Abstract

This study aims to discuss the existence of women as the other in the novel Lampuki by Arafat Nur, which raises the theme of conflict in Aceh. This novel shows more of the daily life of the conflict-stricken community so that the situation and position of women can be seen more deeply, namely in the community itself. Furthermore, the analysis will focus on three female characters who represent the general situation of Acehnese women during the conflict. The theory used in this study is existentialist feminism, developed by Simone de Beauvoir. This study uses the qualitative descriptive method. The results showed that society's deeply rooted patriarchal culture is the biggest challenge preventing women from achieving freedom and actualizing themselves. Halimah and Siti viewed their status as wives. In other words, they are part of their husbands. However, the condition of women who do not have a husband is not better, such as Rukiya, who still needs men or is not independent. This lack of independence is due to the social construct that makes women always dependent on men. In Beauvoir's view, men place themselves as subjects and women as objects whose existence is to be subdued. Furthermore, the fate of marginalized women, and dependence on men, including being victims in the conflict, is the result of the objectification that occurs to them.

Abstract

Verbal language is vital in communication and is the most important means of interaction. By the significant role of verbal language, visuals are often less considered unnecessary, even though they could help to understand communication better. Verbal and visual language are interconnected and simultaneously build a strong, complete, structured text. This research focused on how a book writer communicates using two or more modes simultaneously, namely text and images, which is called multimodal discourse analysis, particularly social semiotics. This study analyzes the illustrated book "I Hate Diet" by Yulia Baltschun. Using a descriptive qualitative method that refers to the theory of reading images, Kress & Leeuwen's (2006) analysis relates to the existence of representational and interactive meanings with images divided into three aspects: information value, salience, and framing. In connection with the data analysis in the form of text or verbal, it is analyzed using the theory of seven development tasks by Gee (2011). The results indicated the meanings of the image or visual illustrations supported by verbal or text analysis. There are several representations of meaning in it, namely the meaning of motivational invitations and warnings or meanings that remind.

Abstract

This study examines the peculiarities, similarities, and differences of negation patterns in French and Indonesian sentences. The data analyzed are declarative, interrogative, and negative imperative sentences taken from the Leipzig Corpora Collection.  The analysis results found that there are similarities in the formation of negation markers in French “ne … jamais” and Indonesian negation markers “tidak pernah”. The equivalence also appears in the arrangement of negative imperative sentence markers, which are formulated with negative ne+adverbs pas+verb and jangan+verb. Regarding the differences, the negation marker in French is present in two mandatory components, while in Indonesian, it is marked with one marker. There is even more variety of negations in French. In Indonesian, there is a standard rule between the combination of negation markers and the type of predicate in a sentence, but French tends to be more accessible. The formation of past and passive negative sentences is also different. Finally, in negative imperative sentences in French, the verb that is negated must be conjugated according to the subject, but in Indonesian, this is not the case.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the level of cognitive development and elaborate the factors that influence the level of cognitive development of the figure of Emanuel in the romance Die Geschichten von der Geschichte vom Pinguin by Christine Nöstlinger using Vygotsky's theory of the level of cognitive development. This research is a type of qualitative descriptive research that uses a literary psychology approach. Meanwhile, the instrument in this study is the researcher himself (human instruman). Data collection techniques are carried out by the literature study method and the validity of the data is carried out by validity tests and reliability tests. The results showed that there were two stages of cognitive development experienced by Emanuel's character in Kinderroman Die Geschichten von der Geschichte vom Pinguin, namely the actual developmental stage and the potential developmental stage. The actual stage of development is shown by the way Emanuel's character solves his problems independently, namely being able to deal with penguins independently and find solutions to each problem he faces. The potential stage of development is shown in the way Emanuel's character solves problems with the guidance of adults, namely the characters Emma and Malwine.  Meanwhile, the factors that influence the level of cognitive development of Emanuel's character found in the romance Die Geschichten von der Geschichte vom Pinguin are family atmosphere factors, family economic conditions factors and social environment factors.
