Abstract

This research examines the effectiveness of AI-based speech recognition technology in fostering English pronunciation skills among students. The study emphasizes the importance of pronunciation proficiency as a cornerstone of language learning and its impact on overall communication effectiveness. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group methodology was employed. The participants were 58 third-year Accounting Diploma students from State Polytechnic of Malang, Indonesia. They were divided into two groups: an experimental class utilizing the Google Read Along application and a control class receiving conventional teaching methods. The results demonstrate a significant improvement in pronunciation skills within the experimental group. These students achieved an average N-Gain score of 0.7646, categorized as "high," compared to the control group's average score of 0.6564, classified as "moderate." Furthermore, a t-test analysis revealed a statistically significant difference between the two groups, with a p-value (2-tailed) of 0.000. These findings strongly suggest that AI-based speech recognition technology offers a more effective approach to enhancing English pronunciation compared to conventional methods. This research paves the way for integrating this technology into language learning curriculums. The potential for significant positive impacts on student pronunciation skills is promising and warrants further exploration in future research endeavors.

Abstract

Abstract The Independent Curriculum was introduced by the Indonesian government to improve the quality of education, address global challenges, and equip students with the necessary competencies and skills to succeed in an increasingly competitive world. This curriculum is expected to lead Indonesian education towards a brighter future in the face of intensified global competition. This study aims to explore the implementation of speaking assessment and its connection to other elements. The research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive design. A questionnaire was used to generate data from respondents of random sampling by sharing a questionnaire through a google form. The researcher used a descriptive design to collect data from 35 English teachers from various cities in East Java. The results showed that teachers demonstrated a strong commitment to implementing speaking assessments by incorporating assessment items into their teaching modules or lesson plans. The most common approach employed by the teachers was having students engage in conversations with one another, facilitated by the teacher who provided topics for discussion. The majority of respondents (97.1%) indicated that they planned assessments, including speaking skills, in their teaching plans. All teachers who have implemented Independent Curriculum carried out pre-test as a diagnostic assessment, aligning with the principles of Independent Curriculum. The findings also shed light on the strategy employed by teachers for speaking assessments. Keywords Teachers’ strategy Speaking assesment Independent curriculum

Abstract

Teacher talk significantly influences classroom interactions since it holds dominance within a classroom. How teachers construct the classroom interaction will affect how well students receive and produce a language. Teacher talk can either offer positive or negative impacts depending on how it is applied. For this reason, it is critical to evaluate teachers as a reflection to improve the quality of learning. In this case, it is also necessary to delve into students’ responses and opinions during the classroom interaction. Therefore, this study aimed to examine modes and interactional features of a teacher talk based on the SETT framework and students’ responses and opinions to the teacher talk. The study employed a qualitative approach that combines qualitative descriptive research and discourse analysis. The findings showed three classroom modes and eight interactional features in the teacher talk. Another finding revealed that the most students responded to the teacher talk in specific and open-ended responses. Further finding showed that the students acknowledged the difficulties in comprehending the teacher talk and speaking in the English classroom. The factors contributing to these difficulties are linguistic and psychological factors. Thus, adjusting teachers’ language based on student language ability and establishing a convenient classroom environment should be considered

Abstract

Pre-service teachers are urged to broaden their perspectives through interactions with school residents, students, and direct exposure to real-world situations. This study aims to explore the perceptions of pre-service teachers at the Universitas Teknologi Yogyakarta (UTY), and the host teachers from SMKN 1 Godean regarding teaching assistants through the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program, and further identify challenges encountered during its implementation. Qualitative descriptive research was utilized, and the data were obtained through open-ended questions, and a semi-structured interview. 18 respondents participated in the present study, including 5 students from ELESP, 5 students of Technology and Information Education, 5 students from guidance counseling, and 3 host teachers from SMKN 1 Godean. The data analysis in this research is based on Miles & Huberman's interactive model theory (1994). The researchers discovered that pre-service teachers from UTY and host teachers from SMKN 1 Godean have similar perceptions of teaching assistants in the MBKM program. Teaching assistants are opportunities for pre-service teachers to get teaching and administrative experience out of campus. Their perceptions of these programs include gaining new knowledge, and experience, being ready for teaching, and using teaching methods appropriately. Pre-service teachers countered challenges regarding pedagogical issues, subject-matter knowledge, and communication skills
