The finding of the research is that there is an influence of linguistic intelligence on the fantasy story writing skills of Makassar City junior high school students. The results of simple linear regression calculations show that the t-test result (12.012) > t table (1.652) with a significance of 0.00 <0.05 therefore, the t-test result (12.012) > t table (1.652) means H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. The conclusion is that linguistic intelligence affects students' fantasy story writing skills. The contribution of this research is to provide new knowledge to students and teachers that linguistic or good language intelligence can produce good writing. Future research will explore more intelligence other than linguistic intelligence possessed by students.

Abstract

This study delves into the efficacy of self-directed learning (SDL) strategies in improving listening comprehension skills among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, a critical aspect of language acquisition that has seen limited exploration in current educational research. With the advent of technological advancements and the increasing demand for autonomous learning capabilities, this research focuses on identifying the autonomous learning strategies employed by EFL students and the challenges they face in enhancing their listening skills outside the conventional classroom setting. Utilizing a qualitative research methodology, data were collected through open-ended questions via Google Forms from the fourth-semester students of the English Study Program at Cokroaminoto Palopo University, selected through purposive sampling based on their engagement and interest in self-directed listening activities. The thematic analysis of the responses provided deep insights into the nuanced experiences of students, revealing a significant reliance on a variety of listening materials, including podcasts, movies, and digital platforms, which not only facilitated linguistic development but also fostered a profound sense of learner autonomy. The results highlight the crucial role of metacognitive awareness and the strategic application of listening comprehension strategies in boosting learners’ confidence and proficiency. Additionally, the study emphasizes the need for educational frameworks that support SDL practices with targeted instructional resources and approaches to effectively address listening comprehension barriers. This research underscores the importance of integrating SDL into language education to prepare learners for the global communication challenges of the 21st century, advocating for an educational model that emphasizes learner autonomy, metacognitive strategy training, and the utilization of multimodal learning resources.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the level of student engagement in English language learning (ELL) in an Islamic boarding school, utilizing a phenomenological research methodology. The study's primary objectives are: firstly, to understand how students subjectively interpret and experience their engagement in ELL activities within the boarding school setting; secondly to analyze the contextual factors present in the Islamic school environment that students believe impact their engagement; and finally, to examine how students perceive the harmony or potential discord between the teaching and learning of English and their religious and cultural beliefs. The results of the study have been divided into three main themes: students' perspectives on engagement in the ELL, contextual factors in the educational environment, and perceptions of harmony/discord between ELL and religious beliefs. These findings highlight the complex linguistic dynamics that exist within pesantren settings, emphasizing the need for tailored pedagogical strategies to be formulated and implemented. This discussion emphasizes the necessity for a thorough investigation that takes into account the perspectives of different stakeholders and the specific contexts of institutions to understand the intricacies of the language learning process in the distinct setting of pesantren. This research project has the potential to make a significant contribution towards the development of culturally sensitive and inclusive language learning environments.

Abstract

This study mainly focuses on investigating the devoicing phenomenon happening in Indonesian language. There are nine words selected as the sample of the study: [akad], [jilid], [wujud], [kutub], [sebab], [tertib], [caleg], [dialog], and [warteg]. All these words involve voiced stop consonants including bilabial /b/, alveolar /d/, and velar /g/ at coda position (final word). Ten participants from different age and gender were selected as participants, they subsequently produced the words and the data of their vocalizations were transcribed and analyzed using Praat software. Praat was used to bring the data of pitch (frequency), duration, and intensity. The result of the data suggests that the participant experienced the phonological process called devoicing while pronouncing the words. The words which in the first place involve voiced stop consonants, turn into voiceless stop consonants /p/, /t/, /k/ respectively. To give phonological explanation of devoicing, generative phonology and optimality theory were used. Generative phonology was used to show the changing process from level of representation to the surface level of representation as well as to formulate the phonological rule for the devoicing process. Meanwhile, optimality theory was used to describe the input and output for each word. Keywords: devoicing; generative phonology; optimality theory; stop consonants
