Abstract

The presence of cohesive devices in speech plays a crucial role in representing the functioning of language. Beyond enhancing the effectiveness of written communication, cohesive devices guide listeners into the realm of context, fostering a shared understanding of meaning. This research focuses on analyzing grammatical and lexical cohesions in Donald Trump's inauguration speech from the 2016 United States presidential election, which took place on January 20th, 2017. The objective of the study is to explore the representation of both grammatical and lexical cohesions. A qualitative method was employed, and data were extracted from pauses in Trump's speech, specifically noting cohesive devices. The findings reveal that grammatical cohesion encompasses references, substitutions, ellipsis, and conjunctions. Lexical cohesions identified include repetition, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, meronymy, and collocation. Repetition was observed in 29 pauses, substitutions in 6 pauses, ellipsis in 8 pauses, and conjunctions in 31 pauses. Regarding lexical cohesion, the study identified repetition in 32 pauses, synonymy in 10 pauses, antonymy in 5 pauses, hyponymy in 3 pauses, meronymy in 2 pauses, and collocation in 6 pauses. However, it was noted that incohesive instances occurred in the case of conjunctions, potentially influenced by the situational or contextual factors. In conclusion, this study sheds light on the diverse cohesive devices employed in Trump's inauguration speech, emphasizing the significance of context in understanding language use.  Keywords: cohesive device, conjunctions, ellipsis, grammatical cohesion, lexical cohesion, substitutions

Abstract

This study examines the primary conflicts within the novel Great Expectations, each paragraph focusing on a distinct conflict present in the narrative. The analysis applies Lewis A. Coser’s theory of social conflict (2002), which categorizes conflicts into three types: conflicts concerning social statuses, conflicts of interest, and conflicts of role. The objective of this research is to identify these social conflicts within the novel and explore their impact on readers. The study identifies a total of 13 instances of social conflict: 7 related to conflicts concerning social statuses, 3 involving conflicts of interest, and 3 concerning conflicts of role. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the research analyzes textual data to uncover these conflicts, which are integral to the story of the main character. The novel adopts a mode that combines personal narrative with written and spoken dialogue. The influence of these social conflicts on readers is significant, as they resonate with real-life situations, helping readers to understand and navigate various types of conflicts encountered in everyday life.Keyword: literature, conflict, character

Abstract

Language acquisition is a process which is experienced by a child in acquiring a first and second language. It needs a natural setting of target language in order to convey and understand the message correctly. The research was designed as a qualitative study to describe the process of second language acquisition experienced by Afghan refugees living in Makassar City for 5 to 10 years. In addition to describing the language acquisition process for Bahasa Indonesia as a second language, the study also explored the factors influencing this process. The research took 10 Afghan refugees who were proficient in Bahasa Indonesia as participants. To gather data related to their language acquisition and the factors influencing it, the informants were interviewed. Observation was used to supplement and verify the data on Bahasa Indonesia acquisition from the interviews. Thus, the data were analysed based on Krashen's theory (1995) of acquisition learning and the factors that influenced the informants' language acquisition. The research revealed that the refugees in Makassar used various methods (self-learning, courses) to acquire Bahasa Indonesia. They progressed through the five stages of language acquisition. Internal (motivation, personality, aptitude) and external factors (learning situations, local interactions) influenced their learning. Despite challenges, they persevered by practicing with Indonesian neighbours.Keyword: language acquisition, Afghan refugees, efforts, interaction, local people

Abstract

Objectives of this study were to analyze types of polysemy in the and to interpret polysemous words realized in the Frozen movie script. A method of this study was qualitative that produced descriptive data. The data were words that contained polysemy. A source of data in the study was Frozen (2013) movie scripts. The data were analyzed using suitable theories, including the type of polysemy proposed by Apresjan (1974) and meaning proposed by Lyons (1981). Based on the analysis, it was found that there are 26 pairs of data of polysemy that consist of two types of polysemy; 20 pairs of data are regular polysemy and six pairs of data were irregular polysemy. In the Frozen movie script, regular polysemy is more dominant than irregular polysemy because regular polysemy has the same systematic word but is different semantically or non-synonymous. Meanwhile, irregular polysemy has the same or true meaning as other words, and even it has no systematic relation. In conclusion, polysemy can arise in spoken or written language, so that the ambiguous word that have more than one meaning are categorized into polysemy.  Keywords: polysemy, meaning, frozen, movie script, semantics

Abstract

Deixis is an essential component of communication that must be carefully considered to improve its efficiency and prevent misunderstandings. This study aimed to analyze Suho EXO’s speech at the Stanford Korea Program 20th Anniversary Conference focused on the discourse deixis and types of discourse deixis used and investigate their functions. The research employed a qualitative method. A theory used in this study was based on the Levinson’s deixis theory (1983). Discourse deixis refers to deictic references to segments of discourse relative to the speaker’s current position within the discourse. Discourse deixis, like anaphora and cataphora, can serve as a cohesive device within a text. The analysis found 53 deictic expressions in 38 utterances in the speech. The types of discourse deixis found in the speech were it (20 data), this (10 data), and (7 data), these (4 data), but (4 data), that (2 data), so (2 data), those (1 datum), there (1 datum), or (1 datum), and actually (1 datum). Moreover, 34 data contained anaphora functions, such as and, it, this. Meanwhile, 19 data contained cataphora functions, such as that, but, or, so, these, those, and actually. Therefore, paying attention to deixis leads to more distinctive, accurate, and compelling conversations.Keyword: discourse deixis, speech, suho EXO

Abstract

This research is an analysis of the allegorical plot of Animal Farm and its clever usage of anthropomorphism in the change from a peaceful farm to a tyrannical one. This paper indicates the major features of the change from a utopian farm to a dystopian one, such as the perpetually increasing amount of labour that each animal has to undertake, the obvious decrease of ration which the pigs use for trading otherwise, the disturbing intervention into animals' personal freedom and thought by the totalitarian pigs and many more accounts that further establish such change. The aim of this was to shed light on those distinct paths that may lead any society towards dystopia, lest any community may have already begun going down such paths, to alert them and reverberate the sounding alarm. At the beginning, this research dealt with an introduction to the background of the time and literary movement that was present during the process of writing Animal Farm, namely the rise of the Stalinisit regime, and the surge of Utopian/Dystopian novels. The second chapter studies previous research written on the same topic as this one, the early events in Animal Farm and their effect on shaping the farm, and the significance of freedom within the farm. The third chapter consists of demonstrating the fundamental changes that contributed to the decline of the farm into its eventual dystopian nature, and a conclusion on the matter. The paper uses a textual and historical approaches in analyzing the texts of the novella.  Keywords: utopia, dystopia, orwell, labour, liberty, tyranny, commandment, censorship
