Abstract

By examining Banten's local wisdom, this paper intends to investigate the evolution of English for Tourism teaching materials. This article examines the concept of material development, material development principles, material development requirements analysis, and local wisdom as a point in the construction of teaching materials. The following section covers the material development process and analyzes the development of English Tourism course materials based on local knowledge. This article also offers advice on how to incorporate local knowledge into material development and how to create useful materials for an English for Tourism course.

Abstract

This study is aimed to find out how students’ linguistic knowledge to comprehend defamation text. Defamation is defined as misuse of language to humiliate other person. The researcher took 75 students of sixth semester, of English Education study program, of Unversitas Raja Ali Haji, Tanjungpinag, as the research participant. This research employed qualitative design with aaplying calculation to assert the result. The data was collected by a set of questions which consists of 13 multiple choice questions. The validiy test had been conducted before the data gathering. The linguistic knowledge in this study were limited with semantic and pragmatic. The result shows that semantic and pragmatic knowledge of the students were not adequate, which means that, the students need to develop their knowledge of linguistic by improving their text comprehension.

Abstract

Language will be acquired and mastered due to habitual factors. In the case of second language learning in higher education, it is expected that the use of English as language instruction is needed to improve students ability in Speaking. In fact, in the learning process, code-switching is still carried out by lecturers, and result of some studies shows that students respond positively to the it. The purpose of this study is to find out the function of code-switching carried out by lecturers in Speaking classes at UKI Toraja. Researchers used quantitative descriptive methods. This research population are lecturers who perform code-switching in Speaking courses in the classroom at UKI Toraja. Total sampling is used in sample selection with interviews as a tool for collecting data. The results of the study processed using quantitative descriptive methods. The result shows that lectures switch code in teaching Speaking for several functions. They are: a. to introduce new topic b. to create good learning atmosphere. c to build effective, flexible and non-rigid communication d. as a strategy to facilitate and check student understanding e. to minimize the students’ levels of anxiety in conveying their ideas.

Abstract

Penelitian ini adalah sebuah kajian tentang praktek budaya (tradisi) dalam lokalitas masyarakat pesawah Bugis di Kabupaten Bone yang bernafaskan keislaman dan di dalam prakteknya terdapat berbagai mitos. Kajian ini berangkat dari adanya fenomena berupa praktek budaya selamatan yang dalam masyarakat Bugis biasa disebut dengan massalama (selamatan). Praktek ini sepertinya sudah menjadi suatu integritas yang mesti dilakukan jika akan memulai aktivitas persawahan, selesainya aktivitas persawahan, bahkan setelah panen. Tradisi massalama ini tetap eksis, tersembunyi, dan diwariskan secara turun-temurun. Banyak dari masyarakat pesawah yang hingga kini masih taat dan memegang kukuh adat-istiadat serta percaya pada sejumlah mitos yang ada di dalam pragtek massalama ini. Bahkan banyak masyarakat yang tidak memahami dasar tradisi massalama ini dan bagaimana proses islamisasi budaya yang sudah terjadi. Atas dasar itu perlu kiranya kita melihat tentang bagaimanakah eksistensi tradisi massalama ini, mitos dan makna yang ada dalam tradisi massalama ini dari sudut pandang semiotika. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mendeskripsikan tentang eksistensi dan mengungkap mitos, dan makna-makna yang ada kaitannya dalam seputar tradisi massalama ini. Dengan begitu kita dapat memahami konsep masyarakat terhadap tradisi massalama. Hasil penelitian ini juga diharapkan dapat menjadi salah satu dasar bagi para mubaliq untuk pengembangan dakwah dalam proses islamisasi budaya yang hingga kini masih terus berlangsung. Tahapan metode penelitian yang akan dilakukan yaitu, observasi, tanya-jawab, pencatatan (rekam dan tulis), dokumentasi, analisis data, deskripsi hasil penelitian. Adapun luaran dari hasil penelitian ini berupa jurnal dan seminar.

Abstract

It was such a descriptive qualitative research that aimed at identifying the linguistic forms of viral words on Instagram and describing their meanings and contexts. The data were English words, phrases or sentences being viral on instagram. The source of the data was the captions or videos on instagram. The data were collected through observation and documentation. Observation was carried out by observing the words on instagram using English language. They then were documented by applying print screen (capturing the picture using computer) or screen shoot (capturing the picture using cellphone). The result of the research showed the occurrence of 286 data consisting of 153 data in the forms of words and 133 data in the form of phrases. The word form covered 17 words of ghosting, 18 words for roasting, 21 words of insecure, 15 of damage, review as many as 33, toxic as many as 8, vibes as many as 11, auto as many as 11, throwback as many as 10, and abbreviation OOTD as many as 9. In addition, the form of phrases as many as 133 consisted of close friend as many as 13, welcome to Indonesia as many as 30, be like as many as 19, no debat as many as 10, then now as many as 35, good looking as many as 16, and stay safe as many as 10. The results presented the fact that then now took the first place as many as 35. It showed that the users of Instagram mostly like to memorize their past. In other hand, review took the second place as many as 33. It explored the trend of showing one self’s strength. The last rank was taken by welcome to Indonesia as many as 30. It pointed the situation in Indonesia that need to be arranged well, either in areas of social, political, economic, etc.

Abstract

In this modern era, technology plays a very important role in human life. Related to film production, Technology can emerge hyperreality -fiction reality that looks real- to provide a better experience and sensation for the viewers. Avengers Endgame movie is one of action movie that uses hyperreality for the effect. This movie is directed by Antony and Joe Ruso. This paper explores the effects of hyperreality that occurs in the superhero team. Bearing with the objective of the study, the researcher uses the theory of hyperreality proposed by Jean Baudrillard. In this paper, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative method to explore and explain how hyperreality affected the superhero team in Avengers Endgame. The result shows that CGI technology plays a very important role in creating hyperreality effects. Superheroes with incredible abilities, places, planets, weapons, and scenes are supported by CGI to enable imagination as an illusion that looks so real in the movie. Many things that do not exist and seem impossible in the real world look so real that it is difficult to distinguish between illusion and reality. That is how hyperreality effects on the Avenger Endgame movie applied.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the use of textual and visual-digital language in textbook used as learning materials for children at the Early Childhood Education (PAUD) level in Bogor. The book becoming the subject of the research is the 4D Encyclopedia Series for Children, Dinosaurs series. The data sourced from selection results related to text, and visual-digital images that are adapted to the language level of children at the Early Childhood Education (PAUD) level. The researcher will use a critical multimodal discourse analysis and children language development theory to find out the level of compatibility between the discursive level in discourses presented in the book in textual and digital (audio-visual) form with Android based artificial intelligence technology. Interview with the textbook users was conducted as well to triangulate data of the research findings. The results of this study are expected to be a source of information for linguistic and education researchers in the future in exploring more about textual, visual, and digital language editorials in textbooks that are used as a basis for teacher reference in teaching. In addition, the results of this study are also expected to provide insightful perspectives for writers and book designers in creating works that are appropriate to the level of students.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop English teaching materials based science literacy for biology students and to determine the appropriateness of these teaching materials to be used in the learning process at the Biology students of IAIN Metro. This was a research and development (R & D). The steps of the research development model carried out include 6 steps, namely research and collecting the data, planning, develop preliminary form of product, preliminary field testing, main product revision, main field testing, operational product revision. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that the development of English teaching materials can be integrated with Biology so that it can support English Language Lectures in the Biology Education Department, as well as differentiating English in the Biology department and other departments. The teaching material entitled "Basic English for Biology Students" was suitable for use in the Biology Language Teaching Department with several improvements. In the aspect of content eligibility, a total score of 23 of the 7 question items was obtained. The average content feasibility assessment was 3.28 or 82.14%. The supporting or reference material aspect obtained a total value of 9 out of 3 question items, an average of 3 and the percentage was 75%. In the aspect of presentation feasibility, it was obtained a total value of 8 from the 2 question items. The average feasibility assessment was 4 and the percentage was 100%. This study concludes that the textbook was suitable for used. Keywords: teaching materials development, science literacy, biology

Abstract

This study is aimed in improving students’ English productive skills by using podcast and padlet. It apllied quasi-experimental research with pre-test and podcast design. Podcast and Padlet are two free online platform that can be accessed for English language teaching and learning process. The sample of this study consisted of 50 students from MA Assalafiyah who all of them are santri of Pondok Pesantren Assalafiyah. One class was the experimental class and taught by applying podcast and padlet, and the other class was the control class that was taught by using lecturing method. The data were collecting by test of speaking and writing as English productive skills requirement. The t-test was used to analyze the data. The result if the study shown that there were significant differences between students from experimental and control group. The students from experimental group had the higher score on speaking and writing than those from control group.

Abstract

Abstract Since 2019, the Language Training Center of the National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA) has conducted English online training. However, when the Covid-19 was announced pandemic, the way it was organised had to be adjusted. Organising online learning is a way that enables the learning process to continue. The classical interaction turns into virtual interaction using online learning platforms. Although there are many barriers in organising an online learning environment, it still has to be carried out since it is one of the responsibilities of the Language Training Center of NIPA. There are a lot of aspects to consider in organising English online training, one of which is interaction. Interaction takes most of the successful learning indicators: interaction between tutors and participants and among participants. In regards to this current situation, this study would like to analyze the participants’ perception on the English online training. There were 40 participants of English Communication Skills for the Civil Service (ECSCS) Training. The research data was obtained from the questionnaire whose content covered three aspects, which include learning materials, atmosphere or classroom environment, and interactions. Participants responded to a questionnaire about the English online training that they experienced in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. The results of the data indicated that to a great extent, the participants agree that the learning materials, the atmosphere or learning environment, and the interaction during the English online training made them more motivated in learning English and able to apply English in context.
