Abstract

A major problem frequently faced by the public is clean and healthy living behaviors (PHBS). According to the Indonesian Ministry of Health in 2014, health can be achieved by changing unhealthy behaviors into healthy ones and creating a health-supportive environment. Effective measures include handwashing with soap and environmental inspections. This activity aims to increase public awareness of the importance of clean and healthy living behavior (PHBS), while also introducing the dangers of microbiological contamination that can occur on hands and water. Community service activities are carried out through the stages of pre-test, education, post-test, sampling, and sample examination. Of the 34 respondents, the majority experienced a significant reduction in hand bacteria, with 21 showing a reduction in hand bacteria of more than 70% and some reaching 99–100%. Well water examinations at several public facilities for Pekingan village residents showed the presence of Coliform bacteria exceeding the safe limits according to the Ministry of Health Regulation, indicating that the water is not suitable for direct consumption due to possible contamination by domestic waste, septic tank seepage, or poor environmental sanitation. The conclusion of this Community Service activity is that there is an increase in respondents' understanding and an increase in their ability to practice proper handwashing. Water sanitation in public facilities needs to be considered and improved because it should not be used for consumption.

Abstract

Access to clean water in Indonesia remains a challenge, especially in rural areas and educational environments such as Islamic boarding schools. Consuming contaminated air in the long term from shallow wells can cause damage to organs, such as the kidneys, liver, and digestive tract. Therefore, the availability of sufficient and affordable clean water is very important for the survival and well-being of society. The approach in the Islamic boarding school environment, through community service activities and conducting counseling related to clean water processing and its relationship to preventing organ damage, is very important to create collective awareness in maintaining the availability of clean water. The implementation was carried out on May 17, 2025, at the Al-Jihad Islamic Boarding School in Surabaya. The series of activities began with filling out a pre-test, counseling through interactive lectures, and then continued with filling out a post-test to transmit the students' understanding after participating in this activity. The activity showed an increase in students' knowledge about water quality (management) and its impact on health (p<0.05). Providing counseling to students at the Al Jihad Islamic Boarding School in Surabaya was able to increase students' knowledge about water quality (management) and its impact on health.

Abstract

Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is often caused by an unhealthy lifestyle, including lack of physical activity. Many Islamic boarding school students are unaware of the importance of physical activity to prevent coronary heart disease. Traditional Indonesian games, which are rich in cultural values, can be an effective means to increase physical activity while reintroducing cultural heritage to the younger generation. This activity aims to determine the effect of providing knowledge about the introduction of traditional games as an increase in physical activity in preventing coronary heart disease. The activity was carried out by providing knowledge. The level of change in knowledge was obtained by differentiating the results of the pre-test and post-test. Data calculations using statistical calculations were then carried out with a non-parametric analysis of the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The activity showed an increase in students' knowledge about coronary heart disease and its prevention (p<0.05) and an increase in students' knowledge about the use of traditional games in increasing physical activity (p<0.05). Providing health education to students at the Al Jihad Islamic Boarding School in Surabaya was able to increase students' knowledge of the benefits of traditional games as an increase in physical activity to prevent coronary heart disease.

Abstract

Pulmonary Tuberculosis remains a major public health problem in Indonesia. The elderly are a vulnerable group due to decreased immunity and comorbidities, while stigma and low awareness often hinder early detection. This Community Service activity aimed to improve elderly understanding of Pulmonary Tuberculosis prevention and early detection through interactive education and anamnestic screening. The innovation of this program lies in the use of the N-Gain Score to evaluate the effectiveness of health education at the community level. The activity involved health education through interactive lectures, discussions, and educational media (PowerPoint and booklet), followed by anamnestic screening using a structured questionnaire. A total of 29 elderly participants from Wonocolo District were included as a high-risk group. Effectiveness was assessed using pre-tests and post-tests with 10 multiple-choice questions, analyzed using the N-Gain Score. Results showed an increase in the average knowledge score from 70.34 to 94.48 (gain of 24.14 points). Fourteen participants achieved a high N-Gain category, 13 were moderate, and none were low. No Pulmonary Tuberculosis symptoms were detected during screening. This program effectively improved health literacy and awareness among the elderly. Supporting community-based efforts toward Pulmonary Tuberculosis elimination.

Abstract

The nutritional intake of students in Islamic boarding schools during Ramadan is often dominated by carbohydrates, with limited attention to balanced macro- and micronutrient consumption. This imbalance may affect health and learning concentration. This community engagement program aimed to enhance students’ understanding of balanced nutrition during fasting based on physiological principles. The activity was conducted at Pondok Pesantren Assalafi Al Fithrah Surabaya through three phases: initial survey, interactive educational sessions, and follow-up evaluation. Thirty-one students participated in both pretest and posttest assessments. The results showed an increase in the average knowledge score from 54.19 to 66.77 (p = 0.005), indicating a statistically significant improvement. The participatory educational approach proved effective in enhancing students’ nutritional literacy. The program suggests that physiology-based nutrition education can serve as a strategic approach to improving health awareness in Islamic boarding schools. Integrating nutrition education into institutional food management policies is recommended to promote sustainable healthy eating habits.

Abstract

Vitamin D (VitD) has been studied for its role in the immune system, particularly in regulating the body's inflammatory response. Vitamin D deficiency can increase the risk of respiratory tract infections, which can trigger asthma exacerbations. In asthma patients, VitD can act as an immunomodulator in respiratory epithelial cells. The objective of this community service program is to increase students' knowledge about the benefits of vitamin D supplementation in the recognition and management of asthma among students at the Zainul Hasan Genggong Islamic boarding school in Probolinggo. This community service project used an observational analytical method to process questionnaire data. The participants were 40 male and female students at Zainul Hasan Genggong Islamic boarding school. This activity was conducted using a lecture, discussion, and question-and-answer approach. The results of the Wilcoxon signed-rank test showed an increase in the students' knowledge, with a pre-test average score of 30 and a post-test average score of 65, indicating a significant increase (p-value <0.001). The conclusion drawn is that students can understand asthma and the role of vitamin D supplementation in asthma management after receiving counseling, and it is hoped this education will encourage students to adopt healthy lifestyles, recognize asthma symptoms early, and take appropriate action.

Abstract

People working in agricultural environments with high humidity levels are at greater risk of exposure to pathogenic fungi, which can trigger infections of the skin, nails, and respiratory tract, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems. On the other hand, the elderly are vulnerable to health decline, including autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which can cause joint inflammation, tissue damage, and progressive disability. This community service activity aims to increase public knowledge about the dangers of pathogenic fungal contamination and to conduct early detection of RA through Rheumatoid Factor (RF) testing. Education was delivered interactively using lectures, discussions, and visual media, accompanied by pre- and post-tests, as well as RF testing using the latex agglutination method. This community service activity was attended by 33 participants. Results showed an increase in knowledge from 58% to 91% after the education, with all 33 RF test participants receiving non-reactive results. This program demonstrates that the combination of education and simple testing can increase public preventive awareness and is suitable for adaptation in other areas with similar risk characteristics.
