materials

Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify and interpret both verbal and non-verbal signs within various advertisements, exploring their denotative and connotative meanings. This study employed a qualitative approach to analyze 40 fast-food advertisements from five globally recognized brands: Subway, Burger King, KFC, Pizza Hut, and McDonald's. Data collection involved identifying advertisements, reading the text, downloading images, and underlining key words, sentences, and phrases. The data were analyzed by: (1) categorizing the signs in the advertisements into two types—verbal and non-verbal; (2) analyzing the denotative and connotative meanings of these signs using theories from Barthes (1977) and Luzar & Monica (2011); and (3) drawing conclusions based on the identified denotative and connotative meanings. The selection of Barthes’ theory was aligned with the study's objective. The findings revealed a rich tapestry of signs employed to attract attention, convey messages, and persuade consumers. The results indicated the presence of 91 verbal signs, including slogans, product names, notices, and the use of capital letters, and 90 non-verbal signs, such as logos, colors, illustrations, and human imagery, within the advertisements.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze about superstition as one of the characteristics of Chinese literature and how superstition is part of patriarchal agenda in oppressing women depicted in Ling Shuhua’s “Mid-Autumn Eve” translated by Marie Chan. Superstition is often manifested in Asian literature because it is part of Asian culture. By analyzing Ling Shuhua’s “The Mid-autumn Eve”, the research finds out that modern Chinese society still believes in the superstition, such as “harmony duck” that symbolizing the prosperity and eternal love; for instance, how the couple who eat the “harmony duck” in the Mid-autumn festival will live together forever. Therefore, T’ai-t’ai forces her husband to eat the duck because she is afraid that his failure in eating the duck will be an ill omen for their marriage. Through feminist perspective, superstition can lead women to fall into the trap of patriarchy. By believing in superstition, women are associated with ignorance, stupidity, and weak that needs to be excluded in men’s matter, such as decision making. In the case of Cheng-jen for instance, by letting T’ai-t’ai, her wife, takes a decision that is based on superstition, Cheng-jen faces big regret in his life; he cannot be together with his foster sister before she dies

Abstract

Pidgins and creoles are two unique language forms, born out of linguistic contact in various global contexts, including trade, colonialism and migration. Pidgins evolved as simple means of communication between speakers of different languages, while creoles emerged when pidgins became the mother tongue of certain communities, expanding their grammatical complexity and vocabulary. The aim of the research is to analyze the evolution of pidgin and creole languages globally, including the problems, procedures, relationships of activities, attitudes, views, and influences of certain phenomena. The research compares the evolution of pidgins and creoles globally, exploring the processes of pidginization, creolization, and their distribution and characteristics in different regions. It highlights the social and linguistic dynamics underlying the formation of these languages, while demonstrating the significant role of pidgins and creoles in understanding the evolution of human language. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods to accurately describe facts and situations in society. The research methods include a literature study, where researchers collect data from secondary sources such as books and journals, as well as a historical approach that reviews the development of pidgins and creoles in the context of trade, colonialism and migration. This approach allowed for an in-depth exploration of relevant linguistic and socio-cultural data. The results of this analysis provide deep insights into the relationship between language, culture and history in a changing global context.

Abstract

Thesis hearing invitations are formal academic documents that follow a specific structure and language that reflect institutional norms and adhere to academic communication standards. This study analyzes the rhetorical structure and interpersonal meta-functions in thesis hearing invitations at the University of Sumatera Utara (USU) and how the invitation reflects the professional culture of academic communication. This research uses Critical Genre Analysis (CGA) to explore the structural components and language choices in the invitation, as well as investigate how academic norms are communicated through formal documents. The findings reveal that all thesis hearing invitations consist of four main moves: opening, purpose, content, and closing. However, the number of steps in each move is different. In the invitations, the dominant use of declarative mood emphasizes precise and formal information delivery, typical of academic communication. In addition, the uniformity of the template and the use of formal language according to Indonesian rules emphasize the importance of administrative consistency and professional culture at USU. These practices also reflect a professional culture where clarity, formality, and uniformity are prioritized. Ultimately, this study underscores the value of genre analysis in understanding how genre-specific structures contribute to the effectiveness of academic communication and how they embody institutional values.

Abstract

Amid escalating global environmental crises, environmental images in movies play an indispensable role in shaping public consciousness and attitudes toward ecological challenges. This study investigates the portrayal of environmental ethics in the film Don’t Look Up (2021) through Kerafian ethical analysis. As environmental degradation intensifies, cinematic media emerges as a pivotal force in fostering awareness and influencing public perceptions. A qualitative content analysis was conducted, analyzing key scenes and dialogues to identify and interpret ethical themes in the film, guided by the theoretical constructs from Keraf (2010) to extract and categorize ethical themes. Through the analysis of key scenes and dialogues, the study elucidates how these principles manifest, offering a critique of humanity’s inadequate response to ecological threats. Data were collected through a systematic examination of the film’s narrative, focusing on the integration of core ethical principles, including responsibility, cosmic solidarity, compassion for nature, justice, and democracy (Keraf, 2010). The findings reveal that the film emphasizes collective action, moral accountability, and the urgency of environmental preservation, while simultaneously critiquing political inertia and self-interest. The study underscores the potential of cinematic media to enhance environmental awareness and mobilize public attitudes, positioning Don’t Look Up as a compelling narrative that critiques humanity’s inadequate response to ecological threats
