Abstract

The concept of "freedom" in philosophy has many interpretations and variants depending on the framework of philosophical thought followed by its thinkers. In general, freedom refers to an individual's ability to act, think, and make decisions in the absence of unwanted restrictions or pressures. The problems of freedom and necessity (or determinism) are among the most widely debated philosophical problems. This problem arises in human history when people question whether their actions may be determined by factors unknown to them and beyond their control or power, so that human freedom is actually determined or limited. This article aims to examine and discuss the thought of Simone Weil, a 20th-century French Socialist philosopher and activist, who identifies three types of necessity that affect human freedom, in the context of this deterministic world and how men can become free in every kind of necessity. The method used in this study is literature review and analysis, with the aim of showing, through analysis of Weil's writings and philosophical thought, how Weil synthesizes the idea of freedom with acceptance of human limitations. The results show Simone Weil's unique view that presents a conception of freedom that involves awareness, responsibility, and self-transformation in a deterministic world.

Abstract

The main focus of this paper is to explore the philosophical values embedded in the "teing tinu" ritual of the Manggarai community, elaborated through the practice of Xiao (孝) in Confucian teachings. The teing tinu ritual signifies the responsibility of children towards their elderly parents. Additionally, this ritual serves as an expression of filial devotion, respect, and gratitude of children towards their parents for all the kindness and services rendered throughout their lives. It stands as a local wisdom that needs to be understood and acknowledged by the younger generation. Unfortunately, this expectation seems to be fading due to the younger generation's lack of attention to the teing tinu ritual, influenced by the rapid advancement of technology. The pragmatic and indifferent attitude of the younger generation in Manggarai has led to the erosion of the meaning and values inherent in the teing tinu ritual. Conversely, the prevalence of a culture of violence, rudeness, quick-triggered emotions, and social anarchy is beginning to permeate the lives of the younger generation in Manggarai. Amidst the challenges of life and the unstoppable flow of time, the author feels compelled to delve into and attempt to extract the meaning and values within Manggarai culture, particularly the teing tinu culture, as an effort to rekindle the adherence of the younger Manggarai generation to the prevailing norms of respect and courtesy. The author employs a literature review method and critical readings of Manggarai culture and Confucius' works, specifically focusing on the practice of Xiao in his writings. This research finds that various values in the teing tinu ritual are closely related to the values in the Xiao practice of Confucian teachings.

Abstract

This article aims to explore criticisms of positivism in the philosophy of science and its relevance to the development of public administration science. The study employs a descriptive-qualitative approach through a literature review to investigate the conception of positivism, its criticisms, and its application in public administration. The results indicate that in the context of public administration, the complexity of phenomena cannot be simply reduced by positivist approaches. Therefore, the reconstructive approach emerges as an intriguing alternative, offering a more holistic, interpretative, and critical perspective in understanding phenomena and practices in public administration. The application of the reconstructive approach in public administration studies involves critical analysis of institutions and policies, interpretative case studies, analysis of power and interests, and collaboration among stakeholders in the policy-making and implementation processes.

Abstract

This research examines the problem of evil and its relationship with the omnipotence of God from the perspective of Advaita Vedanta. Evil exists, and on the other hand, God also exists with various attributes of omnipotence, such as being all-perfect, all-good, all-powerful, and so on. This type of research is a literature study, using the hermeneutic method. The aim of this research is to conduct a philosophical study of the problem of evil and the relationship of God in the world. Based on the research findings, it is known that the world and its empirical phenomena are a projection of maya, and ignorance (avidya) is the cause of the duality of evil. Individuals who are  enveloped in  maya and avidya perceive this  empirical world as real, whereas only Brahman is the ultimate reality. Sri Sankara asserts that the concept of a personal God (Saguna Brahman) is not the highest. The highest Brahman is Nirguna Brahman, an absolute reality without qualities, which is described through negation as neti-neti (not this, not that). The conflict in human understanding of a perfect God has created an imperfect world and the existence of evil in the face of a God with attributes of omnipotence, occurs at the level of limited human thinking. The limitations of the human mind in comprehending the unmanifested lead humans to only grasp a manifest God.

Abstract

This article discusses the origins of the psychometric paradigm and its reliance on the notion that mental attributes can be measured. Galton's assumption that mental attributes can be discerned through definite actions in response to definite situations is misguided. This article highlights the ternary nature of causality, involving causes, effects, and specific causal fields. The same cause may not produce the same effect in different causal fields, and different causes may produce the same effect in different causal fields. The relationships between observable measures and aspects of character are unclear, and indirect indices of mental attributes are inherently ambiguous. This article focuses on Francis Galton's role in establishing these beliefs and argues that his reasoning was flawed and influenced by Pythagoras' philosophy of science and his desire to present eugenics as science. This paper aims to describe Sir Francis Galton's theory regarding the science of measurement and its relevance to psychometrics. Using the literature review method on various sources (scientific articles and textbooks) related to the topic of discussion. Overall, this article challenges the assumption that mental attributes are inherently quantitative and  argues  for  a  more  nuanced understanding of  measurement in psychometrics.

Abstract

The  current  global  society  is  increasingly filled  with  various  complex  problems.  War,  the phenomenon of the "Double Effect of Modernity," poverty, world hunger, and even the global climate crisis has significantly exacerbated global conditions. This situation urges humanity to urgently rebuild the awareness of living together in the spirit of peace for the sake of human welfare itself. Peace becomes a very important value in building human life globally to avoid competitive and apathetic situations among nations. To explore the understanding of reality and existence amid the dynamics of the modern world, Alfred North Whitehead's metaphysical philosophy provides very helpful guidance for humans to introspect on the plurality of each individual's existence. Whitehead's concept of "Process and Reality" depicts reality as a series of continuously changing processes within a metaphysical unity. This understanding allows us to see peace as a result of the integration of humanity in a world of mutual dependence and interconnectedness. Moreover, religion inherently plays an important role in the effort to shape global peace by inspiring values such as justice and humanity. This research is qualitative. Using the literature study method, the author implements Whitehead's thoughts on the current concrete situation. Whitehead's metaphysical perspective opens up a viewpoint on peace as a unifying factor for the world holistically, particularly as an effort to face geopolitical challenges and global conflicts. The purpose of this research is to encourage public introspection on the importance of a harmonious awareness of collective life that implies a spirit of peace.

Abstract

The serious problem of waste has become a major catalyst in the current global environmental crisis. This challenge has prompted various groups to formulate concrete solutions to deal with the negative impacts of suboptimal waste management. In the digital era, the link between value philosophy and digital content is becoming increasingly important. Digital content, especially those spread through social media, contains values that require in-depth exploration to understand its ethical implications for the transformation of the mindset and behavior of the wider community. This study aims to find and describe the values present in the action and publication of waste management content by Pandawara Group from the perspective of Max Scheler's philosophy of value. The method used is qualitative research with a descriptive analysis approach. The results of this study illustrate a number of values reflected in the action and publication of Pandawara Group's content related to waste management. First, the emergence of happiness value, which is found in the positive impact felt by media users in general when interacting with Pandawara Group's content. Secondly, there is the emergence of vital value, which is reflected in efforts to reawaken awareness of public welfare and health. Third, there is an evocation of spiritual concern for the surrounding environment for social media users by showing the link between the spiritual dimension and environmental preservation. Finally, at the highest stage, the emergence of sacred values, which are reflected in respect for the rights of nature that must be preserved. Pandawara Group has transformed into an entity that not only acts as an agent of change, but also has a significant positive impact in creating values of awareness, wisdom, and prosperity among the community in an effort to preserve the environment.

Abstract

This article attempts to elaborate on John Dewey's views on the practical-pragmatic role of religion, and looks at the importance of reinterpreting traditional ideas of religion, such as faith and God, so that people would not get false conception about religion. Thus, using a critical analysis method of literature references and through the views of John Dewey, this paper aims to provide an understanding of the strategic role of religion in society, apart from being a system of societal beliefs that shapes individual ethical behavior, as well as a basis for building societal morals, which through this understanding, it is hoped that we can stem secularization which is increasingly diminishing the role of religion in society. Religion can be said to be society's moral compass which helps construct society's ethical life. As time and technology develop, religion also develops through various forms in an effort to adapt. The recent problem is that society from a secular perspective tends to assume that morality can be achieved outside of religion. Secularization is inevitable because religion is seen as something that is often used for political purposes rather than as a moral guidance for society. Therefore, religion today is seen more as a private matter, and should not be included in public affairs. This phenomenon is adapted to the view of secularism which emphasizes rational and logical thinking, while religion is closely related to sacred values that are supernatural. The conclusion is that through Dewey's Pragmatism, we can see that religion pragmatically is a moral guideline for society and a belief system that carries the values of fairness, justice, peace, so as to create a dynamic and harmonious society amidst the various differences that exist.
