Abstract

To achieve the goal of learning English, the students must know how to write English well. Some of methods that the teacher had used in teaching it. One of the methods can be used in teaching writing descriptive text, namely Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM).This is the reason of the writers of the research to conduct a research to know the effectiveness of PWIM in teaching writing descriptive text by the eleventh class students of SMA Kristen Makale. The type of research used to achieve the above objective is descriptive quantitative. The data was collected through written test that was given to the students. The total respondents were 20. Result of the research indicates that the mean score of the students in pretest was 51, 68 and falls into bad score classification while the mean score of the post test was 76,5 and falls into good score classification. So, the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text was better after using Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM). Comparing with the t-test value at the level significance on α 5% (0,05 ) it was higher than t-table with degree freedom (df) = n-1, if found that t-test ( 7,75) value is higher than t-table 17.2913. It can be concluded that Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) is effective used in writing descriptive text at the eleventh class students of SMA Kristen Makale.

Abstract

cultural identity is considered as collective, shared history among individuals affiliated by race that is fixed or stable and identity understood as unstable, metamorphic, and even contradictory an identity marked by multiple points of similarities as well as differences (Hall, 2003). This article aimed to describe the cultural identity that impact English proficiency and find out the factors that impact student’s English proficiency, this study was done at private school of Al-Mansyuriyah Tangerang and four students are used as participant to give data, the study used observation, questionnaire and interview. In this case, the researcher identified that cultural identity affect students’ English proficiency, especially in speaking which includes spelling, pronunciation, intonation, and structure. And based on the observation and interview that have been done by the researcher, she found that there are many factors that impact English proficiency at Al-Mansyuriyah such as dialect, pronunciation, heritage language and language structure, based on this finding, the researcher suggest that the teacher is need to teach English language in whole skills using a good strategy in conveying the language to student including the cultural identity of students that can raise students’ awareness of cultural identity and English proficiency

Abstract

Semantics as the study of meaning,semantics is not only related to the study of meaning but also the relationship between language and culture, one of which is Balinese culture is firmly embedded in Kidung literature. The purpose of this research is that the readers of kidung know the meaning in the lyrics of the kidung Panca Yadnya.By theory Geoffrey Leech in his ‘Semantic- A Study of meaning’(1974) This research focus discusses the analysis of the denotative and connotative meanings contained in the lyrics of Panca Yadnya kidung. a) In the Kidung Panca Yadnya there has 1 positive connotative meaning in the first line of the Kidung Panca Yadnya and 24 denotative meanings.b) In the Rsi Yadnya kidung, there is 1 positive connotative meaning and 26 denotative meanings.c) Kidung Manusa Yadnya has 1 positive connotative and 27 denotative meanings.d) Pitra Yadnya only contains denotative meaning, there are 24 denotative meanings.e) In bhuta yadnya it only contains denotative meaning, there are 10 denotative meanings. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method and this research useful for researchers and future readers, not just reading and singing the kidung Panca Yadnya which has a very close relationship in every Balinese Hindu ceremony.

Abstract

This study aims at finding out whether materials in an English course embrace local and/or target language culture. To investigate this issue, learning materials of the course were analysed. This learning materials were seen in the syllabus, lesson plan, and the learning sources used in the course. The results of the analysis show that the course embed both local and target language cultures. Interestingly, the materials also embed global cultures which means the contexts discussed are not merely limited to local and/or target language contexts but also contexts in various countries. Both local and target language cultures can be found in the examples used in grammar materials. Meanwhile, global contexts can be seen in language skills contents. Beside of discussing the example uses of local and target language cultures, this article also discusses several debated points of the use of these cultures. Then, at the end of this article a reflective conclusion is presented.

Abstract

Pamboborang Village is one of the villages in the District of Banggae, Majene Regency. Pamboborang Village which has a lot of potentials to be developed both in terms of tourism and natural resources. The location of this village is not far from the district city center so that this village can quickly obtain information, both the latest news and issues in the community. The people who live in this area have customs that are still practiced today. This attracted our attention to research further, because in the era of increasingly rapid development of technology and science, they still maintain their culture. The purpose of this study is to reveal the meaning of the myth that has been developing in the Pamboborang community, which is part of the community belonging to an educated society in the modern era. This study uses ethnographic qualitative research methods. The results of the research are expected to contribute to the world of education, especially to learn about matters related to humans and culture in general. The results of this study found that cultural activities carried out by the community which became a myth among the community contained the meaning of togetherness, respecting and carrying out the advice of their parents, and remembering the Creator in various situations. This should be maintained considering the increasingly rapid flow of science and technology development. So that later the myths that develop among them can be a medium to filter the impacts of the current science and technology development.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the improvement of reading motivation and skill by using literature circles. The researcher used classroom action research. The sample of this research were the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Cinangka students. The researcher found that there is a significant improvement in reading motivation and skill by using literature circles. In the first cycle, students reading skill improved 42,9%, and the students reading motivation improved 41,%. In the second cycle gradually students reading skill improved 68,6%, and the students reading motivation improved 80,%. In the third cycle, students reading skill improved 91,4%, and the students reading motivation improved 91,4,%. It means that there is a significant improvement of reading motivation and skill which focused on discerning the main idea, specific information, understanding the sequence, and inference. All these suggest that improving reading motivation and skill by using literature circles is highly encouraged.

Abstract

The aims of this study are 1) to analyze the types of figurative language found in “Song Lyrics of the Essential Album by John Denver”, and 2) to analyze the meanings that appeared in "David Campbell’s Poem “Night Sowing”. The method used for this research is qualitative-descriptive. The data were taken from “Song Lyrics of the Essential Album by John Denver as many as 32. The theory used for analyzing the types of figurative language is Peter (2020). The findings of this research indicate that the types of figurative language are divided into 3 types which are, the simile is 5 data, hyperbole is 11 data, personification is 12 data, and metaphor is 2 data. However, the use of Figurative Language that is often used in this album is personification Figurative Language which amounts to twelve data, and the use of Figurative Language which is less used metaphorical Figurative Language which amounts to only two data. The meanings contained in the song lyrics in the album The Essential John Denver are as follows: connotative meaning as 8 data, denotative meaning as much as 18 data, and contextual meaning as many as 4 data, it can be concluded that the meaning that is often used in song lyrics in the album is a denotative meaning which consists of 18 data.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out the improvment of the students’ reading ability at STKIP Kie Raha Ternate in mastery, the reading ability by applying cooperative integrated reading composition. The research population of this study was the second semester students of English education department STKIP Kie Raha Ternate in academic year 2021/2022. It consisted of 7 classes and total populations were 187 students. This research used the purposive sampling technique, and the class English II D was chosen as the sample of the study. The sample were the 30 students. The instrument of this research was the reading test. Reading test was given as pre-test before doing the treatment to know prior ability of the students and post-test after doing treatment to find out the students’ reading comprehension achievement by using cooperative integrated reading composition. The findings showed based on the result of the t-test where the researchers found that there was a significant different between the results of pre-test ad post-test. The difference was seen after comparing it with the value of t-table. There was a significance difference result of the t-test before and after teaching learning process by using cooperative integrated reading composition students post-test was significantly improve. The researchers concluded that the use of the problem based learning strategy improved the students speaking ability and can be used for teaching reading .

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the sense relations and their type of word meanings that found on Ed Sheeran’s Equals Album. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative method. Data sources were taken from the song lyrics of the latest Ed Sheeran’s album. Some of the meaning words were taken from Cambridge Dictionary and Meriam Webster. The theories used to analyze the data were from Hurford and Heasley theory (1986) and Richard and Schmidt theory (2002). The result of this analysis that there were 5 types of sense relation found on this album. They were synonymy 32.3%, polysemy 10.8%, hyponymy 12.3%, homonymy 9.2%, and antonymy 35.4%. This research inferred that synonymy was the most prevalent of the sense relations found in Ed Sheeran's songs from the album Equals. Antonymy accounted for 35.4% of the total, whereas the other types were lower. The second most common form was synonymy, which accounted for up to 32.3%, followed by polysemy and hyponymy, which accounted for 23.1%. Homonymy was the lowest proportion of up to 9.2%.

Abstract

The aims of this research are to find the turn-taking strategy used and the factor of strategy found in turn-taking strategy. The data was taken from Spiderman: No Way Home Cast’s Interviews in CinemaBlend Youtube Channel. The research method used in this research is a qualitative method and the turn taking theory used here is theory by Anna-Brita Stenström. In collecting the data, several steps are applied in this research; finding the sources for the data, watching the video which is an object for analysis, transcribing the script, analyzing the script, describing the result of the research and making a conclusion of the research. The result of the strategy is classified based on the type of each strategy, starting up (11%), interruption (17%), filled pause and verbal filler (30%), silent pause (13%), lexical repetition (25%), prompting (2%) and appealing (2%). According to the findings, the most common types in this study were filled pause and verbal filler. 'uh' and 'mmm' are the most common expressions associated with filled pauses and verbal fillers. The speaker would typically hesitate for a second before muttering the verbal fillers and resume their sentence.
