Abstract

The goal of this study is to discuss how project learning is being implemented at the driving school with a variety of obstacles to overcome and solutions to make it more efficient. This research uses case study method. Data collection techniques were conducted by interview, observation, and documentation. The data analysis technique uses the Miles and Huberman case study model. The results of the study show that project learning in this school has been carried out in two rounds in one year. In its implementation, several challenges were found, namely the incompatibility between group members, the lack of synchronization of the mindset between the central government and local governments, and financing in the implementation of project learning. The school's strategy to answer these challenges includes holding regular meetings between students, homeroom teachers, and BK teachers. In the meeting, reinforcement and motivation were given about the importance of working together. To make learning outcomes more appropriate for the learning environment, schools conduct independent assessments of the outcomes. At the start of the new school year, funds for student development are used to fund project activities.

Abstract

Backwards design (BD) starts from the desired results or standards and then moved to the evidence of learning obtained from assessment (Tighe & Wiggins, 1999). Despite the conventional trend that designing a curriculum starts by considering the input, a backward design has begun to gain attention as many researchers were interested to study it. This article aims to explore the implementation of backward design in the EFL context. This study applies a qualitative method by analyzing various documents related to the application of backward design in the context of EF with the thematic method of analysis. Several studies were reviewed and analyzed to problematize and make meaning of the implementation of BD in EFL classrooms and its impacts. The backward design can be implemented at various levels ranging from elementary up to university levels. This model can be integrated into the lesson plan, materials development, and classroom instructions and activities. In addition, BD gave a positive impact on students’ motivation, teachers’ professional development, and students’ creative and thinking skills.

Abstract

The field of English language teaching (ELT) has long been a fertile soil for native-speakerism where the native English teachers (NESTs) enjoy the privilege to be crowned as the ideal teachers of the language.  Such belief is ingrained in all aspects of ELT including English language testing such as in International English language Testing System (IELTS), where the presence of non-native English examiners is extremely rare. Departing from this phenomenon, this study, conducted as a narrative case study, embarked to counter such claim by looking into the professional credentials and experiences of three non-native English teachers (NNESTs) who, against all odds, become official IELTS examiners in Indonesia. The data of the study were gathered through interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings show that the participants develop native-like level of fluency as the result of their investment in developing English skills through engaging in English mediated communication, interactions and learning in private English language institutions (PELIs). Moreover, their success is also attributed to their international teaching certificates which opened doors for them to compete with NESTs. Thus, this study seeks to inspire NNESTs to continuously develop their teaching credentials and to boost their confidence as legitimate teachers of English.

Abstract

The majority of learning in Universities is adopting the Direct Instructional (DI) approach. The DI approach is a lecturer-centered approach. Howover, this approach tends to be boring for the students as it is very tedious and dominated by the lecturer. Moreover, this approach limits students in developing the habit of problem-solving and creative thinking in learning processes. Therefore, it is very important to develop a new innovative approach in teaching activity that gives students more opportunities to be involved in the learning process. Direct Problem-Based Learning with the utilisation of Multimedia (mDPBL) is developed as an alternative teaching approach to eliminate the disadvantages, especially in the limitations in students' creative thinking. This research measures students’ creative thinking skills after being taught using mDPBL approach. This research uses quasi-experimental method. 276 students involved in this research. The result of the measurement shows that the students’ controlled group has an average score of 18.014 while the latter, the experimental group has an average score of 19.669. Based on the t-test analysis conducted in both groups, they have shown a difference of 1.655 in average score. Therefore, there is an indication that the mDPBL approach contributes to improving students’ creative thinking skills.

Abstract

This study intends to summarize the findings of research on word problem solving errors made by students as well as the types of errors made by students that have been increasingly prevalent in reports over the past five years. The strategy employed is a descriptive method, which entails examining current symptoms using information gathered from numerous prior research and compiled using a meta-ethnography approach. The goal of the study is to provide a report on the findings of research conducted by teachers and former mathematics education students who looked at word problem solving errors made by students. The summary's findings demonstrate that the following types of student errors are errors: Understanding definitions, applying ideas, methods, and strategies; Determining the Knowledge Aspect of Understanding and Applying Story Problems; Representing Information from Story Questions into Mathematical Sentences; 4) applying concepts to specific materials without understanding how concepts relate to one another or the significance of symbols; 5) Students in drawing conclusions about the outcomes of problem-solving or errors in writing the final solution.

Abstract

We have often heard of meta-analytical research related to the problem based learning model itself, but this time the researcher wants to examine the problem based learning model with its novelty form, namely in terms of the media used. This meta-analysis study was conducted with the aim of knowing the total effect size and analyzing the problem-based learning model assisted by media on critical thinking skills, where this meta-analysis research used 10 research articles from 980 scientific articles found on Harzing's Publish or Peerish platforms that meet exclusion and inclusion criteria. The results of the meta-analysis showed that the problem-based learning model with media-assisted learning on critical thinking skills did not have specific provisions in learning materials, but for its application it was more effective at the elementary level with the aid of concrete media as evidenced by a high effect size value of 1.042.
