Abstract

This study investigated the phenomena of code-switching and code-mixing as employed by Boy William and Valencia Tanoesoedibjo, focusing on identifying their types, underlying reasons, and contributing factors. Adopting a qualitative research design, the study analyzed non-numerical data, specifically the spoken utterances of Boy and Valencia in a vlog, where instances of code-switching and code-mixing occur. The classification of code-switching follows the framework proposed by Poplack (1980), while the identification of code-mixing types relies on Hoffman’s (1991) model. Additionally, Hoffman’s (1991) framework is utilized to explore the reasons behind their use of code-switching and code-mixing. To further examine the influencing factors, the study employs the theoretical framework of Bhatia and Ritchie (2004). The findings indicate that Boy and Valencia employed five of the seven identified reasons for code-switching and code-mixing: discussing specific topics, expressing emphasis, using interjections, clarifying speech through repetition, and ensuring clarity for the interlocutor. Regarding the influencing factors, the analysis reveals that participant roles and relationships, situational contexts, message-intrinsic features, and attitudes towards language, including dominance and security, are significant contributors. Moreover, an additional factor identified in the study is their prior experience of living overseas, which further shapes their linguistic choices. Abstract

Abstract As a language learning resource, an English as a foreign language (EFL) or English as a second language (ESL) textbook plays a pivotal role in students’ pragmatic development. There has been a plethora of studies conducted to evaluate the quality of textbooks across the countries regarding the proportional content of pragmatic uses. However, there is still no evidence of the study in Indonesia. Thus, to fill this void, the study aims to explore types of speech acts included in an EFL coursebook for senior high school students and to what extent those speech acts meet students’ learning needs. This study employs a qualitative content analysis method, with one nationally mandated English textbook for senior high school students chosen and analysed. The analysis included categorizing dialogues in the textbook using Searle's (1976) Speech Act Theory, which comprises directive, commissive, representative/assertive, declarative, and expressive speech acts. The research findings indicate that the pragmatic content in the coursebook is still inadequate. This inadequacy may affect students’ pragmatic development since proportional use of all types of speech acts would help learners use an appropriate speech act in an appropriate social setting. There is a call for more studies on the evaluation of EFL textbooks which use textbooks from all grades at senior high school level. Keyword: EFL textbook, pragmatics, speech act analysis

Abstract

The paper aims to examine the cast of artificial intelligence (AI) character in solving the problem of love and belonging needs in I am Mother film. Today, the arise of artificial intelligence (AI) has brought controversial debate among society about ethical consideration and psychological problems. One of the concerns is that the integration of AI with character may open up new approaches and innovation toward AI. The data are qualitatively-described focusing on psychological problems of main character using the third level of the hierarchy of human needs of Abraham Harold Maslow. The data are collected from dialogue, visual capture, and cinematography of I am Mother film. The study reveals that AI has a significant influence on the main character's sense of loss of love and belonging. In this film, the main character undergoes loss of love and belonging needs in four forms, family relationships, friendships, romantic relationships, community, and social group. Consequently, the loss of love and belonging has affected the main character’s psychology, feelings of loneliness, isolation, and emotional instability. Fortunately, the main character (Daughter) can overcome her psychological problems, such as creating a close relationship with Mother, improving her self-development, having empathy and caring for their environment, searching for the truth in the outside world, and finding the truth and where she belongs. The study concluded that AI’s emotion still needs to be controlled and trained to make up something, such as how to express emotion and feeling because the AI doesn’t understand the context since they are still need human involvement in its process of development. Abstract

This article aims to explore the intersection between comparative literature and adaptation studies, examining the theoretical frameworks and practical applications that underlie this fascinating field. By analysing the transformation of a classic work into various media, we will uncover the mechanisms of change and the cultural significance embedded in these adaptations. This article examines the film adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula by Francis Ford Coppola. A comparative analysis is conducted on the novel and film to identify significant changes that occurred in the adaptation process. These changes include the addition of scenes, character modifications, and changes to the plot. One of the main changes is the addition of a romantic element between Dracula and Mina, which is not present in the original novel. This change transforms the theme of gothic horror into a more nuanced tragic love story. The study concludes that the film adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula involves a number of significant changes that alter the meaning and experience of the narrative. Further research is needed to understand the motivations and impact of changes in the adaptation process, especially from a cultural and sociological perspective. In addition, a broader comparative study could be conducted by comparing different adaptations of Dracula to see the patterns of change that occur over time. It is also important to understand how changes in adaptation affect audience reception. Adaptation research methodology needs to be continuously developed by integrating digital humanities approaches and new technologies to provide a more comprehensive perspective. More systematic documentation of the decision-making process in adaptation is also needed to understand the factors that influence changes from novel to film, so as to provide deeper insight into the process of adapting literary works to visual media. Abstract

This study explored the phenomenon of maxim flouting in the utterances of John Terry and Ashley Cole during the Dubai Eye 103.8 Sports Podcast. It tried to describe flouting maxims by John Terry in the podcast and the similarities and differences between the flouting maxim in the utterances of John Terry and Ashley Cole. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed to analyze and interpret the data, utilizing Grice's (1975) theory of conversational maxims as the theoretical framework to explain instances of maxim flouting in the cooperative principle observed in the speakers' utterances. Data collection was conducted through document analysis. The findings revealed that John Terry's utterances contained several instances of maxim flouting: 25 occurrences of flouting the maxim of quantity (64.8%), 1 instance of flouting the maxim of quality (3.7%), 8 instances of flouting the maxim of relation (20.7%), and 4 instances of flouting the maxim of manner (10.8%). In contrast, Ashley Cole's utterances included 21 occurrences of flouting the maxim of quantity (80.7%), 2 instances each of flouting the maxims of quality and relation (7.7% each), and 1 instance of flouting the maxim of manner (3.9%). The study also identified a key similarity: both speakers predominantly flouted the maxim of quantity in their utterances. However, a notable difference was observed in the frequency and distribution of the flouted maxims between the two speakers. Keyword: flouting maxim, cooperative principle, podcast, pragmatics

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the codes used, the types, and the reasons of the use of code switching found in the conversational expression in You and Insecurities novel by Ayya. The researcher analyzed the types of code switching using the theory proposed by Poplack (1980) and the reasons of code switching based on the Hoffmann’s (1991) theory. The findings showed that the characters employed three languages in the conversations, those are Indonesian, English, and Sundanese. The most frequent types of code switching found is inter-sentential switching. It can be seen that the characters in the novel have good English skill because they have the ability to intentionally switch the language from Indonesian to English and vice versa. The most frequent reasons of code switching found is talking about particular topic. The characters employed code switching in their conversation to talk or discuss a certain topic because they feel free and comfortable to express their feelings and to make the communication easy to understand. By analyzing the codes, the types, and the reasons of code switching found in You and Insecurities novel using sociolinguistics theories, the researcher realized that a sociolinguistics approach can reveal how language in a novel reflects different social groups, the dialects and languages used by the characters, and how the social and cultural context influences the narrative. The communication style of urban people of Jakarta, in particular of the young executive group identity, is reflected in the studied novel that is You and Insecurities by Ayya. Abstract

The word formation process is concerned with how new words are produced, whether through the modification of preexisting terms or through total invention, which later becomes a component of the "Stonks Memes" language used on the internet. The two goals of this study are as follows: the first is to identify the slang term's altered meaning in "Stonks Memes," and the second is to highlight the process modifications and changes that appear in the online varieties of "Stonks Memes." This method, which classified data based on morphology theory and used Yule's theory as the primary one for analyzing word formation and morphological system, was descriptive in nature. The word-formation process occurred because of the necessity of the stonk meme format, which required the term to be transformed to convey a hilarious connotation. This study found four forms of word-formation processes, including back-formation, coinage, borrowing, and blending. It is concluded that the word in question was purposely altered by the meme developer to fit in the stonk memes framework, changing both the word's sound and its meaning. Keywords: word-formation process, slang, memes, stonks, internet
