Abstract

This study aims to investigates the effectiveness of using flashcards to teach English vocabulary to young learners. The research was conducted at SDN Gempol 2 with 36 third-grade students. A one-group pre-experimental design was employed, using pre-test and post-test to collect the data. The results revealed a significant improvement in students' vocabulary mastery, with the average score increasing from 65.83 (pre-test) to 76.80 (post-test). Statistical analysis showed that the t-value (11.056) exceeded the critical value (2.035), and the significance level (p = .000) was below the threshold of 0.05, indicating a meaningful difference. These findings suggest that flashcards are an effective tool for enhancing vocabulary acquisition among young learners, as they help maintain students’ engagement through visual and interactive learning.

Abstract

This study explores the challenges that pre-service teachers face when developing interactive video assessments, with a focus on the technological, pedagogical and psychological aspects involved. While interactive videos have been shown to increase student engagement, some pre-service teachers struggle to create them. Three English education students from Mulawarman University were purposefully selected for the study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions and analysed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed technical challenges like unstable internet and delayed AI. Pedagogical challenges such as teachers relied heavily on AI, and limiting creativity. Psychological challenges when participants did not trust the accuracy of AI or the grammar of AI-generated questions, necessitating additional scrutiny. Despite these challenges, the study showed that participants transitioned from passively accepting the AI's output to actively adapting and refining it. This demonstrates that, when teachers take ownership of the contextualisation of materials, interactive video assessments can be effective, provided they are supported by thorough training in digital pedagogy and AI literacy.

Abstract

With the rapid development of social media, the phenomenon of hate speech on digital platforms has increasingly gained global attention, including in Indonesia. TikTok, as a platform with short video formats, has become a busy space for interaction, but also a medium for the emergence of hate speech. This article aims to analyze the phenomenon of hate speech in the comment sections of TikTok account Shafeea Ahmad, focusing on the types of implicatures contained within them. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this research explores various forms of hate speech, such as implicatures of insult, warnings, anger, annoyance, and provocation found in netizens' comments. The results of the study show that hate speech occurring in TikTok comment sections can damage individual reputations, create social tensions, and worsen the mental health of victims. Therefore, a more considerate approach in commenting on social media is needed to create a safer digital space.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of Teacher Professional Development (TPD) on EFL teachers’ instructional practices and their perceived effects on students’ academic achievement in the Indonesian context. Drawing on Guskey's model of teacher change, this quantitative research involved three English teachers at SMA BOPKRI 2 Yogyakarta who participated in a structured TPD initiative. Data were collected using a Likert scale questionnaire, and analyzed descriptively on the impact of Teacher Professional Development and their perceived effect on students' academic achievement. The findings revealed consistent positive changes across five indicators: professional growth, instructional practices, student-centered adjustment, student engagement, and academic achievement. The respondents reported that TPD may enhance their self-confidence, increase innovative teaching strategies, and improve responsiveness to student needs. Furthermore, the study found that instructional improvement had a clear motivational effect on students; previously passive learners became more engaged, confident, and enthusiastic about learning English. Teachers also perceived improvements in students’ academic performance across key skill areas, including speaking, writing, and comprehension. This shows that TPD programs not only enhance teachers' pedagogical capabilities but also lead to meaningful gains in the students' engagement and learning achievement.

Abstract

This study investigates the English language training requirements of civil servants at the Personnel and Human Resource Development Agency in an Indonesian industrial city. A systematic needs analysis approach used to examine current proficiency levels, identify specific skill gaps, and determine preferred learning methodologies among 50 government employees in an industrial area. The research used a mixed-methods design integrating demographic surveys, self-assessment questionnaires, and analysis of workplace context. The study results revealed significant proficiency gaps, especially in oral communication skills, with 78% of participants rating their speaking abilities as poor or moderate. The priority training areas included technical terminology in public administration, professional communication, and service for international visitors especially from industry. The results show that instead of general English instruction, civil servants need specialized English for Specific Purposes (ESP) training. In order to improve institutional capacity for international engagement, the study offers evidence-based recommendations for curriculum design, scheduling preferences, and assessment frameworks.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is a crucial skill in English learning, yet many Indonesian EFL students still face difficulties in understanding texts. This study aimed to investigate the implementation of the Listen-Read-Discuss (LRD) strategy in teaching reading comprehension and to explore students’ perspectives on its effectiveness. The research employed a qualitative descriptive design with junior high school students as participants. Data were collected through classroom observation and semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically. The findings revealed that the teacher implemented the three stages of LRD consistently and systematically. The listening stage provided a model of fluent reading that helped students capture the main ideas, the reading stage offered opportunities for independent practice and vocabulary reinforcement, and the discussion stage promoted interaction, interpretation, and collaborative meaning-making. From the students’ perspective, LRD made reading lessons more motivating, enjoyable, and supportive of comprehension. However, several challenges emerged, particularly limited vocabulary knowledge and unequal participation during discussions, which suggest that adaptation is needed to optimize its use. Overall, this study confirms that LRD is an effective strategy for teaching reading comprehension in EFL contexts while also extending previous research by highlighting contextual obstacles in Indonesian classrooms. The results imply that teachers may integrate vocabulary pre-teaching, visual aids, and structured discussion techniques to enhance the effectiveness of LRD. Future research is recommended to test this strategy with larger samples, different text types, and digital-based adaptations to broaden its pedagogical contribution.

Abstract

Despite facing significant challenges, Augmented Reality (AR) has proven to be a highly effective and promising tool for revitalizing Arabic vocabulary (mufradat) learning. Generally, AR is a major success because it creates a more interactive and engaging learning environment, which in turn significantly boosts students' motivation, interest, and comprehension. This key success stems from AR's ability to provide 3D visualization of the mufradat, making it much easier for students to memorize and understand abstract word meanings while bridging the gap between theory and practice. The positive impact is clearly visible in the increase in students' average test scores, the strengthening of vocabulary mastery, and the improvement of speaking skills (maharah kalam). However, this progress is met with major challenges, both pedagogical and technical. Pedagogical issues include conventional methods being monotonous and unappealing, students struggling to master and recall vocabulary, and the problem of insufficient teacher readiness in using the new technology. Technical constraints, on the other hand, involve limited AR content, issues with device compatibility (often restricted to the Android system), and the high error rate in text recognition. Therefore, while AR is a powerful solution for overcoming traditional challenges, it requires ongoing development and infrastructural support.

Abstract

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education is increasingly widespread, but its impact on pragmatic competencies such as language politeness has not been widely studied. This study aims to: (1) measure the effect of AI use on students' language politeness, (2) explore students' interpretations of these changes, and (3) analyze significant differences between groups using AI and those not. This study used a mixed method with a quasi-experimental design involving students divided into experimental (n=30) and control (n=29) groups. Data were collected through language politeness tests (pre-test and post-test), Focus Group Discussions (FGD), interviews, and observations, then analyzed statistically (t-test) and thematically. The results showed that: (1) There was a significant increase in the experimental group (from an average of 53.70 to 60.17; p < 0.001). (2) Students perceive AI as a learning partner that triggers cognitive, behavioral, and affective transformation, and (3) There is no significant difference between the scores of the experimental and control groups (p = 0.138). These findings indicate that although AI is effective in improving language politeness, the improvement can be matched by other methods that are also successful in raising metapragmatic awareness. The control group achieved equivalent results through the use of social support (social scaffolding), intensive self-evaluation, and high motivation triggered by awareness as research participants (Hawthorne Effect). Therefore, it can be concluded that metapragmatic awareness is a key factor that is more decisive in improving language politeness, compared to simply using certain tools or technologies.
