Abstract

Visually impaired (VI) students in inclusive classrooms often struggle with understanding mathematical concepts. A limited availability of suitable and user-friendly learning materials exacerbates this challenge. This community service program aimed to enhance the capacity of junior high school mathematics teachers in Sleman Regency to develop effective, recycled-material-based learning media for VI students. A two-day training was conducted for 36 mathematics teachers, encompassing lectures, discussions, and media development workshops. Training outcomes demonstrated a significant improvement in teacher understanding, as evidenced by the post-test average rising from 54.7 to 77.2. Moreover, teachers successfully created 18 innovative learning media for immediate classroom application.

Abstract

Common challenges in institutional learning include a lack of learning media for educators to deliver content effectively. This community service addresses this issue by providing learning resources such as busy book ‘Clean the Teeth’, creation blocks, interactive fruits quiz, and story book ‘Ablution and Tayamum’. The goal is to supplement educators' materials for teaching tooth brushing, healthy eating, ablution procedures, tayamum, and interactive games to children, thereby enhancing knowledge acquisition. This service involves implementing these media into the learning process. Results indicate increased student knowledge of tooth brushing, healthy foods, ablution, and tayamum procedures, as well as improved engagement with interactive media.

Abstract

High cholesterol is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease often overlooked by the public. This community service aimed to increase public awareness among members of the Pusaka Aji Kalibayem Healthy Heart Club. By enhancing public knowledge about the importance of cholesterol checks, this initiative sought to prevent and early detect cardiovascular disease. The program encompassed health education, cholesterol screenings, and health consultations. A comprehensive cholesterol check program was conducted involving 35 members of the club. Results indicated a substantial increase in public awareness of cholesterol and its associated risks following participation. Before the program, only 25% of participants were aware of the need for regular cholesterol checks, which rose to 81% post-intervention. The comprehensive cholesterol check program at Pusaka Aji Kalibayem Healthy Heart Club effectively raised public awareness about cholesterol monitoring. Similar initiatives can be implemented in other communities to reduce cardiovascular disease risk through early detection and increased awareness.

Abstract

First aid education for minor accidents within the family plays a crucial role in enhancing safety and preparedness in everyday life. This community service activity aims to equip mothers, who have an important role in the family, with the knowledge and skills to handle minor injuries such as cuts or minor bleeding and burns. By providing appropriate and prompt responses, family members can prevent complications and reduce the severity of injuries. First aid education also enhances a sense of security and confidence, ensuring that individuals can effectively manage emergency situations until professional medical help arrives. The methods for this activity include lectures, demonstrations, discussions through Q&A sessions, and practical exercises. The results show that mothers understand the proper handling of minor bleeding and burns as first aid measures. These results are evidenced by practical exercises performed according to the handling procedures based on real case scenarios.

Abstract

Rats pose a significant threat to rice farmers, attacking crops at all stages of growth, including storage, with the most severe damage occurring during the reproductive phase. In Bendung Village, Bendung District, rats have caused substantial losses, including crop failures, particularly due to unpredictable weather conditions. The proposed solution involves creating eco-friendly rodent repellents powered by solar energy. The activities include socialization, device design, technology implementation, and evaluation. Evaluation results indicate that 40% of farmers understand the operation of the rodent repellents using frequency waves, and 60% understand their environmental impact. This program has provided farmers with new knowledge about methods to repel harmful rodents.

Abstract

Muhammadiyah branches and sub-branches, present in every sub-district and village, play a pivotal role in enhancing community welfare and ensuring equitable distribution of resources. To foster economic self-reliance, these units must establish business ventures capable of sustaining organizational operations and generating employment opportunities. Through this initiative, non-productive members of the Singosaren sub-branch have developed new skills in producing hygienic herbal medicine following Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). Moreover, participants have gained essential soft skills in digital marketing to promote their products online.
