Abstract

This research was aimed to identify the obesity risk factors in adults aged 25-65 years old in 2011-2014. The study used secondary data from “Cohort study on risk factors of non-communicable diseases” that was collected for two years in 2011-2013 and 2012-2014. The research was designed as a prospective cohort study. The number of subjects was 1006, consisted of 364 men and 642 women. Results showed a 25% prevalence of obese (BMI≥25 kg/m2). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed the risk factors of obesity in adults aged 25-65 years old were gender, smoking habit, consumption of fatty foods, and duration of smoking habit. During the two years of observation, obesity developed faster in female subjects compared to male subjects, after adjusted to smoking habit, fat intake, and interaction between smoking habit and time. The risk of obesity in adults can be reduced by not starting smoking at early age and reducing consumption of fatty foods.

Abstract

This study aimed to assess the intervention effect of cookies and galohgor powder drinks on visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and lipid profile in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The study design was quasi experimental. Subjects of this study were 26 adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Bogor District, West Java. Subjects were divided into two intervention groups; cookies and galohgor powder drinks (GCPD) group and cookies and powder drinks without galohgor (CPD) group. Both interventions were given for 38 days period. Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was applied to assess the effect of interventions. The average changes in VAT controlled by covariates in GCPD group was significantly higher than in CPD group (-33.3% vs +6.7%; p<0.05), while the average changes in blood total cholesterol  in GCPD group and CPD group were -8.5% and -3.8% (p>0.05). The average changes of triglycerides level in GCPD and with CPD group were -30.9% and +1.6% (p>0.05). The average changes in HDL level for GCPD group and CPD group were -9.0% and -12.0% (p>0.05). The average changes in LDL level for GCPD group and CPD group were -3.9% and -1.6% (p>0.05). Hence, it can be concluded that the administration of cookies and galohgor powder drinks significantly reduced the Visceral Adipose Tissue (VAT) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlation characteristics of adult men aged 35-60 years with metabolic syndrome biomarkers. Cross-sectional study with a purposive sampling involving 36 adult men who have the criteria for metabolic syndrome according to International Diabetes Federation (IDF) 2006 was applied. The data was collected through interview and questionnaire administration. Body weight data measured using bathroom scale accuracy 0.1 kg, waist circumference with centimeter tape accuracy 0.1 cm, height with microtoice accuracy 0.1 cm. Serum lipid profiles were then analyzed by DSI kits Number 60111321 and 60111509, while the blood glucose was analyzed by DSI kit Number 60108392. The results were interpreted by using UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The results showed that most of subjects aged average 44.7±6.6 years, had BMI 30.3±4.2 kg/m2 and waist circumference 101.9±8.8 cm. Lipid profile of the subjects were serum triacylglycerol average 217.3 mg/dl, HDL-cholesterol 33.4 mg/dl, and fasting blood sugar  93.3 mg/dl. Body weight had a significant negative correlation with serum level of HDL (r=-0.34; p<0.05). A significant negative correlation also was found between age and triacylglycerol level (r=-0.44; p<0.01). Besides, a significantly positive correlation was found between age and serum level of HDL-cholesterol (r=0.33; p<0.05). There was no significant correlation on nutrient intake with metabolic syndrome biomarkers p≥0.05.  The research suggest the need to  regularly control weight and waist circumference to prevent metabolic syndrome.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze changes in body weight and cell morphology in liver, kidney and brain tissue of Sprague dawley rats administered  hypercholesterolemia diets for four weeks. Four diet treatments were applied in this study: control, catfish oil, catfish oil with the addition of omega 3 and catfish oil with the addition of omega 3 and vitamin E. Four weeks after the intervention, the rats were sacrificed and the internal organs (liver, brain, and kidney) were taken for histological preparations by hematoxylin-eosin (HE) and immunohistochemistry test. The study showed that the catfish oil intervention tend to reduced weight gain of rats fed hypercholesterolemia diets. More lipid accumulation in liver of the control group was found than the intervention groups. However, there was no difference in the histopathology of the kidney and brain tissues between the control group and intervention groups. It is concluded that catfish oil study provides a positive effect in rat liver tissue, but no difference exists between the brain and kidney tissue. There is no defect found at hippocampus of rats by formed of amyloid plague.
