Abstract

This article focused on the gender differences in English Language Learning. It discovers students’ learning styles as affected by the notions about men’s and women’s differences in communication. The data were randomly collected from ten male and ten female students of the English department of Tanjungpura University Pontianak. The population was the third-semester students of English department students. They were given an online questionnaire through Google Form. It is to find out their attitudes towards speaking to a different gender, strategy to express an opinion, group work preferences, and activeness/passiveness in the class. The findings showed some factors affect the different styles of female and male students in learning English. The result of the data indicated that more females felt reluctant to speak English to a different gender. Besides, it can also affect the successful strategies of English students in learning English. The great potency of female students to be ashamed, nervous, and women’s language can affect their achievement in English. Meanwhile, male students as influenced by their need to challenge and maintain strength as men and can use speaking English ability as a way to show their status as men.

Abstract

This study aims to discover the benefits of using the Tik-Tok application in writing descriptive text. Then, find out if the Tik-Tok application helps students write and solve problems they find while writing. The purpose of this survey is the result of a 10th-grade study at SMK Yatpi Godong. SMK Yatpi Godong has 32 10th graders. In this case, researchers used a questionnaire that consisted of open-form questions to collect survey data. This study used qualitative research, and the data was collected using words and photographs rather than numbers. The researchers occupied open-form questions to get information from students and then changed the survey results to percentages. Last, examining and interpreting all the data. From the impact of the data analysis, 86,36% of the students said that the TikTok application had advantages in learning the descriptive text material. On the other hand, 13,64% of the students replied that the TikTok application did not give them many benefits in their learning. 63,64% of the students answered that they said the TikTok application helped them study the descriptive text. In contrast, 36,36% of the students answered that the TikTok application did not help in their studies. Last, 72,73% of the students had problems writing descriptive text using the TikTok application. However, 27,27% of them said they had no issues learning descriptive text using the TikTok application because they had mastered the materials.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to recognize errors in the sentence structure of students' paragraph writing tasks. Quantitative research is applied to find out what type of errors and frequent errors are made by students in writing English paragraphs. There were 20 students' paragraph writing analyzed on the aspect of the verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, pronoun agreement, sentence fragments, and run-on sentences/ comma splices. The result showed that the total for all kinds of errors made by the students in this assignment of paragraph writing was 82 errors. The two frequent errors occur in verb tense (23%) and run-on sentences (27%).

Abstract

Teaching media as supporting facilities is one of the important parts that must be provided because it improves teaching performance in implementing the learning activity. In connection with technology developments, teachers can choose one of the technology media that suits the teaching objective or motivates the students to be autonomous learners. Therefore, this study attempts to promote the possibility of using Youtube videos in the teaching-learning process, especially in teaching intercultural communication to EFL learners. By using Youtube videos, teachers can show the cultural context that is relevant to the language being taught so it can provide an interactive learning environment and motivate students to learn faster and better.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the learning process while using video conferences and to find out the impact of using video conferences in online learning. This research involved the 7th-semester students of the English Department of the University of PGRI Semarang. The method used is qualitative descriptive by providing an open questionnaire and in-depth interviews to collect the data. The results of this study indicated that according to the students, the use of video conferences is very helpful for teaching and learning activities in online learning, and it is also more practical and safer to be used for learners during the pandemic. Then, the impact of using video conferences from the students’ perception can be identified from the positive and negative impacts. The positive impacts of using video conferences can be seen from point of view of time effectiveness, student communication, students’ participation during the teaching and learning activity, and student achievement. Meanwhile, the negative impacts of using video conferences can be seen in the lack of understanding of the materials and the high cost for students’ needs.

Abstract

Abstract- This research purposed to describe the students' improvement in vocabulary by using word search puzzles. This was classroom action research with two cycles conducted on the first semester students of Bina Sarana Informatika Pontianak University consisting of 40 students. This was the classroom action research. Planning, acting, observing, and reflecting were conducted in each cycle. Field notes, observation checklists, interviews, and individual tests were used as the tools to collect the data. Qualitative and quantitative analysis would be used to analyze the data. The finding of this research showed that the use of word search puzzles could build the students' motivation and decrease students' reluctance to find a new vocabulary. It also experienced students to identify the word which allowed the students to have a better understanding of vocabulary. The word search puzzle led the students to build brains by finding the hidden word and improving vocabulary mastery. It was an effective way for the teacher in teaching vocabulary.

Abstract

This research aims at describing and interpreting the deictic expressions of personal deixis in the Gift of the Magi short story. This research specifically examined the appearance of personal deixis and the interpretations of the context. The data's primary source was the short story's utterances and sentences. In conducting the research, the researchers employed a descriptive quantitative design where the primary data was in the form of percentages of personal deixis that appeared in the short story, followed by their interpretation. From the analysis, there found 231 personal deixes in the short story consisting of 43 first-person deixes (18,61%), 14 second-person deixis (6,06%), and 174 third-person deixes (75,32%). Referring to these results, it was interpreted that the author of the Gift of the Magi told the story from his point of view to bring the readers to objectively understand the characters, conflicts, and ideas of the story. The author also would like to project his identity as he knows the whole story and the characterization of each character, including thoughts, feelings, and opinions. By having so, the readers get much help in grabbing the essence of the story completely. In short, understanding the role of personal deixis in a short story is essential to comprehend the detail of the story.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the process and learning activities of implementing PjBL in writing based on literature and students' writing performance after implementing PjBL. The qualitative method is used in this study. Data collection used observation checklists and interviews. Data is analyzed with represented, interpreted meaning, and reflected. The results show that the lecturer has carried out the stages of PjBL activities in accordance with theoretical references, starting from the planning stage to concluding. On the other hand, the results of students' writing performance showed an increase. This increase can be seen in the learning outcomes after implementing PjBL. Then, implementing PjBL helps students determine topics and ideas for them to put into their writing. The collaborative work offered by PjBL is also beneficial for students in writing. Finally, PjBL is recommended to be applied in learning, developing the targeted primary skills and skills included in "success skills."

Abstract

This research aims to foster students' engagement through small group discussions. The focus is on implementing group discussion strategies on classroom performance and students' achievement. A qualitative design was used along with the observations and interviews, and enriched with a small group discussion teaching framework. The result showed that small group discussions positively contribute to students' involvement in the classroom, enhance critical thinking, and raise motivation. The activities provide opportunities to increase their upbeat view of learning English. Hopefully, the result can be a practical suggestion for lecturers or teachers to maximize the students' active participation in ELF classes.

Abstract

English children's storybooks are real sources for children's language acquisition. A student's preference for reading books is determined by their teachers, who should be able to convey English subjects via a variety of media, including children's storybooks. The majority of English teachers in elementary schools are graduates of the English Education Study Program (EESP) who have completed the Teaching English for Young Learners (TEYL) subject. Thus, this study aims to implement an online learning application known as storyweaver.org.in in Teaching English Young Learners (TEYL) subject for EESP who are teachers want-to-be in the future. The qualitative method is employed here. Overall, the findings showed that planning, implementing, and evaluating can be three stages in using storyweaver.org.in in a classroom. Creating and using storybooks occurred to improve Foreign Language skills and cultural customs for young learners who find that storybooks are simple and pleasing methods to learn their culture.
