Abstract

This study examines the formation of neologisms in English-language digital media, focusing on the technology news platforms TechCrunch and Wired. Using O’Grady & Guzman (1996) morphological framework, this study identifies five main word formation processes: compounding, word blending, derivation, acronyms, and conversion. These processes are analyzed qualitatively through 10 neologisms extracted from both media. TechCrunch and Wired were selected due to their central role in documenting and popularizing technological innovations and terminology. The findings show that derivation and compounding are the most dominant patterns, indicating that morphological creativity in a technology-driven context is highly dependent on simplicity and clarity. These results highlight the dynamic relationship between linguistic innovation and technological development, suggesting that neologisms not only reflect lexical changes but also serve as tools to accommodate emerging digital realities.

Abstract

Pragmatics is the study of the meaning of conversations, which occurs based on the context and the situation. This study focuses on analyzing the flouting maxim in the Barbie (2023) movie. The researcher aims to identify the types of flouting maxims in the conversations carried out by the characters in the Barbie (2023) movie, and also to capture the implied meaning of what is conveyed through the flouting maxim. This study uses Grice's grand theory, namely the cooperative principle (1975). This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. Meanwhile, the movie and its transcript are used as data sources. The researcher serves as the main instrument in this research. In collecting data, the researcher watched the movie, identified the dialogues that contained flouting maxims, classified them based on the types of flouting maxims, and analyzed their implicatures based on the context of the conversation. Although many studies have discussed Gricean maxims, limited research has focused on how characters in recent popular movies flout maxims to express hidden meanings. The results of this research show that there are four types of flouting maxims in the movie, with a total of 27 data found. Those are flouting maxim of quantity, it was found 6 times; flouting maxim of quality, it was found 12 times; flouting maxim of relation, it was found 7 times; and flouting maxim of manner, it was found 2 times. Researchers also found the implicature of the flouting maxim used by the characters in the Barbie (2023) movie. These findings are expected to help readers understand how pragmatic strategies can reveal implied messages in fictional conversations.

Abstract

This study discusses the use of code-mixing between English and Indonesian in Livy Renata's YouTube video entitled “meeting Reemar for the first time!”. Using a sociolinguistic approach, this study analyzes the types of code-mixing and viewers' perspectives on its use. This phenomenon is relevant because it reflects bilingualism in Indonesian society as well as the influence of social media in shaping linguistic perceptions in the digital era. The data used are collected from code-mixing utterances by the speakers using a content analysis method. The researchers adjust the video transcription that is displayed in English with all the speakers’ utterances, which partly use Bahasa Indonesia. The results show that insertional code-mixing is the most frequently used type, accounting for 40% of the total. Alternation comes next at 33.3%, while the remaining 26.7% includes congruent lexicalization. As stated by Geroda & Yeusy (2022), the use of insertional code-mixing means that the speakers want to show their social identity. In addition, it is also used to attract the attention of the viewers who are mostly Indonesians. With this, the use of code-mixing in the video receives positive and negative responses, which can be seen in the comments section. These viewers' responses are differentiated based on language attitudes theory, whether they are positive cognitive, positive affective, negative cognitive, or negative affective. Based on the viewers' comments, the use of code-mixing by the speakers is mostly perceived positively.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of swear words by South Koreans, particularly those residing or traveling in Bali, Indonesia. It adopts a descriptive qualitative design to identify the forms, functions, and references of swear words used in the Korean language (Hangugeo). Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with both primary and secondary informants, including South Korean tourists and expatriates. The study employs the Miles and Huberman (1994) model for data analysis, which includes data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that 26 swear words are commonly used by South Koreans, categorized into monomorphemic (8), polymorphemic (17), and phrase forms (2). Functionally, the words are distributed across five categories: expletives, abusive, humoristic, euphemistic, and habitual usage. Additionally, the study classifies these swear words into eight reference categories: circumstance, animal, object, body part, kinship, spirit, activity, and profession. The results highlight that swearing in Korean serves not only as emotional release or aggression but also functions in humor and habitual speech. Moreover, the findings underscore the importance of cultural sensitivity in intercultural communication, as swear words can be easily misunderstood across linguistic and cultural boundaries. In multicultural settings such as Bali, where Korean tourists frequently interact with locals, misinterpretations of such expressions can lead to social tension. Therefore, this research emphasizes the need for heightened awareness of sociolinguistic differences to foster respectful and effective communication in globalized environments.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of women's empowerment in Birds of Prey (2020), directed by Cathy Yan. It focuses on the narrative development of the central female characters Harley Quinn, Black Canary, Huntress, and Renee Montoya as they navigate processes of self-assertion, autonomy, and resistance. Employing a qualitative methodology through thematic analysis, the research applies Naila Kabeer’s empowerment framework, which conceptualizes empowerment through three interconnected dimensions: resources, agency, and achievements. The analysis reveals that each protagonist experiences empowerment through distinct personal trajectories. Harley Quinn reclaims her independence following her separation from the Joker. Black Canary asserts her voice and defends others against systemic violence. Huntress converts past trauma into a source of strength. Renee Montoya rejects institutional constraints to act in alignment with her ethical convictions. The film underscores the transformative power of female solidarity and emphasizes that empowerment is a multifaceted construct, expressed through diverse forms of strength, independence, and resilience.

Abstract

This study explores topic continuity in the British Council Kids’ adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood, focusing on how cohesive devices contribute to coherence in children’s narrative texts. The main objective is to identify and analyze the use of zero pronouns, definite pronouns, indefinite pronouns, third-person pronouns, and possessive pronouns in maintaining topic continuity throughout the story. Employing a qualitative content analysis, the text was segmented into clauses and each relevant linguistic device was coded and examined. Givón’s (1983) framework was applied to measure referential distance, potential interference, and persistence for each device, providing a comprehensive assessment of topic continuity. The findings reveal that definite and third-person pronouns are the most frequently used cohesive devices, with referents usually introduced within one or two clauses, ensuring strong topic tracking and narrative coherence. Zero anaphora is also present, supporting efficient reference maintenance with minimal distance and manageable interference. Notably, the analysis found no instances of indefinite pronouns, indicating a clear focus on specific references throughout the text. Possessive pronouns further clarify relationships and ownership, enhancing textual cohesion. The results show that referential distance and potential interference are generally low, while persistence varies according to narrative focus, reflecting shifts in character relevance. Overall, the study demonstrates that the narrative employs a range of cohesive strategies to maintain topic continuity, which is essential for supporting comprehension and engagement among young readers. These insights offer valuable implications for educators and material developers in designing accessible and coherent reading resources for early language learners

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the politeness strategies used by students when communicating with a lecturer via WhatsApp messages. The researcher conducted this study using discourse analysis, with data obtained from 22 final-year students of the English Education Study Program at Universitas Tanjungpura Pontianak, in the form of screenshot messages. The messages were analyzed using referential analysis to examine each utterance. Based on the findings, the students mostly used a combination of positive politeness strategies and negative politeness strategies when messaging a lecturer. Each strategy served its own function; for example, positive politeness strategies were mostly found at the beginning of the message as a form of greeting, while negative politeness strategies were used to indirectly convey intentions and to soften requests. The results of the analysis showed that most students applied politeness strategies appropriately based on the context when communicating with the lecturer, but some still inappropriately used certain words and terms in their messages. Therefore, it is necessary for students to be more aware of appropriate language use, especially in written communication, in order to maintain effective communication and foster a good relationship with the lecturer.

Abstract

This research aims to know students’ perceptions of the use of Grammarly in thesis writing and their experiences in using it. The data were derived from Likert Scale questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire was distributed to 40 English Education students to know about students’ perceptions, which covered three aspects: perceived usefulness, perceived easiness, and students’ satisfaction. Meanwhile, the interview was conducted with three chosen participants to learn about students’ actual experiences in using Grammarly. The result showed the mean score for each aspect with the following distribution: perceived usefulness is 4.06, perceived ease is 3.92, and students’ satisfaction is 4.01. These scores were verbally interpreted as ‘agree’, meaning that students perceived using Grammarly positively. These are supported by the interview results, in which students shared that they experienced benefits from using Grammarly in correcting punctuation, detecting mistyping, reconstructing sentences, and detecting grammar errors. However, the participants also stated that they noticed some weaknesses of this tool, which were related to inaccuracy of the feedback given. Eventually, this study revealed that in general, students agree that Grammarly is a helpful tool to help them with thesis writing, along with its advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, students’ awareness is required to avoid errors that Grammarly might produce.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the relationship between introvert and extrovert personality types and their preferred methods for learning English speaking skills among student of the ULW department at SMK Wira Harapan. The study was motivated by observation that different student exhibit varying preferences in learning strategies that may or may not align with their personality traits. This study using mix-method, qualitative research used interviews and quantitative use personality tests based on the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire to categorize students’ personalities. Data were analyzed by classifying students’ learning methods according to Brown’s (2008) speaking categories: imitative, intensive, responsive, interactive, and extensive. The result show that extrovert student predominantly used interactive and responsive methods, involving others through conversations with friends, teacher, tourists, or strangers. Introvert student tended to prefer imitative and intensive methods, practicing speaking alone by repeating lyrics, shadowing film dialogues, or reading aloud. However, there were exceptions: some extrovert student preferred learning alone with extensive and imitative methods, while some introverts occasionally engaged in brief interactions. These findings indicate that learning methods are influenced not only by personality but also by personal motivation and learning context. The study concludes that interactive methods are most effective for improving student’ speaking abilities, as most student who achieved better fluency practiced English by directly interacting with others, it suggested that teacher more interactive activities in the classroom to boost students’ confidence and speaking competence.

Abstract

This study examines how social actors are represented in Prabowo Subianto’s discourse during the first 2024 Indonesian presidential debate. Drawing on Theo van Leeuwen’s (2008) Social Actor Theory within the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the study analyzes seventeen selected utterances to uncover the ideological and discursive strategies employed to construct political identity and reinforce legitimacy. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the data were obtained from the official debate transcript and analyzed through categorization of inclusion, exclusion, activation, personalization, and other representation strategies. The findings reveal that Prabowo frequently activates himself as a patriotic reformer, elevates the people as sovereign decision-makers, background institutions, and subtly delegitimizes political opponents through irony, contrast, and historical recontextualization. The study also shows how humor, metaphor, and informal language are strategically used to foster emotional proximity with the public. These strategies contribute to building a persuasive and ideologically charged public persona. The results demonstrate that live political performance in presidential debates functions as a site of symbolic authority construction and ideological negotiation. This research offers both theoretical and empirical contributions to discourse studies and political communication, particularly in the context of contemporary Indonesian democracy.
