Abstract

To maximize shareholder wealth, management must strive to increase the firm value. Thus, this study aims to investigate the impact of risk-taking and ESG on firm value. The result of this research will explain whether the firm value as measured by Tobin's Q can be influenced by the level of risk-taking. In addition, this study also explores whether ESG affects firm value, and whether ESG can be used as a moderating variable in risk-taking and firm value relationships. The study period covered 2014 through 2020, and the research sample included 30 companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX). Banking companies were excluded from the research sample due to differences in business models and levels of regulation. We use a fixed effect model of panel data regression in data processing, equipped with robust standard error. The first finding establishes that excessive risk-taking behavior exists at the managerial level, and it has a significant negative impact on firm value. Then, the second finding results in a significant negative effect of ESG on firm value, explaining ESG as a burdensome commitment to the firm value. Lastly, the final finding demonstrates that ESG does not significantly moderate the relationship between risk-taking and firm value. These findings are justified by the poor quality and insufficient transparency of ESG in Indonesian companies that have failed to limit excessive risk-taking in corporate management.

Abstract

The emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic has intensified business competition, resulting in stability and decreased stock exchange trading. Stakeholders become more cautious and selective when making decisions. Therefore, companies must disclose quality financial statements to stakeholders in making accurate decisions. This study aims to re-examine the effect of ESG application on company value in Indonesia empirically. The independent variable in this study is the ESG score, where the value of each component is the result of research conducted by Thomas Reuters. In addition, this study also used a dummy variable, where the reference is an ESG index. The results showed that ESG scores and ESG indicepositively influenceon company value. This is also supported by cross-tabulation, which shows differences in ESG scores against companies that are included and not included in the ESG index. The application of ESG to companies can minimize information asymmetry, as well as potential conflicts with stakeholders. In addition, ESG indices are used to address stakeholder concerns about ESG issues, which can signal that it allows stakeholders to be more accurate in assessing companies based on standards specified in the index.

China’s soft power is declining. Previous studies find that the United States’ narrative attack on China’s credibility is the main cause of this decline. This research aims to identify stakeholders between two countries that involves in the narrative battle based on their sentiments and ability to be a key reference in particular issues related to China’s soft power. Using Social Network Analysis and appraisal theory, this research maps stakeholder positions in five quadrants: Advocate, Follower, Opponent, Blocker, and Indifferent. The key findings of this research are on stakeholders and the narratives that are founded in Advocate and Follower quadrants. Stakeholders founded in Advocate and Follower quadrants such as US scientists, NGOs, and mass media show China’s public diplomacy is running well. Different from US government stakeholders, a stakeholder in Advocate and Follower has positive sentiment about China’s Political System and economic development.
