Abstract

This study explores the role of discourse markers (DMs) within an educational context, particularly in elementary school classrooms, and examines how these markers function in the learning process. The research focuses on a Grade 3 teacher at Tunjung Sari School, where data were collected through recorded observations of the teacher's utterances using a multi-step process: first, recording the teacher's speech; second, carefully reviewing the recordings; and third, annotating instances of DMs. The study identifies four categories of DMs and explains their functions in context, based on the frameworks of Maschler (1994) and Fung and Carter (2007). A total of 56 DMs were classified, with structural markers emerging as the most frequently used. The word okay appeared 8 times, while the word so appeared 9 times in the conversations analyzed. The prominence of structural markers is attributed to their ability to guide students by linking different parts of utterances, thereby facilitating a coherent flow of understanding during the learning process.

Abstract

In recent years, there has been a significant shift in how students complete their assignments. This change is largely influenced by technological advancements, particularly the emergence of ChatGPT. Students have increasingly relied on ChatGPT for various aspects of their writing. This research aims to explore the role of ChatGPT in helping students develop their critical thinking skills in writing academic papers. The research employs a quantitative method with a survey technique. The subjects of this study are 40 English Education students on one of universities in East Java, representing Writing classes from each semester. In this study, questionnaires are used to determine the frequency of responses and the percentage size. The research identifies various roles that ChatGPT plays in students' critical thinking processes during academic writing, such as helping to identify text genres, assisting in evaluating the quality of writing and identifying the strengths and weaknesses of texts, as well as helping to generate new ideas for writing.

Abstract

This research focused on the Morphological Study of Word Formation on the Indonesian G20 Website. This research’s objectives were to identify and classify the word-formation types, processes, and meanings found in the selected articles on the Indonesian G20 Website. The writers used a descriptive-qualitative approach to analyze the data textually. The writers identified 98 words that indicate the word formation process. Moreover, through the 10 existing categories of the word formation process analyzed, 5 were identified. These categories included the borrowing type, which consisted of 21 words; the compounding type, which consisted of 12 words; the acronym type, which consisted of 14 words; the derivational type, which consisted of 48 words; and the multiple processes type, which consisted of 3 words. Nevertheless, the words resulting from coinage, blending, clipping, backformation, and conversion were not discovered. Furthermore, word formation can be generated through some processes, including borrowing from various languages, adding affixes, combining with other root words, and removing or shortening the word. Overall, the objective of each process of word formation is to create a new term that conveys meanings and grammatical categories that differ from the original word.

Abstract

Informatics students currently face challenges in mastering English, which is crucial for keeping up with developments in computer science, as this language serves as the primary instructional medium. Previous research has shown that, despite its importance, the level of English proficiency among students at our campus remains low. This research has identified students' needs and developed teaching materials; however, these materials are still presented in conventional printed modules and do not fully address needs such as pronunciation. In this study, the researchers designed a flipbook-based learning media that integrates audio, images, and videos to meet the diverse needs of students in learning English. This media is also tailored to align with the expectations of Generation Z, who are very familiar with technology. The method used in the design process is Research and Development (RnD) with the ADDIE development model (Analysis, Design, Develop, Implementation, Evaluation). The results indicate that the English for Informatics flipbook-based learning media consists of seven chapters, equipped with multimedia elements and gamification concepts. Validation from subject matter and media experts categorizes this media as "very suitable for use." Additionally, student response analysis shows very positive feedback regarding the use of this flipbook, indicating significant potential to enhance English language skills among Informatics students at our campus.

Abstract

This study aims to discuss the form of Indonesian and Malay code mixing in a collection of narrative texts of Malay students from Brunei Darussalam who took the fall semester at the Malay-Indonesian study program at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Korea. The approach used in this study is qualitative with the content analysis method. The primary data in this study is a collection of narrative texts of Malay students from Brunei Darussalam who take the title about visits to tourist attractions in South Korea. Based on the results of this study, 16 forms of code mixing were found in Indonesian and Malay in the collection of student narrative texts with language code mixing forms such as the insertion of elements in the form of words and the insertion of elements in the form of phrases. The collection of narrative texts of Brunei Darussalam students, especially in terms of language use, still contains elements of absorption from the Malay language that developed from Indonesia, especially the Riau Malay language, this proves that there is a kinship between the Malay language and the Indonesian language.

Abstract

Much research has shown that task-based language learning (TBLT) can improve students' speaking ability. However, many students struggle to speak, especially at the senior high school level. This research aimed to determine the impact of the Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) method on the speaking ability of SMA Negeri 14 Gowa class XI students. The design of this research used an experimental procedure with a quantitative approach. The population of this research was 62 students who were divided into two classes, namely the control class and the experimental class. This research used pre-tests and post-tests. Then, the researcher continued with four meetings using the task-based language teaching method (TBLT). This data was obtained through pre-test and post-test, where the researcher took the students' speaking performance scores. The results showed that the average pre-test score of students in the control class was 58.45, and the post-test was 59.87. While the average pre-test score in the experimental class was 58.71, and the post-test was 70.32. There was a significant difference in the average score in the experimental class. The value increased by 11.6, after being given treatment with a significance level of 0.004 <0.05, H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. Based on the results of this research, it can be concluded that there is an improvement in students' speaking ability using task-based language Teaching in class XI IPA I students of SMA Negeri 14 Gowa Keywords Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) Method, Sharing Personal Experience, Speaking Ability

Abstract

Writing skills are one of the skills students learn at the senior high school level. This research aims to discover how Grammarly can increase students' writing skills in writing descriptive text for the tenth-grade students of SMAN 01 Sekadau Hilir. This research was done using a pre-experimental design that used one group of pretest and post-test types. The research findings showed that the t-test result with the degree of freedom (df) = 35 and significant level (α = 0.05) was 15.07, and the t-table was 1.690. It shows that the t-test was higher than the t-table (15.07 > 1.690). It can be inferred that the use of Grammarly to increase students' writing skills in writing descriptive text is effective. It can be concluded that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted while the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Furthermore, the result of the effect size was 2.51, which is categorized as a strong effect. Therefore, the use of Grammarly to increase students' writing skills in writing descriptive text was effective with a significant effect.
